Is it too late for 'Early Spring' prunning??

I've grown Hagley Hybrid for a few years now and just learned it should be prunned hard to 12" late winter for early spring! I saw it had new leaf buds everywhere and thought it was okay to let go. I'm assuming it is still alright to go out and whack it back? will it bloom better?

Pam..since Hagley blooms on new wood...you can go ahead and prune to one inch above the first leaf axil...I did mine in Feb...and you are a colder zone than me..My Hagley is only about one foot tall now and just saw another vine pop outta the ground...Mine started later than normal for me?...Go figure....Jeanne

Hi. I am new to growing clematis and bought and planted my first ones prior to doing any real research. *hanging head in shame* I bought a jackmanii and did not prune it this year. It has about 2 feet of dead looking wood and then about 3 feet of new vine growing from that. Should I still prune this back now or just wait until next year. If I prune it now, will it come back and bloom this year?

First, daylilies are not bulbs - they are fleshy-rooted perennials that are incredibly tough and hardy and can be planted anytime of year the soil is workable. Not all iris are bulbs either and many varieties can be planted similar to the daylilies. Most true bulbs that bloom in spring need a period of vernalization to set roots and develop flower buds, that's why they are planted in fall. If insufficient vernalization is provided, they won't bloom, or at least not that first season in the ground. The pre-chilling of spring flowering bulbs in warmer climates achieves the same purpose. IME, January is pretty much the limit on when one can plant spring flowering bulbs and expect them to bloom that spring. And that may be difficult to accomplish in zone 5.....I'd imagine your soils to be pretty well frozen at this time of year :-) The other aspect is that spring flowering bulbs available for sale this late in the planting season tend to be leftovers and of lesser quality....the good stuff's already been sold! One needs to maintain dormant bulbs under proper storage conditions for them to remain viable and they simply don't last forever out of the ground. If you don't have any bulbs on hand to plant now, I wouldn't recommend searching any out. The combination of unsuitable planting conditions (frozen soil or snowcover), the lack of quality bulb sources and the lateness of the season will just serve to produce unsatisfactory, frustrating results. Wait until later when the soil is workable and the weather cooperative to plant perennials like iris and daylilies. And look for already started bulbs (in containers in leaf and often in bud) available at garden centers or other plant outlets when they come in season - February and March in my climate, perhaps a bit later in yours. Or wait until fall to plant the dormant bulbs for the following spring. And pretty much any spring flowering bulb will work in your climate. You just need to do some research on what are bulbs (corms, tubers, etc.) and what are really rooted or rhizomatous perennials.

vinegar . . . too early or too late?

My St. Augustine is allready greening up. You indicate zone 7 Ft. Worth. We are actually in zone 8A unless you are north of Ft. Worth. Now, 20% vinegar works a lot like Roundup in that it kills grass and weeds so if your grass is starting to green up I would use a spray bottle and spot treat weeds. Other, the stuff is pretty caustic so use gloves. IMO, the best control of weeds is a healthy turf and the hot Texas sun.

Michelle, I agree that 2011 was truly horrible. We were out fighting wildfires day and night and were living on Gatorade, bottled water and whatever food I could grab in a hurry and take to fires. Forget watering the garden....I was watering firefighters. It was the worst summer ever with more firefighters sick from the heat than you can even imagine, including me. It ruined me for gardening because once you've had heat exhaustion or heat stroke, your body cannot tolerate heat the way it once did. After a lifetime of being very careful to take care of myself out in the heat, I blew it that summer----not from carelessness, but just because the demands for assistance at fires were so high and I couldn't ignore them. Nowadays I no longer can stay out and work in the garden for as long as I want....I have to come indoors before it gets too hot, which cramps my style and makes me cranky, but I do it anyhow. I don't want to ever get too overheated again. This should have been an easier summer than it has been. We've gone 61 days now without receiving 0.25" of rainfall on any one day. At our house, our total rainfall in that 61 days is 0.13", meaning our dry spell here this summer has been more prolonged than our worst dry spell in 2011. What has saved the trees, at least, is that we had roughly 54" of rainfall this year (our annual average is 39") before it stopped raining. Our upper level soil moisture is 0.0 in the upper few inches of soil, but there is good soil moisture a couple of feet down. Our Keetch-Byram Drought Index at the present time is almost as high as it was during the worst of 2011. In 2011, I understood what was going on as the drought developed throughout the year....even back in the winter and spring as we headed into summer, so watching it was like seeing a train wreck coming.....This summer's Flash Drought has been harder to fathom because it came out of left field so abruptly, beginning while we still had roads and fields under water from the flooding. On the last day that it rained, we had no idea it was "never" going to rain again for the next couple of months. If we had, we probably would have enjoyed the flooding more than we did. It is 102 degrees here today and just so danged hot, and there have been fires in the area, but not in our fire district. (Knock on wood!) The cold front is supposed to come through here overnight and to bring us blessedly cooler temperatures and rainfall. I can't wait, and I'm gonna be one mad gardener if the rain misses us again, although I'll still enjoy having highs in the 80s or lower 90s instead of in the 100s. Our next door neighbor in Ft. Worth had the old hardy neon pink-flowered phlox commonly referred to as thrift. I loved hers, but I didn't have luck with it in our blackland prairie clay (right next door to us she had a much sandier soil), and I've never planted it here. We do have the native phlox that blooms in spring here. It lives happily in the bar ditch down by the road, where presumably it gets enough moisture from rain runoff to keep it happy....and Tim isn't allowed to mow it until it has finished blooming. On upland areas, we stay too dry for the native phlox to thrive, so I have to make sure we leave it alone and don't mow it back too early in the one area of our property that has enough moisture for it. Prunning in late fall or spring

If you have mostly macs then my suggestion is to leave any pruning to a bare minimum. You can deadhead whenever you want but deadheading is not the same as pruning. And pruning macs at just about any time is likely to remove potential flowers. It's all well and good to say that you can prune safely when flowering stops. But the flowering of macs, especially reblooming macs, doesn't have a defined cut-off date. In my climate they will continue to bloom well into fall as long as the weather is agreeable. When they finally do stop, it is long after the latent flower buds have been set for the coming season, so far too late to prune!! On macs and other old wood bloomers, I suggest not pruning at all except to remove any deadwood that fails to leaf out in spring. You can do rejuvenation pruning if the shrub gets too large for its site or becomes old and develops a gnarly, woody interior but be prepared to eliminate or reduce flowering if you do. And it is always preferable to prune any shrub in spring rather than fall, which can often expose plant tissue to unnecessary cold damage.

Well, this looks like a good place to pop my question in. I have a 3 or 4 year old "Huldine", which I had assumed was growing from multiple stems (it's planted in some astilbe to disguise the stems shooting straight up into the branches of a small crabapple). This spring I took a closer look at it and it's really only l stem coming from the ground, but the buds on that old stem have become stems themselves (not sure of the terminology here), which is why I thought I had multiple stems. I have been afraid to cut it way back because of something I read in a clematis book that said that if you cut into an old woody stem, it might just "give up the ghost". I'm not sure whether that means that one particular stem, or the whole plant, but I don't want to lose this clematis. I fearlessly cut my old woody Sweet Autumn clematis down to 6" every year with good results, so maybe the book was wrong? Or is there a difference between cutting it down every year from the start, and waiting 3 or 4 years to do it for the first time? I'm not a total beginner with clematis - I must have at least 20 type 2s and 3s, but I paid a lot for this one particular one and don't want to lose it.
Any help would be appreciated.

Ophelia...Clematis "Huldine" is a pruning group 3 which means it should be hard pruned every late winter/Early Spring to One inch above the first Leaf Axil..the vines you are seeing are growing outta each side of the Leaf Axil all the way up...You really should prune it...you'll have much better blooms and a more vigorous vine..remember to prune each year as I said and give it some Rose Fertilizer after pruning and water well...Clematis love for their roots to stay moist..About your Pruning group 2s...those you don't prune except to remove the dead vines/those that don't start budding at the leaf axil..you can prune these to shape as well....
Heide...Clematis "Jackmanii" is a pruning group 3 as well..so prune just like I told Ophelia..ok?..and fertilize it...Hope this has helped...Jeanne

Jeanne - thanks so much, you've given me the courage to do what I thought I should. Pruning it low will also give me the chance to send the shoots in different directions all over the tree for a more even coverage, which I've been wanting to do. I'm looking forward to a great year for it, thanks again.

A question about pruning. I have a Candide, which I forgot
to prune last year. It is growing up an iron trellis. It
leafed out at the top of the trellis and is covered in huge
blooms now. it looks kinda funny, because it appears to be growing in mid air. How should I prune it after blooming?
I also have just gotten a real intense Bluish Purple
one, that I don't know the variety, so I need help with
that one. Thanks
