Community Gardens

starting a community garden.

Hi folks, I have an empty lot next to my house. I think that with a little T.L.C., it could be turned into a great garden for my neghborhood. I'd like for it to be organic. I'd really like some thoughts on how I can get this idea put into action. Can I just start planting. Do I have to go through the city. I've come to understand that It was once part of an alley that has since become non existant.

I hope these links (not really links, but cut & paste-able) prove helpful. The first is to the American Community Gardening Association. Lots of information and good links. The second is also from the ACGA site, if you scroll down, it's got an alphabetical listing of links by state (including Ohio).

The third is to Philly's Neighborhood Gardens Association's "Getting Started" page. Good info. with good links. I imagine that most of the info. is transferable across the country.

Is there anyone interested in trying to start a community garden in North/central OH?? I would like to get one going but I really dont know how/where to start and it would be great if there were any other individuals in my area also interested in doing this because I know I cant do it alone. Also if ANYONE has any advice/ideas on how/where to start, or any other helpful advice for a newbie to community gardening I really would appreciate it......thanx

About 2 years ago, our church started a community garden. I just received my 2nd plot. It's mostly trial and error. It's like having an in-ground garden, but less weeding. Just set some rules...do not pick from other gardens, be mindful if you are doing trellises to not block out sun to adjacent plots (there is about 2 feet between each of our plots, and we have 48), help each other water if you have a spicket, mulch walkways, don't throw weeds and dead plants in walkway - set up a compost area - that what we did....this is some rules we have in ours.

my tomato seedling sale has sprouted into the executive director of my non-profit wanting to start a community garden. Anyone with experience doing this? I know there is a GW group and I will contact them, also found a communicty garden assoc on the web, but you all have done so many things - I figured there was probably some wisdom to glean here. My Reply: If I was you, I would study your bylaws of your organization, and your Organization 501-3-c status, and decide if you want to Umbrella the Community Garden or make it a part of your organization service to the community. Therefore, the broad members, and volunteers, and organization employees, can all share in the project, making life a bit easer for you. Well, that's all the time have this morning, because it's time for me to wake-up, from feeling sleepy, and get myself back to my big garden, Amen!
