Put it in a mix with mostly (3/4) pumice, if you can get it (if not, perlite will do, but you may need to use rocks to hold your plant in the pot). Then do not water it for a few weeks and keep it warm. After 2-3 weeks, take it out of the soil again and look for the new yellow roots. If you see them, put the plant back in the soil and water it well once. If you don't see roots, feel the lower stem for softness. If soft and squishy anywhere, cut it off there, dip in rooting hormone, sit on shelf for a week, and try all over again. Any chance you can keep this plant outdoors? or does it rain all the time there?

Hi Janey, you might find it difficult to get pumice I cant find it here.. you can use perlite like lzrddr suggested.. you can pick it up from wilkinsons if you have one near you for £1.48

Or if a tesco is nearer you can get the tesco low dust lightweight cat litter and use that... its fired clay.

Hi Many thanks for you response. I am not sure if I can get pumice or perlite around here. Will try to visit a garden centre. When you say dip in rooting hormone and sit on shelf, do you mean put back in soil or leave roots exposed? Do you think it is because the soil was been waterlogged? Sorry for the daft questions but this is all new to me. I did think of putting it outside, but the weather here has been wet and stormy intermittently for over 3 weeks. I have been trying to dry the soil out. If we have our predicted ÂheatwaveÂ, should I put it outside for a while? Regards Janey

Yes, your Aloe can sit out of soil for months, as long as it's in a not-terribly-hot-or-cold, dry location, with some light. In fact, it will likely start growing those yellow roots that are an indication of healthy growth. There's an Aloe FAQ here at the Forum that may help you - check the link.

Jeff is right, It does need light to set roots, set it upside down, away from a draft until you see the roots, just set in on top of soil, use what ever mix that you plant your other succulet plants in. This plant will get large enough to fit a 5 gal container. It will have red good looking flowers, and it does help help heal wounds. No matter how long your question, at least you asked. Yes read the FAQ don't over water unless you have bright light. In the kitchen is the wrong place to locate it. It will get any grease thats in the arm, please remember where this plant natively grown. Do not use any peat moss in the mix. It will grow in sand mixed with gravel of any kind, it must drain rapidly. Do not water until you can see the roots. Hi Guys - me again.

I am still trying to save my Aloe Vera plant. It has been out of the pot now for some time. I have not really watered it since I last posted, therefore it has been a few months. It is still alive although the remaining leaves are losing colour - however has two new small leaves, so obviously still growing. I am not sure whether to try rooting powder as there are no roots but what looks like a cork and it is solid - no soft bits. Do I just cut off the bottom till I find some colour or life and then dip in powder? Sorry again for the daft questions. Regards Janey

You want to plant it on/slightly in a pot with a small amount of soil and mist it only, until it develops roots. Then you can repot it and grow it to your heart's content.

As you can infer, from Karen's comment at 21:48 and (perhaps) at the FAQ, in this case callouses are a good thing. When a plant cutting has calloused it's ready to be planted, but (once again) - don't water the soil (there's no need to as there are no roots yet) - just mist the plant. I should think that, with enough warmth and some sun, you'll have roots in two months. Bottom heat during the rooting process is beneficial, too.

Anyway, lots of luck on the plant - it should be fine.

We have an Aloe Vera plant that is about 20 yrs. old. It has outgrown it's pot and is ready to tip over. How do I cut this down and re-pot it. Tried to post a pix but I need to make the GB's smaller.

See my response above (with the link to the FAQ). You need to dig it out of the pot (assuming it's roots - you want to save those healthily yellow ones), not cut it, and carry on per FAQ.
