Has anyone here started a passion flower vine from seed?

I am having 0 luck getting the seeds to germinate...and, I'm starting to lose faith. lol

I am trying to grow Pasionaria blue.....It's an heirloom variety.

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!!

yes, i have. Didn't do anything special- just kept it reasonably warm & moist. They didn't take all that long- maybe a month... it's been a couple yrs. I've done p. elata and 'amythyst'.

i started some from seed saved from fruit. it took a very long time to germinate them.

I have a volunteer pecan tree and it quickly became the largest tree in my yard. That was about 7 yrs ago and based on the height of my house, it must be a good 25' tall now and growing on the sunny south, the brutal side. I just didn't know I ever wanted a tree there. The tree won in 3 years. I discovered pecan trees first growth is undergound and set a root system that was 3x's deeper and bigger than the height and canopy above ground. It must have borrowed water from a dripper during the summer about 5' away. A friend of mine told me she had even hired bulldozers to break through her caliche to get a tree established with a similar tap root growing, without any luck. She was less than 2 miles away and (I think) very dedicated. If you want pecans you might want to get a tree for that. I was told seeds usually aren't true to the parent and mine probably won't produce nuts. But who knows? This tree is just now mature enough to surprise me again. I would love to have my own pecans. It's a very pretty tree. It has definatley cooled off the yard and the house. The leaves come in just when the summer heat starts, yet I don't loose the winter sun. The fallen leaves are good mulch at a good time. The bare branches at Christmas have provided nice seasonal variety. It also survived a micro burst last summer. My patio cover couldn't even do that.

Angie, Did you plant the entire passion fruit or did you separate the seeds from inside the fruit? The 2 fruit i got from my vine are only about 1 centimeter in diameter. It seems that it would be easier to plant the entire fruit. Thanks Fern in Fort Myers

I've never been successful at rooting maypops, Sue, but I have been successful at growing them from seeds. I've got two P. incarnata 'alba' (white flowering form) seedlings in my rooting cage right now that I'll be planting out pretty soon. The seeds are odd. I plant mine fresh with the natural stuff surrounding the actual seed intact - I can't remember what that stuff is, but it's the sour stuff that you can make juice from if you have the patience to squeeze it out. A lot of people say take it off and soak the seeds in orange juice, but why? The natural juice is acidic. Some will come up right away, and others won't come up until next year, but the germination rate is always low for me. Still, it only takes a few to wind up with a whole field of it - you saw for yourself how it spreads from underground roots. There's probably some way you could start them from the underground root itself - maybe somebody else will know. Sherry

Hi Tim No we don't have restrictions, I receive seeds from all over, some even write wooden toy on the packaging for bulbs I receive. I would be happy to receive seeds from someone who actually grows them because many seeds bought on eBay don't germinate. Regards Vici

If by Pasionaria blue you mean Passiflora caerulea 'Blue Passion Flower' - I have a yard full of it. I brought one tiny plant with me when I moved here. It escaped its pot out the bottom one summer when I took the saucer away and left it sitting on the bare ground. Now I will never finish pulling it out of the woods. I like the flowers. Mine has never produced fruit tho this variety is supposed to be edible. It is amazingly winter hardy (only losing leaves when it gets down into the teens!) for a tropical. It is considered one of the most invasive of the invasive passion vines.

Wow...I'm not exactly sure if that is the one I'm trying to get to grow...That's all the seed package said.

They are so pretty....I think I might be able to just let it go crazy in my yard. lol ( I say that now....it's empty now).

I bought a pack from Lowe's this spring. I put them inside a wet paper towel and closed it in a ziplock. At 78 degrees, it took about 3 weeks. Only one seed germinated. The rest turned to mush. It was the only really large, hard seed of the bunch. That vine is now 3' tall.
