The "Texas Sweet oranges" if low in seeds, are probably Marrs. If they are very seedy, then they are probably pineapples. It is my understanding that "Louisiana Sweets" are also pineapples. I was once on a dove hunting trip with a long past friend and citrus buyer. We were on his brothers place near Donna, TX as he pointed out the adjacent grove as the place of the original Marrs orange. Marrs is a bud sport (mutant) of a navel. Some Marrs oranges are reverting back to navels. Before you run out and buy a Marrs tree, be aware of the fact that the sweetness of Lower Rio Grande Valley citrus is due to the combination of local climate and the sour orange rootstock. On the upper Texas Coast, the Republic of Texas orange is sweetest I have seen. Those trees have been growing on the Caldwell Ranch in Brazoria county since before the Civil War. The oranges slightly resemble Parson Brown. Some tan-tangelos such as Page and Fairchild are sold as oranges. I have heard reports of Fairchild with 28% sugar. Last year my Pages were sweeter than my Fairchilds. The acid in tan-tangelos is higher than than round oranges so the sugar/acid balance gives a greater combo than pure Mandarins or pure round oranges. Ponkan (Chinese Honey Mandarin) is sometimes an exception to this general rule. You will find that growing citrus is similar to grapes. Some vintages are much better than others. Always plant what does best in your area. Larry

Yes, Honey is extreme, and known to be extreme. My Seedless Kishu has its first fruits this year, but every year at the UC Riverside Citrus Collection, their Kishus have been loaded. Same with Tango. Gold Nugget is probably the most likely of the three you mention to show some alternate bearing, mainly because, I think, the fruit will hang exceptionally well on the tree, so you might leave the fruit on and use it as needed. That can cause a tree to alternate bear. Pruning every season just a bit can help stimulate more fruit bearing branches, so that can stop the alternate bearing if you start to see that happening. Or, removing the fruit within a reasonable amount of time. Also, cultivars that tend to bear very heavily can alternate bear if not thinned. Page mandarin can do that, and even the illustrious Meyer lemon if you don't pick the fruit regularly (I forced mine into an alternate bearing state the first year I moved into my house due to the enormity of the amount of fruit on that tree). The satsumas tend to be more alternate bearing as well (sort of famous for it), also, but since you don't have any, no worries there. And, Valencia oranges also will alternate bear, again, because the fruit can hang on the tree for so long. Patty S.

Jan, that’s not 1/4 of the fruit that was on there before I trimmed it. I threw a bunch out because I don’t know what to do with it all except give it away. I think I'm going to purchase a Rio Red. I'd love a Duncan but they seem hard to get hands on unless one wishes to get a year old seedling from Florida. I really don't want buy from Florida as there is always the fear that tree may be infected with HLB. I haven't explored California nurseries yet for a Duncan, so that's my next step. Most likely what will happen is I'll purchase a Rio Red tree from Costco. I've really been impressed with their supplier, W&N, citrus trees and I know I like the taste of Rio Red in a desert environment (I've eaten some from Phoenix).
