Do you get your mulch from a landfill/recycling center?

Our county faces the possiblity of losing access to free mulch from our county transfer station/recycling and solid waste facility. The "fines" from grinding up yard waste was previously available to us free and they would load it at no charge. Do you get mulch from your county landfill or recycling facility? Are there certain hours that access is available? If so, how does it work? Does your facility load the mulch for you? If so, do you pay? How much? I am hoping to gather information and be able to suggest some alternatives to our Director of Recycling and Solid Waste that would be advantageous for the county and for gardeners.

I am in Raleigh in Wake County, and we are allowed to purchase compost, mulch, etc. from our city's yard waste center. The material is the composted or shredded remains of the city's curbside leaf and brush pick-up. The last time I went, a truckload of compost was $18 (2 1/2 cubic yards). It's very easy and convenient--they are open weekdays and Saturday. You drive-through at a window, pay your tab, go park where they tell you to, and someone comes with a front end loader fills up the bed. If you get a smaller amount, I believe you have to fill up your containers yourself. This link to the city's Web site provides other info. that may help you with your research. I get my mulch/compost from Wake County also. Sometimes I have to pick out bits of trash from it but that's no trouble because I am the one unloading it, wheelbarrow load by wheelbarrow load. Also right now, you can buy one load and then go back for a second free load but it has to be the same day. Shannon/Dirtrx

This is always an issue with me. I have an approx 7500sf garden and I don't use any machinery like tillers or mowers. It is 2/3 raised beds with no barrier around them. The other third is berries and fruit trees. I have a lot of paths to deal with. I treid landscape fabric w/ wod chips at first- the wood chips eventually broke down into something for weeds seeds to grow in and was impossible to deal with. Then I tried annual clover, which didn't germinate all that well and I had to walk thru the bees! Then I tried to scuffle hoe the bare paths for a couple of years- that was a nightmare!! For the past 5 yrs or so I have used newspaper or cardboard covered with oat straw. I don't use hay because I don't want the hay seeding all over my garden. The oat seeds die off or create mulch, the wheat and rye hay would be a nightmare. Oat straw is now very expensive. I use 10-12 bales a year @ 8.95/bale. Plus we have to have everything come over by ferry. Perhaps the wood chips or sawdust on paper/cardboard would be worth trying. Most chip here would be spruce. Wouldn't they be pitchy? I'd love to try a permanent material like brick, but we have european red ants and they LOVE nesting under rocks, boards and stone. A living mulch with no flowers that doesn't spread too fast or grow too high would be great, but has yet to be found! At least by me! Martha

Glad you've joined us, gayled, welcome to the NE forum! My DH and I are retired. We work together in the gardens... our spring techniques are pretty simple. 1. Clean up dead leaves and foliage and weed underneath plants... but not as early as we'd like this year. Probably not until April .... if we get more snow this week. 2. One of our earliest tasks every spring.... amend the soil. I think that's the best thing you can do for the gardens. We get free compost from our town.... dig it and take it. We've done this for the last eight years and it's really helped improve the gardens. While it's not exactly "organic" because the compost is made from garden waste that people bag and the city picks up, "free" makes it worthwhile. 3. We like to use bark mulch and I use cocoa mulch in a few special areas, but this has gotten expensive as our gardens have grown. We've found that the compost works like mulch by breaking down over the season. So we mulch every other year. 3. Fertilize? No, not even our roses. I think good soil is better than chemical applications. I learned about composting from my mother who was a wonderful gardener. Mom collected coffee grounds in one container (for her Mt. Laurels and rhododendrons) and egg shells & other wastes that she'd spread around her flower beds. Over 40 years of this gave her a yard with deep, dark soil and lots of worms. 4. My DH put in an irrigation system several years ago and he checks this early in the spring. We have a long yard with gardens down one side and around a garden shed. We don't use bark mulch. We use a mixture of 50/50 leaf mould & manure even in the shrub borders. I really like the natural look of it and it breaks down in the soil quicker as well as not tying up as much nitrogen since it's been composted for a season. In the fall, we beg leaves from all around our neighborhood, grind them, compost over the winter adding coffee grounds & manure once/week. By this time, we have a HUGE pile (probably about 7-8 yards) of great stuff ready to apply. If you do purchase mulch, please do NOT buy cypress. It's a protest thing. We are a certified wildlife refuge site and in my last quarterly magazine there was a headliner article speaking about how the Gulf's (especially LA) cypress trees are being cut down for mulch. The article explained how the process is destroying the cypress forests that help protect the land from large storms such as Katrina. Also, cutting the mature trees prevents younger trees from ever reaching maturity because its the mature trees that soak up the water & dry the land...seedlings need to be dry for several months out of the year in order to prosper & grow. It also said that a lot of what's being sold as cypress bark is really cypress chips and doesn't have the anti-rotting/anti-insect properties people think they're getting. We live in the country, too. There is a weekly trash pick up service in our area, but we don't use it. It takes us a month or two to fill a single 30 gallon trash bag. When one is full, I take it to the trash & recycling drop off and pay a by-the-bag fee that is probably one tenth the cost of the pickup service. I have made a concerted effort to stay off mailing lists, and we still get plenty of junk mail, which we shred. We have poor soil, so the shreds get sprinkled wherever we need the organic matter the most. I'd rather compost than burn. Yeah, I admit, sometimes it looks like confetti on our lawn, but the lawn is getting thicker! We compost vegetable scraps from the kitchen, autumn leaves, etc. As for cans and bottles, we recycle everything possible. Only non-recyclable plastic and meat bones find their way into our trash can, even with all the decluttering I'm doing with the help of FlyLady. Household items that are useful to someone else go to the Re-Use It Center, or I Freecycle them on the front porch. At first, I used a couple of cardboard boxes for the recyclable materials. But leaking liquids made them messy. So I replaced them with clear plastic bins that could be washed. I measured the shelf in the garage where we keep the recycle bins. I went to two or three stores that had a good selection of plastic storage containers. I used my measuring tape to be sure that whatever I got would fit into my space. I only need two boxes. One is for styrofoam, which shares space with a bundle of #2 & #4 plastic bags. (The bags are easy to pull out at the recycle place.) The other box holds cans, recyclable plastic & glass, which is how my local recycle place wants everything sorted. I also got a smaller box with a snap-tight lid. The mice chew aluminum foil and make a mess, but with the lid, I can keep foil out in the garage with the rest of the recycle stuff. When I have trash and/or recycling, I drive it over to the place which is also conveniently near some of the stores I need to visit anyway. I can combine my errands and save gas. Shannon -- Ralph was telling me about the compost you can get from Holly Springs, which is a bit cheaper, I think. I checked some of his out in person and it blows the city of Raleigh's away, in terms of quality. It really felt like soil. If you want to go out there and load some sometime, let me know. I could use some before winter, and we could help each other lift.

so carla, does the holly spring landfill not have a loader to help? and did you guys see the other post about rotted leaf mould in garner? can't recall who, but they're organizing a loader and we'll all split the cost on a per load basis. she'd figured on $20 a load or so. no timeline set yet that i know of. i have gotten the Raleigh stuff plenty of times, but it's only so-so in quality sometimes and i hate picking out all the trash (one time it was a whole can of bent nails! i still find those in my beds). so if holly springs is better that's awesome news. i figure rather than planting things til this drought breaks, i'm going to spend time on infrastructure and improving my soil.

Hey all,
This may be too far for it to be worth it for some, but Fayetteville agricultural landfill is ten dollars a truck load for the fine composted and they load it for you, the big shred for mulch is free, it does have some plastic shreds in it sometimes, but for free mulch, I'm not complaining.

I would have to consider the mileage and time factor. My DH can get to the Raleigh landfill and home in under 30 minutes. I'm in North Raleigh. If we plan it right I can get 2 loads for the price of one. And while it is annoying to find trash in it I am unloading it myself so I can pick it out. Some times the compost is better than other times. The last load was like black gold. And other times not so good. We also get wood chips which I use around the swing set. I'll have to see how far Holly Springs is from my house.
I saw the post about the Garner deal but it doesn't make gas sense for us. I would if we were closer.

Carla, I know that I am going to get several loads in the next month and you are welcome to some. We usually get it during the week in the morning and then I unload it during the day. Which means we could probably work something out for a weekend. Email me if you are interested in the Raleigh compost. I'd love to pick your brain about going organic. Shannon/Dirtrx

Pf, my apologies -we totally hijacked your thread. I get my mulch from the county landfill for about $18 a load. I pull up and they dump it into my trailer. I can also get wood chips and compost. I think the hours are 7-4 Monday through Saturday. I would think that Raleigh Parks and Rec utilizes this material in our local parks and greenways.

Why are you losing the mulch? Raleigh collects our yard waste every week and I am assuming that this is where they get the majority of material. Does your county collect yard waste? I hope that they reconsider their decision. While its not the cleanest I do feel that it is a good way to recycle the matereial and cut down costs. Shannon/Dirtrx

Chatham Co. at landfill site did same thing for $10/scoop loaded. They started in spring until they run out which was often only a few weeks. I haven't been for a couple of years because I now get semi composted cow manure/bedding by the tandem truck load from farm near Siler City (Clark Bros. Farm) ~$110 delivered (20 miles). That is far easier and probably better and cheaper.

Even if you have to pay a small amount instead of free, it's still a good deal. The Swain and Jackson centers don't even accept yard waste, much less offer to mulch it for you. Last week-end by hubby bought this mulching attachment for a leaf blower from the big box store over in Sylva and we used it to grind up the leaves that have fallen from the 40 bajillion trees on our property. Funny it only seems like 40 million trees until the leaves fall and you can't burn them.

The compost that I use is from a place listed in the phone book as Hwy 55 C & B Landfill in Holly Springs. To get there go south on US Hwy 1 to Hwy 55 exit, then east on Hwy 55 staying on the bypass to Old Smithfield Rd. which is about 3 miles from US 1. Turn right onto old Smithfield Rd and then immediately right onto the entrance road. You pull up to a small building and pay $12.50 for a pickup truck load/cubic yard of compost. You can get mulch also for $5, but it is coarsely ground up tree limbs which I do not care for. The compost is very well decomposed yard waste from the town of Apex, and it has been consisitantly free of trash. The price includes their loading it with a loader. One thing that I like is that they are very responsive when they are loading if you ask them not to only fill your truck to a certain level. My son-in-law will not allow me to take his truck to the City of Raleigh site on Poole Rd. He bought a load there and they overfilled the truck so that he drove home on the beltline with the bumper practically dragging the ground and stuff blowing out the back. The Hwy 55 landfill is open 6 days per week and takes credit cards; however, if you are going, I recommend that you call to make sure that they have someone available to load, especially on Saturdays.
