changing mhy white window to black and adding black shutters, red brick house, ? how much is too much black

i'm wondering where to draw the line, should the topper on the window be white or black the trim under the eve is 12 inches of white, the front door(and porch with pillars). Ggarage doors are white with a white topper trim, the box under the window is white(3feet by 3 feet) How to apply the accents. Most colonical red brick houses haave white window, black shutters and a vaiety of white and black trim. Is there a guide line? thanks Judy

I would use the black strictly as an accent. Too much can get overbearing. Not sure I would paint the windows black?

I'd go with the roof color instead of black - just a bit softer. But since you already have black, and it's smart looking, stop there - no more. What color is your front door? What color is the siding around the bkfst rm/sun rm? Maybe it's just the lighting, but it looks like a much softer color than the white on the dormers and columns. Since you already have black shutters, here's what I'd do - I'd let the white window trim be my accent color - use it only around the windows themselves. Paint the siding, including the dormers, and perhaps the columns, too (leave that decision for last, then decide if they should stay white) the color the sun room APPEARS in this picture to be - a pale gold? it appears to pick up a tone in your brick. If you can't find a color in the brick to pick up, use the mortar color. Either way, I think you'll find your house more attractive with a little less contrast. I'm from an area with a lot of this type of architecture, and it's been 30yr since anybody used stark black & white with red brick. Sage green is another color that's beautiful with black and red brick.

neighbors recently painted their red brick house trim a deep olive green and it looks like a million bucks. the front door and all window sashes are bronze green (all SW paint) and its really hot. whatever color you choose (yes, even black and white) make sure it works with the shade of brick you have. brick is NEVER red. get a paint sample book and match the brick to a paint color, that way youll find it easier to make choices. And finally, look at every option outside in full sun - its amazing how much the sun bleaches out color. you may need to go darker for outdoor paint.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I think those grey/green shutters could be an option for us. I like the look of darker gutters (not black, more iron ore or copper), but starting to think that the uneven gutter coverage on the front of the house will just look odd unless we also do dark trim on the peaks of the house. Since we want to avoid painting the trim it might just be easier to go with white and add color/character via shutters

Wow, it really looks great! I know you just got rid of yellow on your house but have you considered a yellow door? It could be a homage to the old color and be a really great modern pop. Here's a mock-up of black window trim. I'm not a fan of the extreme contrast here. Not sure I like it as much as say, black windows. Your windows look like they are in good condition and don't need replacing, so that doesn't seem like a viable option.

Wow, thank you all so much for the ideas!!! I've been looking at different houses and colors online and in stores all day and I seem to keep coming back to this inspo picture posted this morning by JudyG Designs. It has the same window grilles on the tops of the windows that our property has and a low profile, black shingle roof. I love the bright white color (Chantilly Lace maybe?) and the Yellow Hibiscus door! My husband is currently at the house wrapping the columns with 5 1/2" boards. If I try to go this route I would just paint the whole house Chantilly Lace, the door Yellow Hibiscus, and skip adding black trim. Might stick with painting the walkway and front porch SW Online (grey). Do you guys think it could work?! Thank you so much again for the outpouring of help!! I am both color and decision challenged which makes choosing paint colors (even for a rental) an anxiety-ridden task:( You're ideas and inspiration pictures have helped so much!!

I am wondering what paint scheme you came up with for your house after all? your house sounds a lot like mine and I am looking to update as well. I have red brick on front of house with white trim and white garage doors. I have painted front door dark grey but also am wondering if I should paint garage door dark grey as well? I have boxes of siding under windows as well...do I leave them white? Back of house siding is all white and I have shutters that are dark grey. Roof is grey as well. What color of white do I paint exterior if I were to stick with white?
