just saw our first Hummingbird of the year!

So I quickly made a batch of syrup and ran outside to set it up just before dark this evening. Now I cant wait for morning. Anyone else seeing any yet? I hope I remembered the recipe correctly, 1/2 c. sugar to 1 c. boiling water?

That's very sweet.....1/3 to 1/4 cup sugar to 1 cup water.

We've had hummers for a few weeks now. They are the biggest thrill in the garden!!

I've had them here in Carthage since the beginning of April. Since my penstemen have started blooming though I have not seen them for about a week. Adele

Sass - Where are you in Lakeland? I live here too and seeing an Allen's is very rare. I don't know if you know Joe M who lives in Christina but he had one a couple winters ago. Our area usually gets hummers starting around now as migrants and then those that come in Jan. or so stay through till about April. A few of us here in Lakeland have had banders come and band and id the birds as part of a 10 year study to see where they migrate to in the summer. If you are interested, please let me know and I can get in touch with one of them. Rufous are similiar to Allens, and friend and I both had one last winter. Please contact me through GW. I also posted about recording sightings through Audubon. I am not doubting your id of your bird, just really excited cause I know it is unsual for them to be here. I know it is something that should be documented. Congrats on your hummers!

OMG...that WAS alot of hummers!! How in the world did that guy get them to come to him and feed right out of his hand, especially in the beginning of the video? He wasn't holding anything that was red, or that appeared to be a feeder. I think I would have taken off running for shelter if all those hummers came flying at me LOL. That was a very good video, thanks!

I put up some of those red plastic cups that you buy and tied them to limbs on the tree. I had not seen any Hummingbirds for acouple of days. Today I saw two at the same time and then one for the rest of the day. It was a female and she tried all the feeders and then checked out all the flowers and set in the tree.

Saw another one today. Might've been the same one from yesterday since it was another female. A lot of the hummingbirds that come to my yard will stay here all year. They even made a nest in my backyard last year. If you want them to stick around a water source is needed. My neighbors have a bird bath so I don't need to do this. In addition to salvias I've also seen them on penstemon, monarda, and weigela. They like honeysuckle and agastache as well but I don't have any of these planted. I know there are many other flowers they like, but these are the ones they like the most in my yard. They've been known to arrive in our area as early as April, but usually the beginning/middle of May is when we start to see them.

I haven't seen any yet!! wahhh!!!

Usually they dance around my mandevilla and it is not blooming yet so that may be why. I think I'll fill my hummingbird feeder though.

I saw mine really early. April 4th. Now they are gone. I hate it when everything around us is in bloom and they stick with the invasive honeysuckle and the native jassamine and totally ignore my yard. They will be back and I'll enjoy them all day though.

We got the passers-through late March, early April. Then none for a week or two. The all-summer crowd are here now.

i've yet to see one here this spring ... the feeders are stocked and i've been awaiting the usual traffic jam around my hummingbird-magnet salvias - nary a one.

We had our first one April 1 (Clayton area) ... I think the early ones were still migrating North, because we wouldn't see any for a couple days. Now, we have them regularly at the feeders and all over the larkspur and salvia.
