Finally, a Meyer Lemon! Follow -up to "finicky" Meyers

Picked my very first Meyer Lemon ever this morning, so excited I had to share! Never would have happened without help from the good people here! It was a 3-yr. Meyer from 4 Winds bought early last Spring, planted in gritty mix, watered with Foliage Pro at 1/4 tsp. per gallon every watering. I also used Pro-tekt at 1/4 tsp per watering. Added vinegar to the water to a PH of about 6.0, give or take. I let it grow 3 lemons - or more accurately, it allowed me to have 3 lemons; I've learned that the Meyer pretty much sets it's own course. Just wanted to say thanks!

I bought a variegated pink lemon at the same time, and thought the Meyer would give me a lot more trouble? Not at all... The Meyer, a kumquat, and a key lime transfered beautifully to gritty mix this year and I love them! But I'm on my 3rd variegated, because #1 died when I transferred it to gritty mix, followed by a 2nd try, same thing happened. The 3rd one has been in the original nursery pot and soil for 5 months, it's doing great. I'm afraid to put it in gritty mix, but at this point it needs a larger pot. It's actively growing and blooming right now, so I'll wait a little longer. I don't know if the variegated issue is coincidence or not. Are their roots more shallow?

It's true Mandarin! The Variegated are a bit more fussy than the regular ones.
I too left mine in the original potting mix for almost a year and finally transferred out of it last summer..lol
I was scared too. My first one died in the gritty too.

But, I don't attribute it to the mix since many have been successful at it. I just think it's the timing of doing it and one needs to make sure it's very healthy when you bare root.

I put my second one into the 5.1.1 mix and it's doing GREAT!
Have you thought of trying teh 5.1.1 mix at times too?

If I am not mistaken, I think Josh also has one that he transfererd into a gritty mix and it's doing terrific!

Mandarin~ Congrats on your first lemon! How nice!! Nothing like the satisfaction of home grown!!!

I think the only problem Josh has had was a Deer. Other than that, his tree has done very well in a gritty mix. :-)

CORRECTION: The mexican sweet lime- Citrus Aurantifolia - (also called key lime) WILL come true from seed because it is not a hybridized citrus. The improved lisbon and the honey murcott mandarin are hybrids and those two WILL NOT come true from seed.

1) Most citrus do best in "Mediterranean" climates, ie, Italy, California, etc. This means their optimal temperature is from 24 C to 30 C. But they will grow in a much wider range. The research I have seen says the minimum is about 12.5 C and max is around 39 C. SO, the 20 C should be fine, 10 C not so much. 2) Yep, citrus have been grown in pots for centuries. 3) In my experience sudden changes in any environmental conditions (light, temperature, or water) and the citrus rebel quite strongly with leaf drop and general pouting for weeks to come. It's best to slowly move them in doors or out doors over a period of several weeks; gradually increasing their exposure to the target environment. Even still I always get some leaf drop. 4) As long as you don't burn the leaves with super strong concentrations they don't seem to be that sensitive to sprays. 5) Citrus roots need plenty of oxygen and room to breathe. It's an absolute must that the soil dry slightly between waterings or the roots will rot. There is even a special soil mix many on this forum use to try and prevent over watering.

Some may have other information but I have always been comfortable eating fruit that was not fermented. Citrus has sections so the bird may have caused some damage to one or two sections but I'm guessing the damage goes little deeper than the rind. I say pick your first lemon, slice off just the skin at the deepest damaged place to better determine how deep the damage is and enjoy the rest! I also have bird problems with my Ponderosa lemons. Boat-tail grackles come in about this time of year and they don't peck holes in the peel but they scrape off the green zest. The lemons still fill out and mature but they are deformed because of the damage to the outter skin. I haven't found any ways to keep the grackles at bay.

Its perfectly safe. Neither does it harm blossoms or growing fruit. Just follow the directions, and don't spray when the plant is in direct sun or its over 90F. In evening is perfect.

Thanks Mike, it helps to know I'm not alone with the variegated lemon challenge! I think the 5:1:1 is lighter than gritty? I need lighter pots these days, just as you do ( I broke a knee and wrist in a car accident ). Yes, I'll try 5:1:1, but I'll probably check back in before I do!
Thanks JoJo, it's amazing to pick a lemon at all, but to do that inside when it's so cold outside? Ate a kumuat off the tree today while watching it snow out the window...it's ironic, and wonderful!

Hello! Mike, JoJo! Hey, Mandarin! :-)

Both Mike and JoJo are correct. I do have a variegated pink Lemon, I did re-pot in Gritty Mix,
and the only problem I've had was my fault...leaving it where the deer were able to get at it :-(

Now that it's indoors, it's blooming nicely. It is in a smaller terra cotta pot, though,
and so I have to water about every 4 - 5 days or else the leaves begin to curl. Spider Mites
are a constant issue with all of my Citrus, so I just spray them with Neem Oil + Pro-TeKt
every couple of weeks (or if I see any fine webbing appear).

I, too, left my pink Lemon in the nursery soil for its first season....but in November, we had
a cold-snap in the upper-20F's and my Citrus took some leaf-damage. I was very unhappy with the
idea of leaving the tree in the old soil for another Winter (I purchased in January and the tree
struggled those first months). Then we had a storm that knocked the tree over and loosened it in the pot -
so I figured it was time to re-pot, even though it was late in the season to be doing such a thing.

I really like the 5-1-1 for Citrus, although it does break down sooner than true Gritty Mix.

Encouraging news as my 3 yr old Meyer is about to be on its way from four winds (and I am not too far- climate wise from mandarin). What is the pro tekt for and how will I know if I need it?

i researched some more threads and found out about pro-tek. i will plan to buy some and use it.
