New owner of Meyer lemon

Wow, so I'm psyched about getting this Meyer lemon tree for my birthday. I'm a succulent person and know nothing about citrus plants. Can someone give me a crash course on what to buy for supplies in particular fertilizer. I live in New England and I plan on growing inside except for the summer months. I usually put my succulents out in late April and bring them back in late sept early October. I have a southern facing window and I'm looking forward to the challenge.

i have had my lemon tree for over a year now, but don't think i know enough to help you out :-) still getting a feel for it myself. i can tell you everything you need to know is already here on this forum! just start reading old posts and search for stuff. you have to search for 3-1-1 mix in here because that is a life changer!! it is someone's own special potting soil mix and they tell you how to make it. good luck!

so mdlemonnewbie for the last year you have been adding just water? How is your plant currently looks like ?

Rhizo stole my thunder!! She is 100 percent right! I had to learn the hard way to see her point. And yes, I had to read these threads over and over again. Do you know what main points I got? You have to make the roots happy to have a beautiful vigorous plant. And two, unless your plants get more than 6 hours of sunlight, it will not be happy. The pruning should be your last concern. Make these two things happen asap, a great soiless medium for happy roots, and lots of sunlight, and you will be coming back here a very happy camper..:-)

HEy Mike, Actually, I did have some plumeria when I first met you but not many....JUST RECENTLY HAVE I BECOME OBSESSED LMAO!!! I'm telling ya the egg method is awesome!!! IT really thickens those fragile roots up quickly. If you can Mike...just try it with one and plant it in a clear plastic pot. I swear, in 6 months(maybe even shorter if the plumeria is out in full sun and temps over 80),you will see for yourself. You will even see how the roots seek out that egg, and the roots end up doubling in girth!! I will NOT repot unless I have the eggs! IT's not worth it to me, and I have found that I end up with much better blooms. Also, I FINALLY got a fig tree collection going!! I have 7 diffrent varieties now and I will have one more to add here very soon. I tried my first ripe fig and it was DELICIOUS!! To me the flavor is very tropical and yummy! Man, I am not going to convince you on growing mango am I!! I'm telling ya...my citrus take more light and in general there 100% less finicky!! I will have to email some pics of mine. I also cannot get my D.R. to bloom but there seedlings. Your actually warmer and you have a longer growing season than I do. The mango will bloom in the early spring and will ripen before you have to bring them indoors. I hate to see you rob yourself of such an awesome experience just because you don't think you have enough light! Cmon Mike were's your sense of adventure?! Take care, Andrew

Most likely you're overwatering. It's practically assured, infact. Watering should be thorough, wetting and flushing the entire soil-mass. Then, the soil should be allowed to dry out between waterings. Use a wooden dowel or skewer stuck all the way into the container to measure the amount of moisture in the deeper layers (this is key). If the stick comes out clean and dry, water. If the stick comes out damp or dark, don't water. re-test every 2 days until the soil is dry enough to water again. A wick (synthetic fiber/string) can also be stuffed into a drainage hole and allowed to dangle below the container to reduce excess moisture in the bottom of the pot. These tricks will help you limp your plant through the winter, but they won't take the place of a properly made mix and a full re-potting next Spring/Summer. Josh

From Silica 3 years ago last modified: 3 years ago The reason that the new leaves on your tree wilt much sooner than the more mature leaves, is due to the fact that tender young leaves have a much higher transpiration rate then do older leaves. Therefore, they lose water to the atmosphere at a higher rate than the tree's older leaves. This is a VERY common occurrence and not much to worry about, unless the root system becomes overly dry.

Yes, for here in New England I have been using the 5.1.1, the 1.1.1 and Fafard mix and my plants are loving it..

I think if you know the very basics which I wish I had known from the start you can be pretty much successful with everything, including citrus..

You should know that Citrus hate wet root or mixes that take too long to dry out. A mix that quickly compacts or holds dissolved salts will kill your tree within a short period of time, usually through a winter..

Using a good mix that is porous, a fertilizer that provides Ca and Mg, providing lot's of sun during the growing season and properly introducing your trees to outside and then indoors will save you a lot of aggravation and loss of trees in pots..

Some here know what ratio fertilizers that citrus like best..I think its a 3 1 2 ..Someone can correct me on this..But I use Foliage Pro which seems to do the trick for all my trees.

One other thing, If you think you are doing everything you can do to provide what your trees need best and you still get yellowing leaves or poor growth, make sure you don't keep the roots too hot or too cold and or check your tap pH..

Mike thanks for the reply. So I did a lot of poking around on this site and narrowed down to these 3 major tips. 1-gritty mix, 2-foliage pro for fertilizer, 3-moisture meter. I have the FTP and meter. Cannot find turfsce locally. I have found the granite at tractor supply and a local fish store has the 24 quart bag of reptibark for $24.99 which is retail but I don't mind since they are a local store in my very small town. A nearby place told my mom that instead of turfsce they sell a product pro form red. Do you have an opinion on that?
