I bought some annuals before we went on vacation and then again about two weeks ago. Lowes had their Pansies marked down to 50 cents a 6-pack the beginning of July, so I snatched them up. They also had a "dying plant rack" that had a red Verbena on it in a large hanging planter. I snatched that up. I think I paid 2 bucks for it, and got a bonus dark purple Wave Petunia out of it because they had stuck that in there to make the planter look fuller. And then, I had to do my yearly "save a Gerbera Daisy" thing. I have yet to have one of them bloom for me, despite bringing them in over winter and nursing them. But I'm going to crack the secret yet! Then, while at Walmart, without my husband, you KNOW I had to go look at plants. I picked up two Cordylines for a buck and a half each, and then MORE Wave Petunias that were red (because I think I lost my WS container of red). They were marked down too, and I'm hoping for reseeders on the Petunias. Since I'm doing a lot of summer sowing, I hope it keeps me away from any more garden centers. Linda

I tried googling to find out what varieties of clems do this & to what extent. I couldn't find hardly any info & the 1 link I did find was about propagating. It says: "There are a number of plants which have this habit, some that I have successfully divided to produce a few extra plants are; heracleifolia, cirhossa Balearica, the viorna section, integreifolia, ladakhiana, marmoraria, marata and some of the New Zealand hybrids, such as Little Runner." I'm with you, I can't have that going on in my yard either. I emailed someone on the China Purple that I know has experience with it & holding off on mine until I hear back. I can tell you how I handled a Wisteria issue that was like that if it would help? I'm not sure if they grow the same, but I did have a bunch of roots coming off the mother plant & sending up new plants 15' away, so it is similiar. If the roots are that thick, you will need a pruning saw (I did, the wisteria had been in the ground for at least 10 yrs). I removed as much dirt around the initial rootball as possible to find all the roots that had grown a million miles from it & started sawing & pruning them off until I could get the initial rootball out of the ground. I then sprayed round up on the freshly cut wounds of the stems still in the ground & left the dirt off of them for a good week for the sun to bake on them. It worked. I know round up isn't suppose to work like that, only on foliage, coincidence? I wasn't going to take the chance on putting nothing on them, I was literally having bad dreams about this plant not ever going away. You might want to sub for something a little more potent, but you may not be able to plant anything in that spot for a year. If it simply the case that they were living off the mother plant then severing them might have done the trick. Good luck!

Heres my lineup: 7 pot Scotch Bonnet Yellow and Red Fatalli Bhut Jolika Austrian Lanterns Thai red and yellows Poblano I have grown 100s of varities over the last 15 years and these get me everything I need. I tried the scorpions last year, they look cool and are very hot but didn't make good sauce and the Bhut dry better and just as hot for my powder. Am trying the 7 pot/pod for the first time, we'll see if they make back to next years lineup. Bhut Jolikas best for powder. Fatalli makes such a so much better mash for pepper sauces I don't even fool with mashing anything else, except for a few scotch bonnets. Got have a few jars bonnet sauce. Austrlain lanterns made in back in this years lineup, what a great pepper to eat fresh, awsome smell and taste and HOT. Got have my thais. Love taking the to the local Thai place getting the cook in my food, plus i make this soy/honey/garlic sauce with them. Pablanos obiviously for my rellanos. Thats all I need to keep me happy:)

No-Clue, this is just my .02 but even beyond this situation, I think there is a fundamental problem with scouring neighborhoods searching for new, "undiscovered" commercial varieties that one intends to give a new name to and sell for profit. The problem is that without genetic testing, you have no idea whether it is already a named cultivar, a close relative, or simply some other seedling that though the chance of nature happened to end up looking like something else. Plumeria are so commonly used as landscaping in Hawaii, from living there I can say the vast majority of homeowners won't know the cultivar or lineage of the 20yr old tree in their yard. They just know what really matters (a good lesson for us all really)- whether it looks nice, smells nice, and/or makes a good lei. I suppose the role of the PSA is to help with this? However it still seems like an honor system type of thing at some point.
