Agave care

Hi. I recently purchased 3 Agave. A. Filifera, A. Angustifolia Variegata and A. Stricta. I love Agave and would like to make these last. I live in the Midwest. Our summers are hot hot hot and our winters cold. I have them in terrecota pots. Right now they are south facing outside with partial shade from a tree. They are doing well right now. My fear is the winter dormancy. What conditions would I need to create to keep it alive and well over its slumber? And any other advice for their care would be much useful.

I can tell you what I do with my Agaves (miniatures in pots) in the winter - give them a sip of water every several weeks and the brightest sun that I can inside. Now, likes yours, they're outside enjoying the sun most directly. I've grown those others in the ground and they're great plants, but that was in San Diego and won't help you with your question, eh?

I have kept mine in the past, inside my basement in the dark for winter... only giving a "very little" water, if they started looking a little bit shriveled. This way it kept them from stretching for light or looking spindly. They always stayed a nice strong dark color that way.
But, I do not have to do that anymore, now that I have a greenhouse to keep them in during winter. Even in that, they get very little "if any" water till spring.

I have a two year old Agave desmettiana (purchased in a 5 gal. container) that is now 3-1/2 ft. tall and 3-1/2 ft. wide. It has many pups, which I'm letting grow for now. It was damaged during the January hard freeze, but is recovering nicely. It receives full sun until late afternoon. All my Agave are on 1 gal/hr emitters and get watered twice weekly for 45 minutes. They are all doing very well. I am in Phoenix, so you may need to provide a little less water in the Tucson area.

Hello Everyone... Cactusmcharris...yes, that is me behind that huge Agave!!! We were on vacation down on the Outer Banks fishing that day...I really didn't want to post a pic of myself...but I wanted to show the size of the Agave!!! "Great Hair day after boating all day!!!" LOL... I know you have many palms up in your area (Kamloops) : ) beacuase I have passed through your area several years ago on my way from Banff to Canum Lake near 100 mile house!!! Beautiful area...lots of snow, but missing the palms!!! If you ever get the urge to hug an Agave...make sure the points have been removed!!! LOL...or else you will have natural piercings all over...this is a plant that demands respect!!! That's why I had to give this "Mac Daddy" a small hug!!! It has to be the biggest one that I have ever seen growing close in my area... Hello Josh...That is one beauty of an Agave!!! You are very lucky to have a friend that would let you dig up a beauty like that!!! Great find!! You must have been thrilled!!! How is it doing now? Thanks for all of your help... Hi Mike!!! That AGave came from a friend of mine that is no longer here with us...so it is very special to me...I call it "My Jack Plant" A coworker of mine had it growing in PA and sent me a pup to grow...It has taken off and loves the climate here in VB. I really need to plant it in the ground because it is so root bound, but I am afraid of losing it...hopefully next spring I will plant it somewhere in my back yard...my son gets very tired of moving it around for me...like I said to catsusmcharris..you get pierced all the time!! This is a large (6' - 8'), tender Agave that thrives in full desert sun. Not a good candidate for container life, IMHO.
