where to get small "starter" succulents

I can't afford to buy the beauties I see in online shops, and I don't have enough plants yet for anyone to want to trade with me (gazillions of healthy green spider plant pups, but...nothing else), so where would you suggest I find some nice, interesting, inexpensive little succulent starts to get my collection going? I have jades and common things, but I'm pretty enamored with Sedum, Haworthia, Aeonium, some Kalanchoes, less common Crassula, and so on.

Also, I really want to try my hand with some of the "living stone" species, but I've only seen them for sale as seeds, which seems an excellent way for a relative newbie to the Mesembs to become disheartened very fast. Hard enough to grow a started plant!

I'm already all over eBay, but other suggestions, or specific eBay sellers would be greatly appreciated. (I'm shamefully envious of another poster who found Haworthia, lithops, and another lovely oddity at Home Depot, of all places!)

Hey can u help go down to whats up with my cactus and list whats wrong. Also don't bother seeds get theme from online or a hardware store

I just bought "9 miscellaneous succulents" and "9 miscellaneous cacti" on amazon. Both are really inexpensive, it looks like he raised the price of the plants & lowered shipping costs http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ol/B005WCKBQO/ref=olp_tab_all here's a link. When mine came in the mail I was so happy they're really cool & diverse & they were all healthy so I'd definitely buy from them again. The only down side is that they don't identify any of the plants for you. I've also purchased a lot of succulents from Home Depot but beware I bought a couple of plants that were infested with spider mites that spread to one of my herb plants. Also I'm not sure if it's my lack of experience or what but my Home Depot succulents don't survive.

I used the Jiffy Peat Pellets with the 72-tray. If you google 'Jiffy Greenhouse', it should take you right to it. The tray, lid and pellets cost me $6.00 at Walmart. I've seen a similar 'knock-off' product at Home Depot made by Burpee for roughly the same price, although the pellets seemed smaller. Once my tomatoes get their first 'true' set of leaves and/or I see roots coming out the side netting, I transfer to peat pots ($1.39 for ten of them) with actual soil to fill in the spaces. I only use the 3' pots since I don't plan on them living there long enough before the whole thing, pot and all will get transplanted to the garden. Also note that you should be able to skip the whole peat pot thing and move the pellets with seedlings directly to your garden. You might want to add some washed sharp builders sand to your soil. Be careful that you take your roof off before the sun comes out. One might cook the plants. Jade is the most persnickety of the plants that you mentioned. The others should be able to handle what you mentioned. Especially if they have elevation. The aloe and the echeveria will have to come inside for winter Jade especially. Black prince can handle some frost but only some. Aloes are all dependent on the variety of aloe that you have. Aloe maculata and aloe striata can handle some cold and moisture. but other aloes don't like moisture or cold, but humidity seems alright. the stonecrop should be fine if the drainage has been addressed. Is this right up by your house and do you have gutters? I know, dumb question. I think the jade is better in a pot and protected from summer rain.. They like a very gritty mix and really do not like wet feet and they will rot in a hurry. Hens and chicks will do well outside and love a pile of rocks. They grow on cliffs in Europe and can take things quite cold. My family grew them on a rock wall in Pennsylvania. Drainage, drainage drainage. Rot shoes up in different plants in different wAYS. If you think your plant's is rotting. digit out of the ground and check the roots and cut off the rot, let it callous by drying and put it in some more porous medium and then do not water itt in.

Repotted them yesterday. Now they have plenty room to grow nice and big. They all had healthy roots. Watering gonna be easier now as I have more experience about when to fill up the reservoirs than I had with peaty soils. Will they grow without artificial light? It's pretty dark during winter, sun comes out like 10 minutes a day or less :( A Haworthia upload img Another Haw. Sourdough starter is a non-starter

I'm glad I posted this -- I'm learning all sorts of things! I didn't realize that sourdough isn't necessarily sour -- but it makes sense the commerical stuff is more so. (I had a friend's homemade sourdough recently, and while it was a very nice bread I remember thinking it wasn't nearly sour enough!) The sour taste is really what I'm going for -- if I can't get that going naturally, I'll looking into adding the taste in with other things. (I picked up a littl container of buttermilk powder for another recipe -- that might be a good taste to play around with!) Thanks for the explanation on acidity and the viscosity of the starter, Carol; that's helps a lot. The alchemy of baking has always intimidated me -- it's good to have a clearer idea of what's going on. I'll keep plugging away for a while longer with this starter, perhaps feed it whole wheat for a while and see if that builds up it's puny flour-lifting muscles. If not, the soured yeast dough may be the way to go, jessica; I didn't know you could do that. It might actually be better way to go, given the infrequency with which I bake. I'm still going to work with this starter -- Ill keep you posted!

You got some pretty little plants, cljcksn. I like the Sedum, and the tight little blue rosette of...Echeveria sp. maybe(?) They're a bit out of my price range though (poverty bites). When I eventually get to the Home Depot in Eugene, I'll look at their plants.

Thanks, Spike. I wish I could help you more with your cacti, but beyond a little knowledge of scarring, or maybe recognizing watering or draining issues, I'm just not good enough with cactus to be of much use. I'm sure much more experienced growers will help you soon though.

I don't know about Oregon, but around here the local hardware store sells 2" succulents for $2 and I believe 4" for $5? The closest nurseries here have a better selection with slightly higher prices (still only a couple dollars). But it's California, and what with the drought everyone's suddenly into xeriscaping. Even the grocery store had an outdoor display of cacti and succulents.

I was in Eugene today, and found a totally salvageable root-rotted Aeonium 'kiwi' at Coastal Farm and Feed for $1. I also picked up some unknown sedums, a Crassula argentum 'gollum' and a 'Hobbit' for $2 each, and I got a bunch of odd leaves to root (Home Depot wouldn't discount their dying or dead plants, but didn't mind if I picked up dropped leaves). So, nothing really exciting - no extra cool Kalanchoes or mesembs or anything, but not a bad haul for a few bucks.

Would you believe Home Depot's succulents are grown in Canada?? Crazy.

Trying to buy cuttings rather than full grown plants might be a cheaper option. I have seen those on Etsy and ebay.

Also, getting a photobucket account is totally worth it. it lets you post multiple pics in a thread, just copy and paste the html link when you upload a photo to it. I always take tons of pics of my stuff :)
