I really am asking for your help please

I just received a grafted Astrophytom v. caput-mudusa, will this plant tolerate hot sun this time of the year. It is growing with wire like leaves coming out of the top of the grafted plant. I understand this plant is rare, and can't find any information even in Dr. Anderson's catus book. My hunch is that I can grow it like any other Astropytom that I have, but really need some reinforcement on this? Help please from all of you. I now need your help. Norma

My Dear Norma,

Your Digitostima is, I understand, to be grown like any 'other' Astrophytum.

I don't think it had been discovered when Mr. Anderson put out his book.

Gracie, It is OK. Perhaps, if we are successful, we will help you grow into a gardener. You know, as beautiful as any home is and can be, each home needs a lovingly planted and well-maintained landscape to showcase it to its' best advantage. If you are in the Oklahoma City area, you are in zone 7. If you have clay soil, the absolute best thing you can do for your plants before they are planted is to amend the soil so that it both holds water well and drains well. To do this, add the following to your soil: peat moss OR compost, composted manure and finely shredded pine bark (or cypress) mulch. You don't have to add tons and tons, but at least 2 to 4 inches as a minimum. Till it into the soil (if you don't have a tiller, perhaps you can rent one or borrow one). Then, rake and level the soil, and plant. You will notice that the improved soil is mounded up somewhat higher than the surrounding grade, and that is a good thing. Improving the clay even a small bit will help your plants to grow faster and to maintain good health. If you want to go one step further and make the area low-maintenance, cover the prepared soil with a cloth-type landscape fabric mulch. Peg down the ends of the fabric mulch with the landscape staples (U-shaped metal things) or plastic pegs (usually green, they look like large green plastic nails). Cut an "X" shape in the fabric and plant in that spot. When you're done planting, cover the fabric with the mulch of your choice. This extra step will repay you many times over by making that area low-maintenance. The plants will benefit because they won't have grass or weeds competing with them for moisture or nutrition. Now, about the plants. In order to decide what you want to plant, figure out what you like. I'd rather plant shrubs and vines that have a look to them that I like seeing, and not just a plant that someone recommended. If you don't know what you like, go to local nurseries or to the Botanic Garden or to the Myriad and look at the plants. When you see one you like, try to find out what it is. (Hopefully the plants are well-labeled.) BEFORE you buy, research the plant and make sure you understand its' needs. For example, some plants need full sun, some need full shade, others tolerate partial shade/sun and some (especially the holly family shrubs) can grow in either one. Also make sure you understand what the plants mature height and spread will be. It can be tricky. The red-tip photinias, as Randy and I have already said, can get very large. I have seen them get 20 feet tall and 10 feet wide in less than a decade. Since most people plant then only a few feet from one another, they begin to crowd each other out. Pruning them works for a while, but after several years of that, you have pruned them back to the point that all you have are huge limbs with lots of stubble covered by leaves. They are also overused, and I like using plants that aren't as commonly used. Your clay soil may be a faster-draining clay because it has some sand or loam, or it may be a heavy, thick clay that bakes brick hard in summer and holds pools of water in spring. Take the type of clay you have into consideration when choosing your plants. Last year,I compiled long lists of clay soil-tolerant plants for Emily. I'm going to go to this forum's back pages and find those and bump them up to the top for you. You might find some additional ideas there. Based on just the pose, it looks like an inchworm (geometrid moth caterpillar), but the photo is a little blurry. Is it spiky or furry? Is it big enough for its claws to scratch you or could the scratch have come from a trig it was sitting on when it fell that you inadvertently scratched yourself with? Can you get a better shot?

You said it. I do know productive members of society who smoke, and I know others who abuse their bodies with food, abuse their minds with television. It's not the guns killing people, it's the people killing people. That said, perhaps that is his one vice? If he works as hard as she says he does, he must need some time to relax. Also, is he a homeowner? I thought it was the OP's house. If it is, then expecting him to contribute and feel equal may be difficult. Have you tried interesting him in exercise? That gives a great natural high. Does he have hobbies you could share? If you're really not interested in being with him because he smokes, yet you knew he smoked, did not ever own a home, etc... prior to getting married, you set yourself up for failure. Don't blame him for your inability to change him. You married a bachelor who has the social and homemaking skills of a college student (no offense to college students!) He doesn't want to grow up. You already have. Invite him to grow up with you, or get out. You deserve more, and your kids deserve more. By the way, don't ever assume kids don't know what's going on. They will find out sooner or later, and you will have to reconcile the "don't do as I do (or DH does) but do as I say" and we know that never works. I'm sorry, but you said to be frank. What types of evergreens? If they are close to the neighbors side, are they ok with that? Some evergreens shed their needles and can be messy. Some grow quickly, some grow very slow, most grow in width as well as up and will quickly spread into the space there...and most are likely to give a lot of shade, meaning that you will be limited on what you can plant around them if there is not much sun. Pachysandra is a nice ground cover, very low maintainence and stays green all year. But, it does spread fast. I wouldn't put any ground cover if you have any desire to grow flower there at any point. If it were me, I would put up a hedge type shrub to act as a fence along the neighbors side, look for one that is pretty tame and grows fast - then you won't have to look at that boat. Gotta love people who park boats in their yard. We have neighbors with a boat the size of Rhode Island in their back yard. They got it cheap after Hurricane Katrina, took a flat bed truck and a crane to get it up here to the northeast, they put it in the yard, and there it has sat for the last several years - they worked on it for one summer and then just forgot about it, not even bothering to cover it in the winter...slowly it is turning into the world's largest birdhouse and the neighborhood's biggest eyesore...but what the heck. I digress... Anyway, hedges. Yes. And then something pretty and fast growing, centered in that space there. Like a Bradford Pear or a Wheeping Cherry. Plant pachysandra around it, or make a nice little flower bed with decorative rocks or whatever your husband wants. That's what I would do! Good luck!

The German version of Anderson's book "Das gro Kakteen-Lexikon" issued in 2005 has Digitostigma included (and some of Anderson's mistakes corrected)!

This is what I found on Google - your mates at the Huntington can tell you more, but I really know nothing past what I told you, other than one of the discoverers is named Manuel and he posts at that other C&S site that isn't Dave's. The following is quoted:

A new Astrophytum with Jellyfish Head

In the Issue 2(18) we wrote about a recently discovered monotypic genus Digitostigma caput-medusae . Just a few months after this discovery, David Hunt transfers the plant into the genus Astrophytum . Hunt proposes to keep the existing species name of caput-medusae . Hence the current name of the plant is Astrophytum caput-medusae (Latin for "star-plant with jellyfish head "). Though flowers and seeds of Digitostigma are actually characteristic of Astrophytum (Photos 1 and 2), the plant itself is very different from any known Astrophytum . It resembles Ariocarpus agavoides or Leuchtenbergia principis (Photo 3). Below we are quoting some excerpts from the David Hunt's publication [1]:

"The authors of Digitostigma caput-medusae are to be congratulated on a truly remarkable discovery, but the feeling of our group is that its peculiar habit is not sufficient in itself to justify excluding it from Astrophytum , with which it shares unusual and significant features in common, i.e. the floccose indumentum and eccentric (hat-shaped) seeds, as well as having very similar flowers. Although the possibility is not ignored that it could be an ancient intergeneric hybrid, as has been suggested for the origin of Geohintonia , there is no evidence for this at present, and subgeneric rank within Astrophytum seems more appropriate:
Astrophytum subg. Stigmatodactylus D. Hunt nom. nov. Replaced synonym: Digitostigma Velazco & Nevarez, Cact. Suc. Mex. 47(4): 79 (2002). Type: Digitostigma caput-medusae Velazco & Nevarez l.c. 81-82.

'Digitostigma' not only controverses Linnaean canons for the formation of generic names but implies that the plant is notable for its finger-shaped stigmas rather than its spotted tubercles, contrary to the authors explicit intention. For this reason the opportunity afforded by the change of rank has been taken to provide an unambiguous name formed according to classical usage.

Propagation efforts

While botanists are still arguing about its position within the botanical nomenclature, we hope to see the plant in culture soon. Given the popularity of this species, there is no doubt that the plant will be intensively propagated upon its introduction in culture, and will quickly become common, as it had happened to Geohintonia . Considering its relation to the genus Astrophytum , we speculate that propagation of Digitostigma will not present significant difficulties, even for hobbyists.

The US section of the (Astro-Meister Group) reports about their reproduction initiative of A. caput-medusae in the United States. They have recently announced that seedlings of A. caput-medusae might be available to its members as early as by summer 2004 [2]:

"Our efforts in obtaining seed or seedlings of Astrophytum caput-medusae seem to be a success. Seсor A. M. Francisco of a renowned Botanical Garden near Mexico City told us about their reproduction project of the rare and probably endangered species. Seed is said to have been officially collected from several Caput-medusae populations in Nuevo Leуn by "workmates of Seсores Velazco and Nevбrez". Seedlings are grafted on top of Pereskiopsis and Echinopsis . The intention is a fast production of many offsprings. Seсor Francisco wants to give us 10 seedlings for a reasonable price. Additionally we have to pay for shipping & handling plus the quite high costs for CITES documents and phyto-sanitary papers (for U.S. Dept. of Agriculture). If our transfer of ten seedlings from Mexico to the U.S. works flawlessly, we're going to multiply our Caput-medusae stock in no time to get seedlings for all our members by summer 2004.

Latest information : We heard rumors about illegal collecting of Caput-medusae in their habitat. It is said that breeders in Vista/CA got their hands on illegal seed. Is that true? We don't know. Hopefully the Mexicans can protect this plant. The discovery of Geohintonia mexicana was a real nightmare for the species. We wish to let all of our members know: People who involve themselves in illegal plant trade cannot be members of Astro-Meister anymore."

More room for hybridization

It is very probable that there will be numerous attempts of hybridization of A. caput-medusae with the other species of the genus Astrophytum , and also with the species of Ariocarpus, Leuchtenbergia, Obregonia and similar genera. We predict that in a few years, our e-magazine will be publishing photographs of fascinating cultivars of A. caput-medusae , coming from Japan. Besides the aesthetic aspects of the crossing, the successes and failures of hybridization could help in better understanding the positioning of this new species in the Cactaceae family
