UCR June Budwood release

I know that some of you guys have procured budwood from UCR before. I am on the list now and will hopefully be getting the email from them sometime in May. Has anyone;

A: ever got them to include stuff from their collection not on the Budwood Foundation List or the Early release list?

B: got them to add other varieties to the budwood release list?

citrusboy: no to A, not even if you work at UCR. You can go to meetings at Lindcove, they send invitation to that too, and then suggest on what you want added to the early release dates from their collections. They will deliberate on those new varieties and get the consensus before adding them.

If you can travel to Watsonville sometime next year's citrus tour at Gene Lester's farm, you can ask budwoods from him and he freely gives. There are 200 cultivars to choose from his collection, I think he has several that even the UCR germplasm doesn't have at the moment. Email me sometime this December and will let you know the exact dates. Meanwhile, if you can't wait that long, Gene Lester has another citrus tour this coming fall as part of the various tours during Festival of the fruit at San Luis Obispo, and that is somewhere between Sept 5-9. I don't have exact details, just my memory from discusssions with CRFG.

It is worth the trip to visit Gene Lester's Citrus collections.

I just went to UCR Citrus collection website and found a notice stating no budwood releases or sale.

This is really disapointing - I can understand their stewardship and research role in maintaining that collection. However, there has to be a way to get it to nuts like us who just have to have the latest citrus!

Improving existing varieties is great, but how do they know what will the popular fruit or variety of tomorrow without the public trying it.

Hi Diane! Good to see you. I hope all is going well up in the "north land". Thank you! I obtained Blue Bayou from a friend this past summer and it has taken, but I definitely appreciate your offer. Bud wood is easy. It can be from a flowering stem from which a flower has recently shattered, but from which no new foliage or shoots are forming yet, just as you would seek for soft wood cuttings. It can also be from the growth beneath that flowering shoot, also with no new foliage or shoots forming. You want the buds to be dormant to just prior to actively starting growth, but not to the point of new foliage appearing yet, or they will be too water hungry to survive the reduced sap flow a newly inserted bud will receive from an actively growing stock. So, bud wood is often very much the same material as either hard or soft wood cuttings. It all depends upon when the budding is intended to be done. If you are budding now, the more actively growing stuff (prior to new foliage formation) is better as it will knit and break into growth seemingly immediately. If you wish to collect the wood now, store it over winter and bud the following summer, then you go for material which you would normally call hard wood cuttings. I ordered liners from Citrus Tree Source last year - they were very willing to work with me on a small order and some credit card and shipping wackiness (on my end). Haven't ordered rootstock from them, but they're good folks and I can't imagine they won't get back to you.

What's the deal with non-citrus people anyway? ;) ah, the fabled flying dragon... I have seen FD for sale here in N. Cal as just a plant unto itself, though admittedly only at one particular and strange garden center. Big sucker too--like 3 feet in height, multistemmed. I thought about getting one and then rooting cuttings of it...or maybe growing some fruit and collecting seeds so I'd have graftworthy plants when I'm like 100 years old...Have you asked about special ordering one at a nursery? Choice A is probably what a lot of people do. I'm just gonna add to existing trees , and then if I later get my hands onto some real rootstock I will just take a bud and re-graft. This won't help this year, but I've seen some website that sells FD seeds but you need to order like a whole liter or something ridiculous...I really want like, 30! (Maybe someone wants to trade?? )It makes laugh when I hear of people in other states who just find the fruit laying on the ground and use that...how unfair :)...You can use other rootstock as well. I've got sour oranges growing--a few types--and that is supposed to be good rootstock as well. Last point--I can't speak for other growers and I should just ask them, but I know that at least for some of its trees Four Winds Growers does NOT use FD for all of it's "true dwarf" citrus. I have no idea what what it is--some type of orange? it's got an orange look to it, anybody know?--but many of my trees are from them and the suckers are NOT trifoliate-looking. The only tree I have seen producing a trifoliate-type sucker and grown by Four Winds was a Key lime... Moral of the really long-winded story is you can still get a real nice tree on another rootstock. HTH.

My two different pink varieties looking good on the third yrs I planted. Look like I will have a lot of fruits this yri guess some beetles or bugs helped cross pollination...over 100 pink dragon fruits from 4 poles. My family and friends will be very happy :) latest update on shiranui I pruned back small branches

Thanks JoeReal! I think I will try to catch the GL tour this September. I am a member (or on the mail list) of the CRFG so I will do some research to find out when it is. You're a wealth of information.

Thornyissue, UCR canceled the Jan. 06 budwood release. June is still on. They are having an open house this Saturday and I am going down even though at $3.05 a gallon it's $20 trip... Should be able to get some 1st hand info about the upcoming release. This is the link:
