Small-flowered Purple Clem ID

Hi, again. What I thought was the same clematis in two different locationsÂsee earlier query belowÂturns out to be two different varieties altogether. They're similar, to be sure, but one has four tepals, the other (usually) six; and there's different coloring in the stamens. The pic below shows them alongside each other. Any (further) ideas on what these might be? Thanks. GaryStPaul

The clematis with six tepals could be Jackmanii. Jackmanii can have 4-6 tepals, yellow anthers. Tepal shape is correct, fairly long and pointed, curling back to make the blooms appear rounded. The pictures on the HMF link don't show the backside, but Jackmanii should have a pale purple-to-white reverse.

The clematis with 4 tepals could also be Jackmanii, although the anthers are the wrong color. The anthers look like Elsa Spath, but ES is lighter in color, less pointed, and should have more tepals.

Maybe someone else can offer a positive ID.

I think the one on the left could be Polish Spirit and the one on the right, Etoile Violette.
Mine aren't flowering at the moment so I can't be sure.

Looks like Veronica spicata/spike veronica. I have one growing at the southeast corner of my house in full sun. It's very well-behaved--remains the same size clump each year but comes up and blooms reliably, seems impervious to either wet or drought conditions. Here is a link that might be useful:

LOL!! Call me a plant snob but dame's rocket, red valerian, rose campion, honesty (Lunaria annua) and forget-me-nots are more weeds than valuable garden perennials in my admittedly very personal opinion :-) They all seed so prolifically, at least here in the PNW, that once planted you will be roguing out seedlings forever unless you want your entire garden inundated with them. When I was a buyer for a local nursery, these were plants I never brought in or offered for sale. Kinda like selling dandelions in my book............

I agree with Maggie that the one on the left is most definitely "Polish Spirit"..I have two of him..and the right is Clematis "Etoile Violette"...Jeanne

Thanks, Maggie and Jeanne. I think you've nailed it. Gary, the Polish Spirit is listed as a "Jackmanii type" on COTWÂin fact, I think it was sold to me originally as a Jackmanii, but once it bloomed I realized that was a mistake. Best to all, GaryStPaul
