For those looking for a good source I HIGHLY recommend fourwindsgrowers and I recommend spending the extra money to get the 2-3 year tree. I now have 12 citrus trees and something in the order of 15-20 different tropical fruit trees purchased from a variety of nurseries and the fourwinds plants are far and above superior in quality and hardiness. Even though they werent mature enough to bear their first fruit, all my fourwinds trees did ( I of course pruned them as should be done for the first crop) and they are all now fruit bearers and growing well. I've also had 80% succes with Larry's Tropicals off of Amazon.com however they are one of those companies that send a tiny plant that must be nurtured a great deal to get a well established tree. This can be a lot of work. As far as bang for your buck goes, fourwindsgrowers is the best bet hands down. Another thing worth noting is fourwinds did a fantastic job packing the tree for protection during shipping which many others did not. I can't say enough about how good their products and service is. If you are serious about your citrus they are the vendor for you.

Yes, it does look like a bunch of small scales from the picture. It actually resembles scarring, except for the orange coloring. I've had a few experiences (unfortunately) with scale and have a tree that has a mild infestation that's isolated right now so I'm quite confident its not scale. Any ideas? The picture actually didn't look fuzzy until I posted it.. wierd. Okay, I'll take a new pictures when I get home. Thanks!

One of my trees has Kaffir for root stock. The top started dying (when I was out of town) and root stock grew..I thought I left one of my kaffirs out in the gh, (I grow them indoors,not gh) but when the root stock came up it was a kaffir. I never heard of using it either, but who am I to say anything since I don't even know how to graft. LOL. Toni

Calcerous definition from the Encyclopedia of Soil Science: Calcareous soils as defined here are the soils that fall between the near neutral soils and the alkaline soils in redox‐pH space. They straddle the calcite fence of the pedogenic grid. The fence itself marks the pH zone below which calcite dissolves and above which it precipitates. The above is mostly chinese to me btw. I understand calcareous soils are ones which primarily consist of limestone. There is a lot of calcium carbonate in them and there may be magnesium carbonate also. Their pH is normally close to 8. There is a lot of them around the Med basin as most soil in the area used to be sea bed. Now, actual soil chemistry and mechanical structure may differ from soil to soil but they are always 'alkaline' in reaction, with huge buffering capacity so you can't acidify them by using elemental sulfur. In my garden soil pH varies from 7.8 to 8.3. I'm sure there ARE calcareous soils that are too extreme for growing citrus but one should not generalise. Calcareous soils are generally N, P, Zn and organic matter deficient (especially where they occur, as they commonly do, in dry and warm climates). Apart from stock selection one needs good fertilisation practices to grow citrus in calcareous soils so it will often be more expensive to grow them than in neutral or slightly acidic ones. Good point about them is that they are often very free draining so soil humidity induced root and crown diseases are less of a problem. Growing citrus in my soil conditions is actually much less of a problem than growing many other plants affected by the high pH and resulting nutrient deficiencies. Main problem is their watering needs and the wind... I also grow many roses in my garden and chlorosis is much more of a problem for them than on citrus on proper rootstock.
