Anyone Have Nike?

I just purchased Nike. Wonder if anyone can help with how to prune, etc. Nothing in the tags from the nursery. It's a gorgeous dark purple - prettier than Jackmanii. Also wonder how prolific and when it blooms....

Yes...it IS Warsaw Nike! I remember the sign at the nursery said 'Warsaw Nike' but on the little tag in the pot it only says 'Nike'. Thank you for the link! Do you have this clem? The link is informative but I didn't see anything about sun exposure and I'd like to plant it where it will get only a half day....actually, the bottom of the plant will be in shade but when it gets to be four feet, it will be in all sun. It's the South side but the fence blocks sun until the clems get to a certain height. I hope it will realize that the sun is there if it just keeps climbing? I love it....it looks like velvet.

I guess that's 3 votes for Niobe. Thank you for helping. Maggiepie, your Warsaw Nike is definitely purple. When I looked at Joy Creek's photos, Niobe and W. Nike look very similar. Their description says that Niobe is "dark velvety red" and W. Nike is "velvety red-purple" but there is no purple on their photo that I can see :) Anyway, my clematis in question is not purple for certain. Hello LORIA, Gosh...where to start....Barbara J and Nike are group 3 pruners which means you have to cut them way back in early Spring. Do you want to fumble amongst the roses to prune? As for fading...I would not recommend ANY of the multi colored clematis. The BEST for full sun are your white ones. I have a black mailbox with a Miss Bateman-white, on one side and H.F. Young-blue, on the other. Neither one fades. I have Earnest Markham -red, Ramona -blue, and a General Sikorski-blue in full sun. Henryii is a great one for the sun...he's white. Ken Donson is excellent also. He's a blue. All of these are group 2 pruners. To be honest, all Clematis do better in the shade, but there are some good sun loving ones as well. As for size, Ken Donson, and Henryii will give you 8" blooms. The others are smaller. As for your wooden post, will you be using some sort of chicken wire wrapped around your post to allow the plant to climb? I actually have some attached to a treillis with large gaps. You aren't setting yourself up for failure. Enjoy your clematis and have fun choosing OR TWO! (:0) I hope my advice helps. TwelthSunrise.

My EV is more purple too. Perhaps both are mislabeled. I have wanted to get a WN but they haven't been available locally. I did see one at Hummingbird Farm a few years ago, but Cindy had said it was mislabeled as something else. The next time I got back there, about a month later, it was already sold.

I have not started from cuttings this time of the year so maybe someone else can add his/her 2 cents. I would transplant them and keep them inside until they develop roots (about 3 weeks: pull/tug lightly and if you get resistance then they are rooting). Then keep them inside for a few more weeks & move them to the garage once they appear to go dormant on their own. Here is a useful link with information cuttings. I would not move into a garage a hydrangea cutting or a shrub that is not dormant since it will require more frequent waterings than dormant plants and I can almost guarantee that I will forget to water it... grumble grumble grumble.... High tech idea: I am now using the Outlook Calendar Feature to send me reminders of such garden related chores. Try that if you have a computer at home. Hi, Westy. I have WN and like it very much. Mine flourishes in about a half-day sun. Whether it's prettier than Jackmanii is a matter of taste, I guess. With its brighter bluish tints, the Jackman ranks higher in my book.

Garystpaul - is your Nike more prolific than Jackmanii? I almost bought Jack, but this one was darker and I was going for dark. I think Jack is the most prolific and longest-blooming of all clems, right? Or is there another I should be looking at for all-summer blooms? Btw, are you in St. Paul?

Warsaw Nike, at my house gets all day sun from 11 on. The bottom is as you describe, against a fence.

It is flowering beautifully now (zone 5b, southern Ontario), topped out on the 6' arbor. Could have been on a higher one but.....
I prune as a group 2, if I get around to pruning that is.

I think Etoile Voilette and Polish Spirit flower the longest here for me. Starting now and going well into August.Dana

Westy, both Warsaw Nike and Jackmanii are pretty floriferous in my garden throughout the summer. If it's that dark velvety look you're going for, then you'd probably be happier with the Nike.

Yes, I live in St. Paul, a hellishly challenging place for a transplanted Californian to garden. Thank heavens for peonies, hosta, hardy roses, lilies and, of course, clematis :-) Gary
