Need advice on Landscaping in front of the house
Comments (5)The general rule will be that the evergreens (conifers) will not grow back from bare wood, while the deciduous ones probably will. So will any broadleaf evergreens. The other way of categorizing them is (a) which ones you like and which you don't, or (b) which are good in the place they are and which are not. You might not need to know what they are to answer those questions. A plant you hate that's in your way = get rid of it. That may encompass, as Ink suggests, pretty much all of it. There is both a pro and a con to keeping such big shrubs. Yes, they may not need to be watered, but that is because they have large root systems that are able to suck all the available water from their surroundings, handicapping the growth of anything new you might plant. Also, those large root systems are capable of pushing out a lot of new growth every season, which = lots of pruning. And again Ink is right: you need to know how to prune to do that with good results. I'm for yanking them - whatever they are, they are not treasures, and the landscaping has basically reached the end of its planned lifespan. The trees in back, however, are doing a pretty good job of screening for you, and may do for some time yet. KarinL...See MoreDesperately need advice selecting a front entry door
Comments (4)Sorry, I just don't see the craftsman style working here, windows OR door. I'm not coming up with a door that would permit you to look outside. I see a solid door or one with two rectangular lights at the top -- you'd have some light, but couldn't see out (and no one could see in). Think twice about hanging shutters too narrow to (visually) completely cover a window. If you are going to paint the door, don't spend a lot on wood good enough to stain....See MoreNeed advice for front landscaping
Comments (7)Yardvaark, your feedback made my day! Since purchasing the home two months ago, I have wanted to remove and seed that front flower bed that looked like an unnecessary mulch cul-de-sac. And just today I had scheduled a landscape and hardscape contractor to come and give an estimate to have the skinny cement walkway removed and instead have two much wider flagstone paths leading from both the street and side garage area. Your awesome advice confirmed just the look I was envisioning! I'm so glad that I didn't plant any of those plants, and I'm excited to find a new location for that Japanese Maple. Thanks again! Your time and advice was so very appreciated!...See MoreOld house: need front yard landscaping advice
Comments (45)Lord knows I love Hicks yew, but it grows 3-4 ft. spread and 8-12 feet high. I would not put one of those next to my house. You can prune them into a hedge, but pruning is not everyone's forte. Looks like Novice has some kind of yews already up against the house. That's why it is very difficult to advise someone on plant choices, because everyone is different in terms of taste, desire to do maintenance, family, pets, time, etc. Your landscaping really isn't that bad. It just needs to be maintained and pruned for the most part. I'd focus on the area around the front steps, and just edit the edge islands, there seems to be weedy plants in those areas and the mature trees and shrubs could be pruned a bit to make them look more aesthetic....See MoreRelated Professionals
