Putting climbing nasturtiums with clematis?

Hi, I put in 4 clematis last summer on my fence and was wondering if this spring I could plant some nasturiums with them?

I don't think that should be an issue at all. I planted some sweet peas in a pot that I have an obelisk in and that will house several different clematis.

Nasturtiums are very attractive to black aphids - in fact they are often used as a companion plant in vegetable gardening to draw them away from the veggies. So don't be surprised if the intermingling of the two vines results in the intermingling of the aphids as well.

It depends which part of Pasadena you're in. Some places get more frost than others. In the milder parts, it will survive every Winter. But to be honest, nasturtiums look terrible after about a year, so I'd recommend something else, like a good passion vine. There are many different kinds and they grow very quickly. If you like fruit, look for passiflora edulis "Frederick", it's available at most nurseries.

Raising the canopy like cnetter is referring to is exactly the training I was referring to. There is a lot more decisions to be made before just simply whacking it down as you are suggesting. Your comments were that of landscape design, maybe it is planted there for more reasons such as a shade tree to conserve on energy bills? I just think sweetpea should really weigh out all the options before just simply taking it down. I'm all for planting trees to help out the environment as much as I can. Yes, I have taken down trees in my yard & for very good reason. I had a Norway Maple as my shade tree which is notorious for dropping it's leaves late. I was turning on my heat much quicker in fall because of it. I took it down & replaced it with something much better & now am saving $ on my electric bills. A few others that were diseased, yet replaced them with another tree & then some. Outside of what trees can do for our atmosphere, they also provide homes for critters & in this case food as well as other options for humans. "The ripe berries furnish an acidulous and astringent gargle for sore throats and inflamed tonsils. For their anti-scorbutic properties, they have been used in scurvy. The astringent infusion is used as a remedy in haemorrhoids and strangury. The fruit is a favourite food of birds. A delicious jelly is made from the berries, which is excellent with cold game or wild fowl, and a wholesome kind of perry or cider can also be made from them. In Northern Europe they are dried for flour, and when fermented yield a strong spirit. The Welsh used to brew an ale from the berries, the secret of which is now lost." Heck, we can even make beer...LOL! Now, on the other hand...right tree right place. I can not tell by the picture how far from the house it is. Another aspect that would bother me is the fruit. Bird doo on the sidewalk, fallen fruit the birds may not have eaten etc. I would live with it for a season before making any rash decisions.

Will Clematis climb a boxwood hedge?

Sure, it will climb your hedge. I am sure it would look very nice with the white flowers against the dark green hedge. I grow a lot of clematis up my cedar hedge without any problems. It will just need extra water. You will have to prune your hedge when the clematis is dormant. Are you getting this sunshine down there also? It feels so good after that miserably cold spring in the PNW. The sun is making my clematis bloom finally. Every day more and more clematis blooms are opening up. This is the latest they have ever bloomed. July is going to be great! Everything will be blooming at once. Karen Here's Huldine growing through a cedar hedge.

bboy, all I can say is 'Wow'- and 'thankyou' I just googled the images and they definitely would be gorgeous together. OMG, I love that rose and it would be stunning with Jackmanni. Okay, so that is my choice. That didn't take long did it? lol I need to know how many of each I should purchase come spring. So, can you please tell me how far apart I should plant them?

Hmmmmmmm. I guess I could just put my 2 climbing nasturium on the fencing post's for my 2 tomato patches.

Strange Pam as I have grown nasturtiums for quite a few years to put in salads and I have never had aphids on them. Aphids on other plants not even close to the nasturtiums, but never on the nasturtiums. Only shows what I have said time and time again, what works in one garden may or may not work in another and the only real way to know is to give it a try.

All I can say Miguel is that you've been very lucky, as nasturtiums are notorious for attracting this pest :-) In fact, if you do a search on "nasturtiums" in general, virtually every site will remark on this problem to some extent. Maybe it's your climate/location? And you're 100% correct - what works well in one garden may be a total disaster in another!

Gross is hardly an appropriate description Pam. Yuck!!! Believe me I get aphids on many things, including clematis seedlings that I have started but never the black ones--usually just the green colored ones or orange colored ones back when I grew the tropical milkweed ascelpsias curassavica. Don't know what it is, but knock wood, they have never been on the nasturtiums. Let's just hope this doesn't jinx me this year! LOL

wow, I've never had any bug on any nasturtium, ever - at any garden or location.

I had no idea they got bugs.

The only mildew I've ever had was on some short zinnia, and that was our fault as we watered late at night and it didn't have a chance to dry properly.
