Late summer, early fall crops

Good Afternoon everyone!

I'm working outside today pulling up tomato plants I've had in the ground since April.....and I was wondering if anyone else is now working on their late summer, or early fall planting?

My tomatoes did wonderfully well in the unusually barrage of heat and no rain they experienced early on.

I'm ammending my soil after I get the plants out with topsoil and compost....then I beleive i'm going to plant Dino Kale and Tree collards in their place.

I'm also putting in pumpkins so we will have them ready for Halloween.

I have already pulled out the main bunch of my summer squash, but I still have a few plants to go....then I'm going to try some quick growing tomatoes like Agatha and Silver fir tree in their place.

Wary of starting on too much with the heat and lack of rain, but I have started some kohlrabi (60 days) and climbing spinach and dill. I just need to refresh some of the dill seed. I also have some small tomato seedlings and peppers I'm going to set out. Need to go through my seeds and see what else I'm going to do. Tomatoes are just starting to yield and my cukes are looking good, but nothing off of them yet. Wanted beans but it's just to dry for them, may try some late okra if I can get it going. Hoping that this next week we'll get some good rain!

I can never get winter squash to survive the late summer onslaught of fungus and bugs--so I've already got my pumpkins this year! Any tips for how you manage to get such crops as you name to survive the deep, dry, hot and humid weather?

From my own experience, I've found that planting another round of beans will give you a nice late summer/early fall crop. Carrots are also an easy one to keep sowing all season. Depending on how long your growing season is, you may want to try starting some cool season veggies so that they mature before the first frost. Broccoli, cauliflower, swiss chard and possibly even peas and spinach are good fall garden candidates. On the other hand, I've had a very hard time with growing veggies in preparation for the fall, at least in my area. If the seeds actually germinate in the heat of summer, it's not long before pests find the little sprout and decimate them before they can get established. If you can start your plants indoors and grow them big enough to withstand heat and bug attacks, you should be able to have a nice fall garden. Starting plants outdoors will require constant supervision. Protection from pests and maintaining adequate moisture are major issues that have to be addressed.

I can grow them here sometimes. Many times it is just too hot and dry for good germination. When there are tropical storms moving in August powdery mildew becomes a much greater problem than it is with spring plantings. The good news is that the pickle worms which arrive here about the 4th of July have retired back to Florida in September.

Thanks, actually Sarracenia are a temperate species of cps, which means they have to experience a dormancy period to preform there best. Last year i left all of them outside in the pool, moved them to the center, cut there pitchers off used a fungiacid and filled the pool with pine mulch, with it covering 6+ over the pots too, and all these successfully overwintered in zone 5. Sorry to say my favorite plant S. fledgling did not survive, and some of the smaller vfts did not either, the only things you have to bring inside during the winter are...nepenthes, tropical sudews, mexican butterworts, heliamphora, cephalotus can be treated as a tropical, and few others.

I have all the plants you mentioned, except the bw, and none have blooms yet. Everything has been on schedule for me so far, even with the amazing amount of rain. Maybe you have some kind of micro-climate going on, putting you into a zone 6. I'm about 20 miles west of Chicago, so not too far from you.

Sorry, I'm probably in a bad mood now-- it's been in the high 90's for so long and we've had so little rain, why oh why would I even think of planting anything now? All I want to do is pull up my poor suffering tomatoes and wait for spring!!
