This was a great article but all too brief. Great photos,Freda.

The short list of deer resistant plants/shrubs lacked vitex which is one of those aromatic leaved plant materials that deer avoid. A valuable flowering tree, it can flower repeatedly three or four times a year if you deadhead the seed heads.

Bambi may leave coneflowers (echinacea) alone but Thumper eats this down to ground level. They also come back and eat any new growth sprouting from the echinacea roots.

Dottie -- Steve selected the plants to feature and I had no idea what he'd use. He and the photographer walked around taking photos.

I have so many more plants than mentioned -- vitex, buddleia, monarda, salvia, ornamental grasses..and on and on.

Thumper and his buddies hang out in my garden and I ran two out last evening. The only repellent that I use is for rabbits, not deer, and I only spray rudbeckia and the echinacea when they are a few inches high. Once they are in bloom, I stop spraying. The repellent that works best for me is I MUST GARDEN that is made locally in Chapel HIll, but I have no affiliation with them.

So funny you posted this... I finally had time last night to crack open the July issue and that article was what I turned to first. I will go back tonight and re-read it and study the pics closer. I think all coneflowers may be my favorite flowering perennial this year, due to their "no" maintenance, drought tolerance, butterfly and bee attraction, and the fact that they reseed to make babies. Last year I planted some of the newer varieties like Harvest Moon and Sundown and I think they are beautiful !! They grew sturdy, strong stems and have tons of beautiful, long lasting flowers. I couldn't be mnore pleased with them. Will the new varieties make babies too ? I have 2 reseeded baby plants of Magnus that are about to flower, and I wish I had more so I could transplant them to other areas of the yard. I would love it if Sundown and Harvest Moon had babies. I will be looking forward to more articles from your DIL's garden !! Congrats :)

Sally - Thank you for your kind words. And yes the boxes are pressure treated pine and they are holding pretty good in this weather, easy to make too. Tom - Thank you. And yes I moved a long time ago in other territory, lol. On the sides of the house I have a Dancy tangerine, a calamondin, a pomegranate, a cherry of the rio grande or something like that, the lychee and in the future I like to add more, one by one. Talking about the whitefly again, I don't know if you saw Al from the container forum posted a spray that he uses, it has neem oil (cold pressed-virgin only) that he gets at Dyna-Gro, water, dish soap and alcohol, I don't remember what thread I saw but if you don't find it maybe I can look for it. It sounds like a good one to try. And don't be a stranger.:) have to show up more often, lol. By the way, do you remember my fig tree? I was not happy with that and I have been putting everything in the book to fix it even Bernie's gifts of guano, worm castings and voila this year I have great figs and I made fig preserves today, also a mango marmalade. I have food that I put away to last me a long time... Julia - Thank you, the boxes don't have a bottom, the grass was weed whack short and I put layers of cardboard and newspaper, another layer of coastal hay, peat moss, black cow and bagged garden soil. I've subscribed to Southern Living since l983 and had issues sent to my mom the last ten years or so, as well. This year she asked me not to renew her subscription for the same reasons that many of you have mentioned; I have felt the same way for a very long time. I can't remember the last time I did more than flip through the magazine for about three minutes and then toss it. So, we no longer receive Southern Living. Perhaps part of the reason is that after over twenty years, nothing is "new." I do think that as in the case of HGTV, a different generation is in charge and it's obvious we're not on the same page. Traditional Home, Veranda, Blueprint, Domino and others are magazines that are more interesting to me at this time; however, several years ago I canceled Traditional Home because it was so bland and boring. I suppose at one time or another they all reinvent themselves, like we do from time to time.

Les the scallops were on the menu last night !! Lynn please do come see us it would be wonderful. all of you have been so kind. I will post when the article will appear. They will be talking about the town of Waverly also as it is quite Historic and interesting. Only 225 people in the town. Our fish is selected by my son's supplier as the boats come in in Hawaii. Each fish is line caught on "day boats" so no nets that destroy the ocean and also not kept on boats on ice for days. It is FedXed to us and arrives about 18 hrs out of the water. Very fresh and wonderful. We have lots of local gardeners who supply the fruits and vegetables too so it is a community achievement. We are really glad that they are recognizing the area. Just got done reading the article and came here to post a thread about it - ya beat me Dottie :D - I agree it was all too brief - thank goodness we have her expert advice and knowledge on a pretty regular basis - both here and on several other GW forums plus her blog :) ......

Never tried Bobbex. I have so few plants to protect from rabbits (mostly the constantly reseeding rudbeckia) and the coneflower seedlings that I start.

Lynne - Thank you! I was a very reluctant subject for Steve. He was after me for over a year. I think I need another 10-15 years to get the garden the way I want it! :-)

If this heat doesn't kill all the plants....we've had no significant rain here in the month of June...the hottest on record. Was 101 yesterday.

Here in western Union Cty we watch the thunderclouds drench from SouthPark up to the lake areas while we get brief light showers on the perimeter of the storms.
Union never stopped the watering restrictions but I'm sure I'm not the only one sneaking extra water to the beds and shrubs.
