No Fruit on Calamondin Orange Tree

I have a Calamondin Orange tree now for 3 years. I bring it indoors for the winter but it spends spring and summer on my patio. It flowered and produced fruit the first year but the last two years it has flowered but no fruit has followed. It looks very healthy otherwise. Any ideas how I can get it to make fruit again?

Let it undergo a little bit of water or cold stress, like slight wilting of leaves by withholding water but not to the point where it dies. Then resumer fertilizing and watering.

Pampering it all the time without any stress discourages blooming.

Did it produce a lot of flowers the last 2 years with no fruit, or just a few?

I use Peters Professional mix for acid loving plants, or MirAcid. Both are widely available. I mix about a half teaspoon per half gallon and fertilize every two or three weeks during the winter, spring, and fall (less in the summer, since I am away!). I agrees with Hopeful that sunlight is important. Your Calamondin should set fruit reliably, without any need for pollinators, so the fact it hasn't suggests it is somehow unhappy. The most likely cause is poor watering. Watering before the tree gets stressed is crucial, since stress can cause fruit drop. My Calamondin, like some of my other citrus, shows early stress by slightly curling its leaves (from the edges in toward the center, so the leaves almost begin to look like they are trying to turn into cigars). When I see this, I know I have gone at least a day too long between waterings. Temperature should not be an issue: trees in citrus groves endure extreme variations in the spring months, and still set fruit reliably. Light intensity may also play a role. And possibly the lack of pollinating insects, but I think Calamondins set fruit relatively reliably indoors. Good luck! Don

Which varieties of citrus do best for own-root, grown from seed? I think there's something to be said for being natural. And I refuse to believe it is absolutely impossible to grow any type of decent citrus fruit without having to use grafting. Edit: Another discussion in this forum says that many citrus varieties can be grown own-root, but some maybe less sweet, and the roots require more frequent irrigation and are more vulnerable to disease. http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/citrus/msg012036217931.html And for some citrus varieties, the fruit resulting from the seedlings may be significantly different from the parent. It's all luck of the draw with the genes, and once the breeders found a winner they simply resorted to clonal propagation. For planting citrus seeds, one of the really helpful things is to carefully peel off the slimy covering over the seed, it helps the seed begin to grow much sooner, otherwise it takes time for this protective layer to rot away in the soil. You can use the same as any acid citrus, in salads, cooked food, marmalade, beverage like lemonade. It is very used in the Philippines and they use it a lot!, they make a dish called pancit which is very good and sprinkle the calamondin on top. All my acid citrus I start to use at the full size, they can be green and of course when they are fully ripened also. This way I get to use them for a longer season. Yes, it has produced a lot of flowers the last 2 years but no fruit follows.

Hmmm, thinking of things that would interfere with fruit set.... I don't think that temperatures are the answer, if you got flowers to form and I'll assume the temps are good and warm since it spends spring and summer outdoors. I don't think calamondins need lots of heat to set fruit, plus it has spring and summer to do so ( where are you anyway?).

How about adequate moisture? If the tree gets too dry it will bloom as joereal stated, but if you don't resume good care then it may not keep those flowers/fruit.

Maybe adequate nutrition? If there isn't enough energy for the tree to maintain the fruit you'll get more drop, but you state that the tree looks healthy--you must be giving it some sort of fertilizer.

Any other stressors?--like lots of wind when outside maybe? Or anything different from the first year to the last 2 years?
