My new plants from California Carnivore

The pics below are my new plants of CP purchased almost a month ago when I visited California Carnivores. The two sarr I purchased that day are already dormant. But my two pygmy sundews and my tropical sundew and my nep are just doing fine.

This are the new addition to my collection

This was the only pitcher on my N. truncata highland. This variety is quite hairy.

And after a full month of growth, this is how it looks know.

The lids on both pitchers is such a very deep maroon color that it's black!

Top pygmy sundew is D. occidentalis ssp. occidentalis, the bottom pic is D. nitidula ssp. omissa.

This it the popluar D. burmanii, scape, and flower. ItÂll probably be dead soon as it is an annual but by then I hope I have plenty of seeds from it.

To my surprise, along with the pot my burmanii is growing in, it came along with two terrestrial bladderworts.

You can see U. bisquamata (Peter D'amato help me identify this one)and barely visible is U. pubescens. And below is U. bisquamata's flowers (to my surprise). Quite small as you can see compared to my finger.

Wow!! I've never been to this forum before but these pics just blow me away, hunterkiller! What amazing plants- love the sundews.

Hey there Hunter,
Thanx so much for purchasing your plants from California Carnivores.
As usual there are usually a couple of bonus plants included but Peter doesn't believe in hyping this as other sellers do.
Thanx for the gr8 pictures. I planted that N. truncata. Glad to see that it went to a good home.

Last September I visited by accident California Carnivores while visiting relatives in Santa Rosa, I had no plans at all visiting the nursery because I didnÂt know that Peter DÂAmatos greenhouse was nearby. No clue at all and my cousin who knew I collect CP failed to tell me about it and he new of Mr. DÂAmatosÂ nursery. Three times I passed by not realizing California Carnivores was there and I didnÂt see it until the last week. I think it was Tuesday or Wednesday when I finally discovered his greenhouse. I met Mr. DÂAmato and his assistant, he was gracious to let me tour around his greenhouse when he is closed to the public on Tuesday & Wednesday filling out orders. His collection is very extensive and impressive to say the least. His collection of Pinguiculas, Nepenthes, and Sarracenias and varieties, not to mention his collection of hybrids both Sarracenias and Nepenthes is astonishing and a sight to see! IÂm sure you will be more likely to purchase some more exotic species if they are available when you visit his nursery personally. I plan to drop by again hopefully on June or July. Some pics I took, unfortunetly I lost one of the small DVD with pics of Mr. DÂAmato and his assistant that day, along of my visit to the Monterey (I think its Monterey) Aquarium and the submerine USS Papanitos. Here are some of the best pics. This is my favorite, unidentified Nep hybrid enjoying his meal. Yumm!! And his collection of pings.

Oh, thanks a LOT Mitch!!!! NOW I want a terrarium... I just spent all this money on african violets, and then I had to get lights, and timers, etc., and then I got a few carnivorous plants that I just HAD to have and don't know how to take care of, and then I went an looked at your website and saw your terrariums, and I just 'happen' to have an unused 20 gal. aquarium sitting around, crying out for me to put plants in it... I will not spend more money... I WILL not spend more money... I will NOT spend more money... I will not SPEND more...well you get the idea. Not that I have any more to spend... :0( Sharon, who wants it all NOW!!!! P.S. That's a pretty cool website...even if it did make me drool!! S.

I accidentally burnt my Pinguicula by leaving it outside and frogetting to bring it in. Do you think there is any chance of revivng it? If so how? By the way I feed my Capensis some fruit flies but the leaf hasn't curled arount the fruit fly and its been two days now, is that natural? And for the seed pod do I have to crush it to get the seeds? My final question is how long does it take to grow a full mature Capensis from seed? Thanks in advance. -A new CP owner

I agree with tommyr above. Your sarracenia and Venus flytrap need dormancy. This is my first year with growing carnivorous plants too. I have all of my flytraps and sarracenia in the fridge right now. I pruned all dead growth and washed the roots clean of sediment, then I wrapped the roots in a wet, long fibered sphagnum/paper towel covering to keep them moist through the winter. Once they're trimmed and wrapped I put them in ziplock baggies with some sulfur based fungicide to keep mold from growing and now I wait. Unfortunately, if both your sarr and flytrap are as bad as you are describing they may not have enought stored energy to survive dormancy. Sarracenia and flytraps spend all summer storing energy in a type of bulb called a rhizome. Your plants sound very light deprived so they may not have enough energy to last all winter. If you do get them to make it through the winter immediately get though outside. Sarrs and flytraps love sunlight, the more they get the better. Your nepenthes is most likely fine. I have two, a N. Miranda and an N. Ventrata, they pitchered profusely in the summer but I'm the winter they don't receive enough light to produce strong pitchers. Most of the time light from a window isn't enough to induce pitchering in the winter. If you wver wanted to try, you could invest in some artificial lights to boost the sunlight they already recieve. I suggest searching the Internet for a good look at some peoples nepenthes setups. There are some really amazing ones out there. Also I hate to sound rude and I don't mean this in a condescending way, but sometimes a little research goes a long way. I figure that the seller who sold you your plants didn't tell you how to grow them properly, however that is no excuse as doing a little research would be extremely easy and take very little time. Great looking plants! Gee, I was given a batch of occidentalis last year and ironically, there was an accident with them. Someone knocked the comtainer to the ground and my rescue attempt failed.

I got the truncata for only $40! To me that's quite cheap, unlike the lowland truncata that you can easily buy less for $20 bucks. I've seen prices ranging between $100 and $70 for the highland variety on ebay and other nurseries that were offering it and usually they're offering small plants. So I felt like it was a bargain since it is quite a large plant with over 7 inch pitchers and for only $40 bucks... I couldn't pass the chance.

And petolaris, sorry for your loss. I also had experience the loss of plants due to pests like worms and mices, but the worst are other people. Never seem to keep their hands off them. I had a visiting aunt who clipped all my leucos thinking their were lilac flowers or something. She said that it would look nice in the kitchen on a vase.

ahh i want one.. but i really want a cephalotus :O

LOis, your sarracenia i owe you is already falling dorrmant. ill send it in early january along with other nice little plants, a few flytraps perhaps? :) take care
