I started growing passion vines about 10-15 years ago in the hopes of attracting Gulf Fritillary butterflies. In all this time I've seen exactly 1 GF cat but I did become obsessed with passifloras and have about 30 varieties. lol I keep the suberosa in the greenhouse over the winter. If I don't get fruit on my plants here there's plenty that grows wild in the yard in FL and it's ripe when I'm there over the winter. I pick the fruit when it's dark purple, almost black. Sometimes I'll squeeze the seeds out or I'll just allow the fruit to dry with the seeds still in it. Unlike the larger fruited varieties the suberosa fruit will dry completely and not get sticky. Ms Faith I agree with Susan that you likely have P. incarnata which is a much prettier plant then suberosa.

You can get them at 0.99 per 20 seeds on eBay, and their germination rate is supposed to be around 60%, and if you grow them correctly, you should have about that many of them germinate. They key is that they need to be planted around 2 inches deep so that the pill bugs don't eat the seeds. It also prevents them from sprouting too early in the spring. The best method that I've found after growing them for 3 years from seed is to put them directly into garden beds. If you plant them now, many of them should generate roots by around fall, and make sprouts for spring of the following year. If they don't sprout in 2013, some of them might take until 2014 as dormant seeds are a bit harder to germinate. Here is a link that might be useful: my tree peony seedlings

Hello Bruce I don't believe the size of the seed matters. It is the right conditions. Warmth, and humidity. I put my seeds in small plastic containers, and put them on top of the hot water heater. I picture lawyers drooooling over this,and it's a crying shame. Just keep them away from the pipes. They don't need light to germinate.(This applies to lawyers also): On another note I had some new seeds I bought last year (just one type). I only got 2 or three sprouts out of several seeds of this packet last year. I figured they were not very fertile, so I threw the rest of the packet in this year. Well I now have 29 Marrina's Peace sprouts. I guess the humidity is the only difference. I used the same water heater, same growing mixture. I guess I did use different tap water a year ago :
