Where can I buy citrus trees in Florida?

Hi

My son and his girlfriend just bought a house in Pensacola. One his favorite things while living in the NE was being able to eat apples right out of the yard. I would like to send then a citrus tree as a house warming present. Can anyone recommend a good place to buy citrus trees? To save on shipping the closer to Pensacola or at least the state of Florida the better it would be. Also are there any varieties or specific fruits that anyone would recommend. Any answer will be appreciated.

Sue, I don't know the laws..can you, living in Fl, buy trees from nurseries in Fl?

Suezq, there is an excellent nursery close by Pensacola. They have cold hardy citrus **and** apple/peach/pear/plum trees that do well in Florida.

I'm worried about buying a tree and finding it is impossible to dig a new hole due to the old roots. ==>>> ummm ... go dig a hole ... THEN GO BUY A PLANT ... just cut or ax out any dead roots ... or move your hole enough inches over ... to avoid any big roots .... starting the new hole about 3 feet away from the stump ... out to be about right ... personally.. i wouldn't go in the exact spot ... just too much work ... there is no rule.. you have to dig AFTER buying a plant ... ken ps: call miss dig about utilities if there is ANY chance of anything being under the ground ....

If its anything like my pepper plants (and it may not be, but they also like well drained soil) you can put them in pretty much anything, as long as you can control the amount of water that the plant is getting. As long as you don't get carried away and over water, most soils suffice. If you want best practice, it sounds like a well draining soil would be better. Not sure how hot it gets up there in N FL, but here in the Tampa area, its already quite hot. From my experience having a mulch (such as your shells perhaps?) down helps to protect the roots by insulating the soil from the heat. This will keep the soil cooler, and thus cause it to retain some water. As I said, I grow peppers, so whether that is a good thing or not, I'll let others answer :).

Where to buy Dwarf Citrus in Southwest Florida?

I have had very good luck with trees from Briteleaf citrus. There was a problem in the last few years with Flying Dragon rootstock & it is hard to come by right now. Briteleaf has some in progress, and they also have a new truely dwarfing rootstock called US 897. I ordered a Ponkan and a Meyer Lemon on the US 897 stock last fall, and they have done great this year. Very healthy trees. Both have formed a nice structure and are around 4-6' tall. I'd highly recommend the vendor. These have done much better than a Valencia Orange I bought from Jene's. Here's the Ponkan around July: Don't have a pic of the lemon handy. I'll second the Just Fruits & Exotics folks. I've bought from them many times and have always been satisfied. Don't go by what they say they do or do not have on their website. Better to phone them to get the most up to date info.

I live in South Alabama, only 1/2 hour from Pensacola and my parents live in Pensacola.

There are a number of good-sized nursery operations in town there, but I drive by a big one every time I go over. It is on Pine Forest Road, almost across the street from Five Flags Raceway. Check the local yellow pages for name and more.

Thank you all for your quick replies. ;) I remember why I lovethese forums, such nice people.
I was a little woried about the shipping across state lines thing that is why I thought I would send it from Florida.INstead of up here. Also I think I shall save a bundle on shipping. Mainly I want to make sure it will live.

Just remember, you will need to buy hardy varieties such as satsumas for the Pensacola area. About 25 years ago, even the satsumas were wiped out by the January 1982 cold wave and heavily damaged by the March 31, 1993 winter storm.
