Anyone Pruning Their Group 3's Yet?

Hi everyone,

Did anyone start pruning their clematis plants? Especially group 3's since the two I have are group 3: sweet autumn(planted last October) and Reiman. I think Jeanne said wait until the forsythia blooms. I'm thinking that's not far off since I saw new growth coming on my one lavender plant.

I hard prunned some of my 3's including my 6 year old sweet autumn this past Saturday and Sunday and cleaned up my some of my 2's. On Sunday we got up to 72, was nice. I'm not done yet since I have 20 plus to work on. I started one 30 gal trash can of Alfalfa Tea to ferterlize all mine in the next couple weeks. I used 2 cups of alfalfa feed pellets per 5 gals of water and then poured the buckets into the 30 gal trash can to work before I use it in a couple of weeks, I stir it up every day until I use it . Once I cut the 3's I made sure I covered them back up real good with mulch that I had already on them, but they are pretty hardy even if we get down to 25 or so. I usually have to cover someone up with blankets and its usually Asao, she already has buds almost 1/2 the size of my little finger and Jackmani has about 18 new shoots coming from the ground. Sandy

Mine are still under about 3 1/2 feet of snow . . . sigh. March is my month for zone envy.

I'm a confirmed rebel, gardengal :-) Nothing ventured, nothing gained... From your comments, it doesn't sound like there are any 'deal-breaker' concerns. I'm not concened about 'bare legs' because there is stuff under/near them to hide most of it. Root competition with other things will be an issue - I expect some of the clematises will not survive/thrive because of competition, and not great soil on the house side. I have over-planted (just finished that today) to start with on the assumption that there will be attrition in the ranks one way or another! Clematis seem to grow well here and I quite like the group 3s I have left unpruned - they actually seem to do better than if pruned. This is the arbour and gate that is at the front (facing the driveway) end of what will become the clematis swag. The Jackmanii Superba in the picture below picture had never been pruned and it was planted in 2002 or 2003! It certainly got pruned this past week when DH cleared the New Dawn roses - and everything else - off the arbour and swag: July 2 2010: July 12 2010: The back side - you can see some of the swag chains... They extend ~20' down each side of the alley, so there are 40' of chains plus 8' across the width of the arbour. My objective is to have that covered in cascades of clematis for as long as possible during the growing season. June 23 2010: July 12 2010: Here's another view of some unpruned group 3s on the other side of the house. The ones on the chainlink fence are 4 years old and have not been pruned other than to remve a bit of top growth in spring. The ones on the copper-pipe fence get accidently pruned - usually at the wrong time of year! - by the dogs when they are bouncing around, complaining about being left behind in the backyard when we go through the gate into the front yard! The group 1s are on planted to cover the top of the arbour and spill down the front to join the spring display in the gate area: So, I'm not terribly worried about unpruned group 3s clematis becoming too unsightly - and I like vigorous! :-)

Well, first a type 2 is much more likely to be a problem, wilt-wise, than a type 3 (Jackmanii is a type 3). Rosemoor might be a good choice, Ville de Lyon or E. Markham or Niobe are others. There is no real red yet for the LFH, but there are a few much more red in the texensis group, which are type 3's.

Zands, I agree that its not necessary to "Pug" any or all mango trees. I think "pugging" is only suggested for people that want to try and grow their trees "short and wide" trying to achive a shorter trunk...as opposed to letting nature take its course and letting the tree grow naturally. Pugging is best for people that grow in pots/containers or if they have a small yard and want to maintain a more Dwarf tree for easy protection from freeze and if the trees are short...an added bonus is much easier to pick the fruits. If you notice Harry's tree, it has a much taller trunk than what a "pugged" tree would have. But, it is definitely not necessary to "pug" mango trees at all. They will branch out on their own regardless if you pugged it or not. Main difference is it will grow much taller and will reach its maximum height. I pug mine basically because I want to keep my trees small and short so its easier to take care of.

Helooooo friends! Here’s my total failure in air layering: I don’t know why, but all 8 branches failed. I applied rooting hormones on cuts, wrapped them with sphagnum moss and coco coir, I kept media moist with some rooting hormones as well, and.... nothing. Nada. Not even one scrawny root! To stay on a positive note, I’m glad that I didn’t kill those branches. Well, I have to take it back... I killed them other way. When I tried to root them as a cuttings, lol. 90% of those crocked, and a few still hanging in there, but again, no roots or signs of new growth. I’m kinda blaming it on weather, our April and May was cooler than winter! So I’m thinking I should try it again when weather will be warmer. All this torture was done indoors, and I’m thinking of taking my cuttings outside at least during a day. Nights are still 48-51 here. Forgot to mention, some of them in perlite/coir mix, some in perlite. And one in water with root hormone. I did water them tho.... didn’t know till yesterday that cuttings needs to be in dry media. Ugh.... Probably will kill the rest of them soon, lol.

Mine would all have been done by now but we had an Arctic blast of snow and temps below 20*. Now it is pouring rain. Next sunny day over freezing they are getting the chop. I had warmer temps in January.

I took advantage of this early spring weather and pruned both plants. Reiman took a beating this winter as a few stems were broken but there's plenty of buds on it. Sweet autumn doesn't have any buds on it but the stems are still white and green. I hope they both make it and they flower. Funny thing is my Reiman bloomed in May of last year and that was it (first time it bloomed). That was the most complemented plant in the garden last year so you can see why I'm hoping for it to pull through.

I pruned all my 2's and 3's a week or so ago.

I did mine back in January. Got some new growth coming. Just had my first blooms this weekend - Asao and Ruby Glow. The first blooms are so close to the ground I decided to keep them in pots on my back patio so I could see them better. {{gwi:575506}}

Very pretty Julie.. I get more excited during Clematis time in the spring when they start budding out then I do at Christmas! Yesterday I got home and fed my critters and then had to spend about 35 or 40 minutes just going to each of mine and checking them out and yes I talk to them. I had to feed Jackmanii through his trellis to help him get the hang of going up.
