Hi. I recently purchased 3 Agave. A. Filifera, A. Angustifolia Variegata and A. Stricta. I love Agave and would like to make these last. I live in the Midwest. Our summers are hot hot hot and our winters cold. I have them in terrecota pots. Right now they are south facing outside with partial shade from a tree. They are doing well right now. My fear is the winter dormancy. What conditions would I need to create to keep it alive and well over its slumber? And any other advice for their care would be much useful.

I can tell you what I do with my Agaves (miniatures in pots) in the winter - give them a sip of water every several weeks and the brightest sun that I can inside. Now, likes yours, they're outside enjoying the sun most directly. I've grown those others in the ground and they're great plants, but that was in San Diego and won't help you with your question, eh?

I have kept mine in the past, inside my basement in the dark for winter... only giving a "very little" water, if they started looking a little bit shriveled. This way it kept them from stretching for light or looking spindly. They always stayed a nice strong dark color that way.
But, I do not have to do that anymore, now that I have a greenhouse to keep them in during winter. Even in that, they get very little "if any" water till spring.

Agave americana (century plant) is a possibility., But so is A. scabra and several other species. Agaves are often very difficult to identify when young. Care: water when dry. Use very quick draining soil. Give it as much sun as possible. Practice benign neglect: leave it alone and it will thrive.

Do you know what species? Many agave are more cold hardy than one would expect, growing naturally in high mountain desert areas that can get darn cold in winter. What they don't like is our winter wet. If hardy, stashing somewhere out of the weather is suggested, like a covered porch or carport. If not hardy, then they need to be brought indoors or stored in areas that will reliably remain above their winter minimum temperature requirements. They need very little attention indoors during winter - indirect light is fine and a minimum of moisture. Just enough to keep them from drying out completely.

This is a large (6' - 8'), tender Agave that thrives in full desert sun. Not a good candidate for container life, IMHO.

J, in this condition after cutting of old dead roots and cleaning up the plant, I usually dip the whole plant in fungicide solution for a good while and dry it up. ( Using a fan will be faster) OR I dapped some cinnamon powder on the roots. Than repot in dry mixed. ( Make sure the pot is sanitize be for used) Dog, your white rino is amazing!!! I want one but is too expensive here a small pup with 3 leaves top to 100+ $. :(
