Has anyone heard of any upcoming garden tours of private gardens for Spring in So. Cal???? I always seem to hear about the after the fact...

The Garden Conservancy has tours in the Los Angeles area in April of every year. They're wonderful!

Christine, we probably crossed paths -- wasn't it a gorgeous day? So many roses in bloom. I stayed until closing time at 5 and took lots of pictures. If I can figure out how to post them they may end up on the Roses Gallery here. Our Los Angeles Rose Society club met in the classroom, as we do every third Sunday (except July, August & Dec.). Also the San Fernando Rose Society was having the second day of their rose show in the hall. Roses everywhere! I saw that Yellow Lady Banks -- completely covered with blooms and thornless. It gets huge if you let it and doesn't repeat in fall, but I want it anyway! I met a lady in the garden named Amina who is a volunteer at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino, and she told me they have some special program there (ending next Sunday) about roses, focusing on the ones in Empress Josephine's garden at the Malmaison. I may try to go next Saturday.

Hi Sanda, Yes, we have 2 tours planned for next year - late spring and late summer. I like to give the hosts plenty of time to recover from winter and let whether warm up a bit. The actual homes/locations are still undetermined but there are quite a few we are considering. We still have a couple of fun events planned for this year. Sometime in late September we are planning to have a tropical arrt show at the nursery. Artisans of various mediums will be showing their works of art including scultures, oils on canvass, waterpaintings, etc. We are still open to more artists so feel free to pass the word along. The dates/details for all the events will be sent out to everyone on our mail list (sign up at www.tropicalvibe.com). I will try to post the events and details here but if I get to busy with our landscape design work and nursery operations I might forget. Happy to share these photos with everyone! Sydney Eddison's gardens are located in Newtown CT which is about 10 minutes from where I live. She is an active member in our community and is frequently found at local garden centers and clubs for lectures and book signings. I met Sydney at a couple of local events and actually had a chance to chat with her in person as she autographed my copy of ÂGardens to GoÂ. As Sue mentioned, she is really gracious and personable. At the tour, her next project was on display which is a pretty elaborate and comprehensive color wheel especially for gardeners. Apparently, it was not ready for sale but is due out in about 3 weeks. Dee Â good to hear from you too! Hope to see you at the fall swap. I was unable to make the spring swap but I am looking forward to seeing everyone in a few months. George Â I did not ask for the name of that cimicifuga but it looks like the same one I have in my garden which I actually picked up at one of our plant swaps a few years ago. I believe it was Deb (aka Cloud9) who gave me a generous piece of it; it has performed well in my garden and is blooming right now. I think it is the regular species of cimicifuga racemosa Â I can try to bring a piece to the next swap as it is quite a vigorous grower and bloom time starts in mid-summer. Sue Â Keen eye! The containers were modest in comparison to what I had expected after reading the Gardens to Go book. Nevertheless, her choice of colors, textures and shapes made it quite an interesting collection. Of course, it could have been my photography skills that made them less impressive ;). I must say it was a shame that the brugmansia was not in bloom yet; I would have loved to have seen that! Our yard was on the Mary Lou Heard Memorial Garden Tour two years ago - the last time it was held. I was called early in the year - this year- and told they were going to have the tour every two years...which means next year should be a tour. I've heard nothing so far and neither has anyone I know.

I also notice that the former webpage link to the Mary Lou Heard Memorial Garden Tour is no longer active. I thoroughly enjoyed those garden tours over the years.

I just learned that they are again planning the Mary Lou Heard Memorial Garden Tour for the first weekend in May. Nothing official has been put out yet nor has the website been put up. My information source came from Brita of Brita's Old Town Nursery in Seal Beach. So, come April you may wish to contact Brita at 562) 430-5019 to get an update.

Another tour I just learned about is the Sant Rosa Plateau (Murrieta area) Garden Tour on Saturday, April 29th. Seven garden estates and art exhibits at various locations. $15 per person. See link below

The Mary Lou Heard Memorial Garden Tour for 2006 will be held on Saturday, May 6th from 10 AM to 5 PM. It has been a big challenge for a very small group of dedicated gardeners to organize, so will all of you please spread the word? And note that this year the tour will only be one day, not two? Tour descriptions will be available for download on April 20th at: www.heardsgardentour.com. There is also a list of supporting nurseries that will have the "official" tour booklet as in the past. Our home is on the tour, and we have been helping out with the final pieces, but we came in very late in the process. To anyone who has shown their garden in the past, please think about doing so again? And encouraging gardeners you know to do the same? It is a real challenge to locate the gardens without Mary Lou to ferret us all out and prod us into showing. So y'all call your friends and come on down, y'hear?

Ooo...I have been HOPING that someone would post something about the Mary Lou tour soon!! I have been telling any one I can collar to pencil in the date so now I will go let them know it is happening for real!!
