That would be a great auction for a group of people who are just starting their collections to pool together and bid then distribute the cuttings amongst themselves.

I discovered swiss chard when I lived in San Diego, an asian neighbor dug up some of her plants and gave me 2 big plants. I LOVED them. They had big huge leafs, I would steam and then briefly saute in fresh garlic and butter..YUMMMY...Now for some reason, the chard I have planted here in GA is not as good to me, the flavor is very different. I got a bunch of seeds in a seed exchange, so maybe the varieties were just not the same. I'm going to try to plant more of the big green ones, the shorter more colorful (more red stemmed ones) just dont have the same buttery taste to me. I also got seeds from a neighbor last year of what i was told was a climbing okra...turns out that it is something else which I cannot recall the name, I know that they are used when left to dry out to make luffa's?, and since they were planted so late last year, I did not get a chance to try them out..but they were really big long pods. I'll try them again this year and see what happens. I LOVE Okra, planted Emerald for the first time this year, last year and the few years before, I planted Clemson Spineless, hope I am not dissapointed with Emerald, as I have NO Clemson's planted at all this year. My first year here, I planted 6 yes SIX okra plants, I'll never forget, I was admiring the very lush garden of a neighbor of my MIL's , he's an older gentleman and I was so proud that I too had planted OKRA, he asked me how many plants I had, and I told him SIX...and he chuckled outloud and says "well you might be able to get a mess from them" I learned quickly, there was NO MESS of any kind with just six plants...the next year I planted 20 and even then never had enough to put any up...and it took a week to get a "mess" to cook up. this year I have planted 3 rows (15 feet each), I'm hoping this is enough :) I also have for the first time successfully grown garlic, I bought a mixed bag (she sent me a few of each of several different varieties) from a lady who sells on the farmers bulletin from Atlanta, I think I planted like 6 or 7 different types. they are all over my garden..cant wait another surprise that I just love are the multiplying onions. got free bulbs from someone on freecycle, and now I have more of them than I know what to do with.. last year I also for the first time successfully grew PEANUTS!! that was WAY COOL...harvested and put up a dozen gallon bag full of them. of course here in the south we boil them in salty water, yummy!! I have volunteers all over my garden!! I have enjoyed mustard greens and love having parsley in my garden...I found some growing in the cracks in my lower patio, I had let some in the flower beds go to seed, and I dont have the heart to pull them up!! And finally sweet potatoes! no hassle great reward!!

Central cali - your question is a biggy and ambigious. We can presume you mean how to tend to them all winter. Or assume you mean, you want to get rid of them or you want some planting ideas. You know lots of people here could read what they want out that question...lol. The offers to take they off your hands are a comin' I'm canadian so I can't even joke that way...lol There's a b.o.b. link around. Bucket Of Brugs. For keeping your stalks in water all winter. Or pot them up when lots their roots get 4" or so, those are huge branches or I could of said much shorter. Get your hands on some good sized pots you plan to leave them in all year. There's a link on sticking them in the ground with holes in the side of the container and just dig it up come spring. the guys do it and some of the ladies. Using kitty litre/plastic laundry soap or big buckets of some sort or another. I find that would be harder for me and I like to keep as much root system as possible, but maybe it'd work for you. A cheap alternative for temporary use. Use big 15ltr round spring water containers and cut the top off the bottle. You'll have to cut the bottles off come spring though, they tend to have ridges that prevent them from coming out. You can't leave them in these types of containers, they're not for carbonated beverages - a tougher plastic. But I have put other plants in them through the summer. A good sticky paper is always a cover when you want it but it'll stand out more. -Sandy

minotpeonies, I am wondering if bagging P. tenuifolia may be the wrong way to germinate them. P. tenuifolia are not hypogeal like most of the other peonies are, they are epigeal. In other words the cotyledons of the germinating Paeonia tenuifolia seed expand, throw off the seed shell and become photosynthetic above the ground. Seed of other species stay inside the seed shell and remain non-photosynthetic and below ground. This being said I really don't know if the species has the multistage germination that others have but it stands to reason that it would not be multistage and would not need the refrigeration after the initial root growth. That is the reason I am trying them in pots of soil for my first time. I think they may just begin to sprout and come on up. I think it helps more as an anti-fungal than anything ...... I know of several veteran Brug growers/hybridizers who have great success and don't use it ....... But you have to figure out what works best for you and the growing conditions you have ...... Are your cuttings brownish-green with a rough surface, or green and smooth? What are you rooting them in -- water, perlite, coir, seed starting mix?

I think that anyone on the board who's looking for a number of cuttings should get together and contribute to a group bid. It will probably go for a high price but if a bunch of people pool their money you could easily be the high bidders and there's certainly enough brugs to be divided amongst a good number of people. I see that there's still a some people looking for cuttings and he has some nice varieties posted. Too bad I'm not looking for many of those varieties and don't have any room or I'd join in. lol

WOW!!!!!!That is a bunch of Brugs...The bidding is starting at $5.. The postage sounds like it could be alot..but I bet they would all fit in a flat rate box and that is under $10.. This is a great oppurtunity for someone out there...

No international shipping ....Pah ....I would of had the lot.LOL

i paid $38 for a 6lb box from the states to the UK. But like you say it would be cheaper for you guys.

I've shipped 15 lb boxes priority and the charge was only about $12.

I shipped a 26 lb. box of cuttings Prioirty the other day. The charge was just over $20. It all depends on what zip to what zip. I think the guy would have a real hard time trying to cram 65 cuttings into a flat rate box...

WF.. Do you go to the USPS Online Store to get boxes?? I have mine delivered to my house..For Free...I love FREE!!!..LOL and they have tape!!!!

Yeah I sure do Chena...I also print postage from here and have them pick everything up from my doorstep. My mail lady hates me with a passion and I am not kidding about that...

I tried to find the Prioirty tape on the website not too long ago and wasn't able to find it. Figured they'd discontinued it or something. You got a link for that?

I just went and looked and I didn't see it either.. Maybe they did discontinue it.. I'll ask for some when I go to the PO and see what they say....I use the stickes when I send out the tri-angle boxes...Those were still there...

You U.S guys are lucky to have such an efficent and cost effective postal system. It cost me $10 to send 6 glad corms in a bubble mailer from B.C to Ontario.

I am so jelous about this auction I am just starting my Brug addiction and have exactly two unknown cuttings from the same plant rooting.

Chena, please let us know what they say about the tape. I think I still have a roll or 2 left of it, but like to stay stocked up on everything. I'm betting too many people were using it for other things besides shipping so they quit giving it out!!!

I'm able to order boxes and various labels but no tape. They don't have it on the web site or the PO.

They do not give out the tape anymore, but if you know anyone at your local PO, they will "sneak" you a roll in a box and ask "Is this the right size box? I do this when I need a roll
