OT Hibiscus or rose of Sharon?

I need your help gang. I am pretty sure that it is a hardy hibiscus. Going to have tons of seeds. So I need to learn the names but I want to have the correct ones.

Hope you do not mind that I put it in here.

I just know that I will have the answer before I go throw a few postings ;-)

Good thing is that it can be ANYthing in that x mas box full of goodies. I do knit...so I hope someone from a COLD climate is my partner....you get SOCKS hahahahaha roflmao

a joke lol. But then..........my son works outside here in TX and those socks I made him keep his feet warm!

Just an fyi...Rose of Sharon do not come true if grown from seed. The only way to be assured of getting white ones are to either purchase them, or start them from cuttings from white ones. I had a double white but cut it down last year. It seemed the buds just went from being 'buds' that never really opened right to being ugly brown distorted faded blooms. I gave it several years to put on a nice show before I cut it down. I also have a single white one that grew from a seed, though the double white one never produced seeds and I didn't have any other white ones. Sue

Thanks for your research. I must admit that the one I saw actually had zone 5 written on it. Funny how they don't specify Canadian zone 5 or USDA, especially when so much stock sold here is shipped up from the states. Makes you wonder why they would bother to stock something like that at my local Canadian Tire, and Loblaws. I guess they haven't figured out the zone thing themselves. On the experimental side I have actually overwintered a Hibiscus Syriacus Blue Bird for about 10 years, but then one year at the height of 7 feet tall she died. I'm sure Blue Bird is a Canadian zone 6, possibly 7. Although I'm trying babies from the Blue Bird only one has overwintered two winters (so far) and so that is why I'm looking for a hibiscus that is more hardy in a purple, but with that kind of height. So, Lavender Chiffon likely isn't any more hardy than Blue Bird. I'll have to see how lucky I feel when I see it marked down. Mary

Rose of Sharon (H. syriacus) is a woody shrub, and quite hardy. These often have very fertile seeds and you can end up with a forest of seedlings coming up near their parents if you're not vigilent. Many folks don't like them due to this "weedy" aspect. There are much improved modern varieties available. I've been especially pleased with the hybrid 'Diana' that was a USDA release several years ago. No seeds and very large, flat white flowers and blooms 'til frost. It is easily started from cuttings during the late summer. The hardy herbaceous hibiscus is H. mosheutos or one of it's many hybrids and varieties. I'm not sure if any of this species can tolerate Z4-5 winters, even with a heavy mulch. The evergreen tropical hibiscus that you see in Florida, Hawai`i and other warm areas is H. sinensis. These will not tolerate cold.

Its old fashioned charm, hibiscus-like flowers and affordability make it a garden favorite. Rose of Sharon seeds are a bountiful food source for non-migratory birds during the winter, these bushes should be part of all habitat gardens. Seed collection is easy. Allow the flowers to fade, do not shear back or prune the bush after flowering. Seed pods are somewhat tear-shaped, fat and nearly an inch across, immature pods are medium green. When mature they turn dusty brown and split apart with a star shaped opening. Remove the mature pods and allow to dry for a few days to ease with seed removal. Several dried pods can be placed in a tightly lidded plastic container to be shaken, the rattling will loosen and release the seeds from the pods. Remove the empty pods and puff the chaff away to have clean seeds. The seeds themselves are reddish brown, flat discs, and a little more than a 1/4" across.

I thought so. I guess I can look it up in my book just to be sure when I share cuttings or seeds that people have the right name. hence....me having a picture trade list roflmao

MIke lol....Yes I love that one too. That is why I tried to root a lot from that one. But this one just did not want to root. All I got moslty is the light pink/purple double ROS ardens one. Even the light pink did not want to root easily. About the sock MIke...I keep that in mind. No wonder Kristy and I are getting along so great hahahahaha

hmm I just dug out something about the name of this shrub. Well I THINK, that a rose of Sharon falls under the more general species of Hibiscus? Could that be? I have 0 knowledge :-( But the old order for the rose of Sharon *Ardens*...now i have one name already :-) some 15 years ago says: Hibiscus.....rose of Sharon *Ardens* H. syriacus.
Ok I am going to fix that in the trade list.

They are all related, abutilons too. They are all in the Malvaceae family.

I just made lots of seed packets Deb. The TV, Internet and Telephone were out for over 2 hours. So basically I am good to go on that. Tomorrow is putting them together time.

Your burgundy clover is Oxalis regnellii (Purple Shamrock). There's a bunch of different oxalis. If you dig them up you should find lots of little bulbs. I grow that one and a variety called Iron Cross. The flowers are kind of insignificant, usually little pink or white blooms but the foliage is very pretty.
