If you want another one that is easy - I'm becoming a "Charles Grimaldi" champion. Someone said you'd have to shoot one of those to kill it. And they're right.

I plunked little skinny greenies from trimming in a glass of water. They have 2 inch roots on them already. Less than 2 weeks!

As I'm struggling with funkies, babying them, here are these little mean greenies over there going "vrooooooommmmmmmmmmm" It makes me laugh seeing the differences.

If you load your pics to (I use Photobucket Highly recommend)one of those places.. in PB at the bottom of the page it has a place to "Generate HTML and image code" click the little box next to the image~ click the generate HTML and image code.. To have a clickable image copy and paste the first optioin to the body of the message box @ GW( Thanks Ruth Ann).. then preview and you see your pic come up..I know someone here can probably make this so much clearer...

I also use Photobucket. I like posting thumbnails (what Chena described) but you can also just c/p the bottom (3rd) line of text under the pic. You probably want to reduce the size if you chose that option.

I do think that most of the doubles and variegated brugs are slower growers but well worth the little extra time they require.

jumpin4joy, doubles and triples are started in the soil with bottom heat. Ususally fuzzier leafed and these do require more sun and heat to do their thing One the variegated ones, most are shade lovers except for a few.

Is it worth it to buy cuttings from places like ebay? Im nervous about it.

I mentioned in another post that I've had mixed results with Ebay sellers. I've received nice and rotten cuttings from the same seller on more then one occasion. Seed Sprout and Country Garden nurseries are the only ones I can think of that have consistantly high quality plants.

I dont think doubles/triples are any harder per se... I start them all the same way. Water in a glass till nubbies and at least one root then into pots. What seems to make the difference especially for beginners is how mature the wood it on the cutting. Harder wood is easier I really dont leave hard wood in water long at all and it can go right into the soil.
My favorite cuttings to root are semi- hard wood (where the bottom of the cutting is just turning from green to a harder (browner) wood). Skinny green cuttings can be a PIA but I seem to have good luck with really green sucker cuttings (coming from the base of the plant). Everyone has thier preferences I guess.

A baggy over a green cutting will help keep humidity high so it can root and keep it from drying up. This thread is so long that's probably already been mentioned.

Jumpin4joy,this is a question that needs some solid answers.I've been growing brugs since about 1999,and have had tons of fun growing this awesome plant.When they first came around,it seemed the plants were simply called by their color-pink,yellow,white.Then came the hybrids-Dr seuss,charles grimaldi,frosty pinks.These all were improvements on the unnamed varieties.Then came the initial double hybrids-the 1st being introduced into the united states-Herrinhauser Garten-Wow-a double Orange from germany!Sometimes it will bloom the 1st year-sometimes it takes the 2nd year to see a bloom!!!Slower growing,slower to bloom.Now,we are seeing the latest double,and even triple brugs that are every bit as fast to grow,and to bloom as any brug.These are the ones that truly impress Me!!!I grow about 14 or so doubles,and my favs are the faster growing ones!!My herrinhauser garten does have a nice bloom,but Double peach(I've posted pics here recently),Tiara(also posted pics)Creamsickle,species are all faster growing,and blooming the 1st year.My Tiara was such a nice bloomer-it produced 2 flushes it's 1st year,and the double peach had Huge blooms.Also,some doubles are more difficult to root-even the faster growing ones I've observed seem to root slower.Mark

Thanks Mark for the info. In the 1990s, I had a "frosty pink", a peach (was actually more a yellow), and a white. That's all they were called. The only one "called" something was the "frosty pink." I still have the sticker on the front of my very old Sunset Gardens book. (grin)

They were still beautiful though! (grin)

Hi Gloria.I've not been posting here recently-but Now that the Plants are in the greenhouse,maybe I'll have more time to read and post.Now,these brugs unpredictable.I've talked to folks whose Herrinhauser Garten Bloomed the 1st year-but mine to 2 years to bloom.Tecknodweeb-Frosty Pink is One Superb Bloomer-Tons of Blooms-In Wave after Wave,and they Get to Be Such HUGE plants-Mine Come back from The Roots every year-to End Up Over 6 or 7 feet tall.

Trigger - I don't have those anymore. They're still in CA.

Now that you mention it - I don't have a "Frosty" Pink anywhere in my BOB. Hmmm.. . . maybe in the spring I'll have to look around - and do something about that.

I'm up against it now - can't buy anything else this year. Cold snap is coming - and probably for good.

Guess it escaped me that I didn't have one of the "staples" of Brugs.

We just got it last night!

Mark and I are in a competition to see who gets first frost- he usually wins, because he is closer to the foothills of the mountains, altho we are less that 20 miles apart! But, now, like fir him, all mine is inside and safe for the winter ahead.

I have not had enough experience with doubles/triples to say with conviction that they are slower than single bloomers but it does seem thay produce fewer blossoms and there's a longer period between flushes. Just my observation with a limited number of doubles. And since I'm just now rooting my named doubles and my seedling doubles and triples, no input there yet!

Just an aside, I did get one more double/triple seedling to bloom for the first time about a week ago- the blossom turned pale peach on the second day but was deformed enough that I didn't bother to photo. A heads-up for seed growers, 1/3 of my seedlings from Genevieve cross seeds were either triple or double. Good odds for getting a double/triple.

Hi Brenda!I jealous-we live less than 20 miles apart-but you get an extra week ontil your 1st frost.I cut down several brugs the night before we got a frost last month that were about to bloom!!!!Did you use a chainsaw to cut those giant brugs down???Folks-that is no joke-her brugs are nice sized trees!!Must be the combination of that rich soil,and 1st generation hybrid Vigor!!Walking amongst her brugs was like walking in the woods-with her brugs towering overhead.I do think,as time goes on,with more and more doubles coming out,We're gonna be seeing more of the faster growth rate,easy blooming doubles.Brenda,that awesome double you have seems to be quite a candidate.I can hardly wait to trial it out next year.For now,it occupies a sacred spot in the greenhouse. Brenda, I havent seen it but my mouth was watering reading that post. Please include me in on that one next year. Whats your take on zone 8 full sun in sandy Soil. My Dr. Suess up by my house is awesome. It towers as well but I cant put everything against the house. I have a full acre I want to plant in Brugs.

Gosh so much information to digest at one time. I've got several of the single Brugs ya'll mentioned for postage. I even tried to buy some doubles or triples on ebay. I can see this Brug and Dat thing can get out of hand real quick can't it?

It has been one month and one day since I saw my very first Brugmansia and I now have 10 named singles and a whole bunch of NOID singles. LOL

I am going to get all the barn sweepings out this winter and work them into the areas I will be planting these little Brug jewels all over the place. I'm fairly sure they will love it here and I have plenty of room for them. I've been working on turning this place into my own little tropical paradise. I think 35 acres is enough room to raise as many different kinds as I can get my hands on.

I too have a bunch of Banana Trees and other tropical plants. I'm still looking for someone to trade something for and get a Pink Banana tree.

What do you professional growers use to provide heat underneath the cuttings? Could I use an electric heating pad with a large glass cake pan setting on top of it for the double and triple cuttings should I come up with some?
If not please tell me something that your common home gardener could use for heat on the bottom. I know if I tried the heating pad I couldn't get it wet. I don't think that would be a problem. Please give me some other advice and suggestions. I would be heartbroken if I killed one of them babies.

I think that if you didn't have too many that you wanted to have bottom heat for, then maybe you could put some pots on the top of your water heater. I know that I have put pots of seeds on top of it until they sprouted. Also the top of the fridge might be warm enough too.
Has anyone ever done it that way?
BTW I got a double orange cutting a couple of weeks ago and put it in a jar of water until there were large white nubbies on it and then potted it up and set it on a table in my sunroom.(kept it out of direct sun) I can now see big fat white roots between the soil and the side and bottom of the clear plastic cup that it is planted in. :)

As long as you have average household temps I wouldn't worry about providing bottom heat for brug cuttings. If you really want to use heat or it's exceptionally cool where your plants are then play it safe and buy a seed mat. It will be running 24/7 and exposed to moisture so you should use something specifically designed for plants. I also don't cover my cuttings.
