I don't know the difference between frogs and toads. It seems to me that we have an abundance of toads around here and something that I think is a tree frog (litte tiny green thing).
I had the WORST experience the other night; I was tossing some hot(liquified) wax out into a bed of pinestraw. Then I noticed that the wax started moving about and was MORTIFIED to see that I had tossed it right on top of a toad! I do hope he/she made it - what a terrible thing to have done to you.

I am putting in a very small, 35 gal, water feature this fall. Your toad pics just reminded me that I want to have it near ground level for all of my toad buddies - if they haven't all run off in terror of the 'hot-wax' lady.

I haven't seen my two little ones for nearly a week and am thinking the worst. I see the two big bullies (Jed/Pearl & Jethro) all the time and the medium one (Sampson) only occasionally. Maybe the babies are still there and I'm just not seeing them. My pond is overly full of lillies and hyacinth. I hadn't thinned them out first because of the heat and now because of the never ending rain. They could hide pretty easily.

Wow! Nice pictures.. I'm jealous of your camera! hehehe. I have a white frog that comes around. I don't think he's albino though because his eyes aren't pink but it surprises me how white he is. I tried taking pictures of him but my digital camera did not respond so well to the dark night.

You have to use the flash, DragonStone... and if it has different "ISO equivalency settings," you should set it to the highest number, or a higher number, at least (mine has ISO 50, 100, 200 and 400), which really ISN'T that much of a range for someone whose last film camera would use film ranging from ISO 5-6400, but it's better than nothing, lol.

I cropped in on the pictures to just show the frogs. The originals showed lots more stuff around the frogs (water and plants or concrete), which I just cropped out so I could show the frogs bigger.

My flash does kick on but I'm afraid it's just not as advanced as other digital cameras. It's a hp photosmart 435. My very first digital camera was this awful one from Kodak. Kodak EZ200.

Well, Dragonstone, although the zoom on this camera sounds pretty poor, it does appear to have a "night" shot mode for the flash and ISO equivalencies of 100, 200 and 400, so perhaps you need to change the settings a bit at night to get better pictures...

Or maybe you're doing all you can with it. I have no way of knowing... But sometimes we have options on our technologies of which we're unaware, as many of these digital devices come with bells and whistles that may be a bit difficult to discover or access.

At any rate, I found a specifications page for the camera and posted a link below, just in case you needed more information on its capabilities. My first digital camera was a 3 Megapixel Olympus and I could get pretty decent night shots.

Maybe changing the ISO to 400 and setting the flash to "night" will help.

I would bet that "white" frog is really a gray tree frog. I found a white one last week and when I took pics of it, the camera picked up colors (very subtle) that my eye didn't see. It also turned very gray when it got wet as I was watering.

We set up a kiddie pool for the dogs awhile back, about 13 juvenile bullfrogs have taken up residence in it for the summer. As mosquito control, they are way overrated.

I think expecting frogs to control mosquitos is kind of like expecting cats to control roaches... they might catch on one occassion, but in general the bugs are too small and numerous for the frogs to either pay them much attention or make much of an impact.

From what I've read, the BIGGEST thing for adult mosquito control is dragonflies (which, unfortunately, the frogs are far more likely to eat, lol, but then the habitat that is inviting to the frogs is also inviting to the dragonflies, so I guess that's a tradeoff). Some say bats also catch mosquitos. I don't know... skeeters seem like a might tiny meal to me for anything much bigger than another bug or a small fish, which WILL eat one that lights on the water, and will, of course, eat all the larvae they can, assuming you have enough small fish to keep up with the larvae.

At any rate, amphibians are VERY threatened in our modern environment, so I'd certainly encourage as many as I could... They're all gonna eat SOMETHING you don't want, even if some occassionally DO also eat things you also DO want. Let's just hope the dreaded CANE TOADS (Bufo marinus) don't make their way this far north...

Mostly known as a pest species in Australia, they're also quite prevalent in South Florida, where they eat ALL the other frogs, and anything else they can (they get even bigger than bullfrogs). Like most toads, cane toads excrete poison from glands behind their eyes. But in the case of cane toads, it's quite toxic and has killed a good number of dogs and cats unfortunate enough to tangle with one of them.

From what I understand, they're still limited to South Florida in the east coast, so I don't think they're any concern here, yet. If you ever see a really BIG, ugly toad, though (as big or bigger than a bullfrog) be wary. I don't know if they can survive in our colder climate, but that doesn't mean somebody won't bring one some with them some summer and let them loose, so it's always possible even if they're not winter hardy that we could encounter one in the warm weather, thanks for someone who thought they were "neat," or who had nefarious intentions akin to bioterrorism (I know that's a bit of a stretch, but then people can do some REALLY STRANGE THINGS).

Our own bullfrogs, which are quite native east of the Mississippi, are NOT native out west, yet were imported out there at some point during this century by various people for whatever reason(s) (nobody seems to know the full story behind this). At any rate, they've gotten loose in the ecosystem in some west-coast areas and are decimating the local amphibians just about as badly as the cane toads do in South Florida. Things just DON'T BELONG out of place, in the wild.

We're still waiting to see what this little(???) tadpole has turned into. Seems our frogs down at the pond are a little more shy than most of y'all's. Nose to tail, it was about 5 1/2" long. Hard to get the camera to focus down into the water...
