I have two highland nepenthes: N. alata var. elongata and a N. truncata var. highland. Except for my alata that was in greenhouse, my truncata has been in my room since September of last year and just like. Both plants are in my room, low humidity but warm days and slightly cooler night, and both my neps seem to be doing just fine in my book shelf along with my pygmy sundews, D. paradoxa and a couple of terrestrial Utricularia. Like jonocross, I have my neps grown on regular commercial clamp lamps with bright fluorescent long-live bulbs that I purchased at a store. One thing I made sure was that the bulbÂs brightness is at least 2200 candle. During the day, inside my room is around 80 but during the night, the temp drops to 72 and thatÂs the average temp I keep in my house during summer and winter. So your best bet is growing them inside your house. If you can grow N. alata, which is usually a highland (but can also grow as an intermediate) and N. Miranda, an intermediate. You should be able to grow intermediate outside along with the lowlands. Other good intermediate you can start with are N. ventricosa, N. sibuyanensis, and N. ventrata (natural hybrid of ventricosa & alata). I consider these Neps to be easy plants to grow and gain further experience. Hope this helps. Cheers.

TnWren (Dawn), Sorry for the long time between posts, ... I was out of town. No offense taken at all. I have two reasons for having the knowledge I have concerning this subject. First, a very close buddy of mine works at our local Lowes hardware.... in the garden department. (He has confirmed the information I was told.) Also, I personally have one of the hybrids in my collection. As for your research on the web, if you will e-mail me I can forward you a few links that will confirm what I posted earlier. (I don't want to be rude to this website by posting links to other forums outright) Personally, I feel its VERY important to know what you actually have, .... review TonyP's posts as he too seems to understand the importance. If your wanting a "pure" species, it can be hell when dealing with uneducated growers. Further, if you'd like, I can attempt to post pictures of the two different pitchers for you? The bottom link? .... if you like it, and it works for you, Great! That's what's important. However, As a responsible grower you should know what you have so when the day comes that you share a cutting or two with friends, etc.

I'm not too far from you (San Antonio) and have to say that covering them may not have saved them either. I covered mine up at noon on sunday when I felt the cold breeze rolling in. The nighttime temperatures were still low enough to wilt the leaves badly. The plants looked really sad yesterday, although I didn't dare to open the cover and let the temperature drop in there. Today they look a little better, but I did see some dark green and wilted edges around some leaves. It really sucks.. I didn't expect this (even though, yes, the last average frost date is still 10 days away, I should have known better). My plants are quite a bit bigger already, though. I'd say about 25-30in tall. So I'm really, really hoping that I don't have to start all over.
