I thought grafting was best because it would help a plant provide fruit/flowers quicker, and help with diseases. But, if it's an older, established tree (would be hard to graft now), it should provide fruit. As mentioned by others, it will alternate bearing. For example, my Haas had tons of fruit two years ago, but this past year not as much. I'm looking forward to more fruit this year, not because I can eat it all, but because I can share with others, LOL! ricomeyer, does your fuerte have bloom right now? My Haas is in bloom right now so at some point, I will start seeing very tiny avocados forming, but it takes a while.

Hey Kate, According to ECHO, Page Mandarin does not need a pollinizer. The varieties that do are marked with an *. I bet your yard is smelling as good as mine is, with all those citrus bloomimg! Lisa Here is a link that might be useful: ECHO citrus info

too low for avocado, wait till about 60'F night time temps. not sure if Valencia needs pollinating. but i'd wait for night time temps above 50'F if there are blooms on it. if no blooms they can be outside in mid 30's protected from the wind.

joeinmo, I hear ya. I don't use roundup and avoid any plants labelled with Neotics. I've only seen a couple of honey bees this year but I've seen lots of bumblebees and/or their lookalikes. They chew threw a lot of my salvia flowers to get the nectar instead of pollinating them but that's ok with me. I think there's enough to go around. Do you have any favorite honey bee plants? I just got some butterfly weed for the Monarchs. This will be my first attempt at growing my own apples. A few of the leaves have spots but I think I'm just going to leave them be and see how they do next season. If I see any problems, I've read about copper sulfate as a natural solution. I'm sure my apple trees will be a slow and bumpy but interesting learning experience. Thanks!
