Do you ever do this?
Comments (25)Weeds, are we talking weeds, Carol you can come visit anytime you like, you would be welcomed with open arms, you could pull away to your hearts content, I and my garden would be forever grateful. I remember going on a rose garden tour some years back, this was the most magnificent rose garden I have ever seen. The lawns were emerald green, the garden border edges looked like they had been cut with a sharp knife, the soil had been amended until it looked like black gold and of course the roses were outstanding, each rose on each bush was perfection. There was not one weed in this beautiful garden it was unbelievable. As I turned to step back into the car I spotted one lonely dandelion on the street side of the boulevard this brought a smile to my face, I thought to myself weeds, weeds, weeds, no matter how hard you try you can never totally get rid of them. Somehow this made me feel much better about my own garden and the ongoing battle of weed pulling. Do I pull other peoples weeds, no I've got too many of my own but ya know, never say never is my motto LOL. I had trouble previewing this message, garden web wasn't loading. This seems to be happening a lot lately, is anyone else running into this? Annette...See MoreDo you ever hire anyone to help in the garden?
Comments (42)FWIW, I'm holding my yearly maintanace contract in front of me. Here are excerpts from it, 'Contract starts at 03/15/2007 and ends on 12/15/07 and includes: -Spring Clean Up (definition blah-blah-blah will be done on a week of March 15), -Fine Lawns (mowing, trimming and bagging on a weekly basis), -Residue (paper and debris removal from the beds, walkways and driveway on a weekly basis), -Pruning (pruning of all shrubs and small trees will be done two times a year to maintain neat and manicured appearance with the use of mechanical trimmers. If hand pruning is required or requested it will be done at additional cost [I love this job and do it myself with a pleasure]), -Edging (will be done two times per year), -Weed control (all FOUNDATION beds [only] shall be kept free of weeds by use of cultivation), -Cutters (cleaning of all gutters will be done once in a late fall), -Fall Clean Up (definition blah-blah-blah...Leaves removal on a weekly basis. Leaves will be put in the woods. Final fall clean up will be done in December), -Extra costs (This contract does not include any materials unless specified. Any other work not described in this contract will be an additional cost. Labor charges for additional work are $35/hr per man. For fwork of more than 6 hrs, day rates will apply: $350 per day per man), -Cost (Cost per month: $400 plus tax for nine months)' Considering the size of my property and number of beds need to be edged, weeded and otherwise tended, I think I have a fairly good deal. The same crew of 3 man (all workers, no boss) coming to the property every Tuesday and spend between 50 to 55 minutes to perform all contractual tasks. From time to time, for the small cash fee they also do some things which is not in the contract such as moving some shrubs or rolling few rocks from one place to another etc. Of course, mulch itself and spreading it is an extra. All in all my yearly spending on maintanance amounts to about $5300-5500 if I not skeep on mulch....See MoreDo you work from a budget or wing it??
Comments (22)Lots of great insights, stories and laughs here-- thank you for the responses. My first mistake was: I started out with an arbitrary budget. I said "I'll dedicate this much money to projects". It wasn't really based on anything other than it was an amount that seemed reasonable for a series of unnamed projects. I knew generally what I wanted to do but I didn't have a solid plan. In the course of shopping, I got a few deals on better quality furniture-- I splurged on a sofa because I was able to find the EXACT style and color that I had had in my mind's eye for years. I knew it was a splurge but I also knew that I had seen nothing like it in many years of shopping. I splurged on a few other pieces--- but they were all things I could pass to a niece or nephew when they no longer work for me.. that's important to me since a lot of my furniture came from relatives. So now I think I will make a list of what else I need to do and then make a budget for those specific elements. I am also going to commit some time to going to flea markets and second hand stores. I have been so busy the last few years that I haven't been frequenting my old haunts. I need to make time for them. Johnatemp, I was thinking along the same lines re artwork and rugs. I do need to replace a few rugs but I am going to go the inexpensive route-- I have dogs and there are always kids visiting and while I love beautiful rugs it's not an investment I want to make. I appreciate art but it is something I like to add over time as I happen on the perfect pieces. In the meantime, I will use some of what I am not currently using, make some artwork myself, and scour ebay. I can and will add better pieces as I happen on them. I think too that I will make do with simple window treatments to start. I think the key for me is to be very purposeful from here on out. I don't believe I've spent money badly.. I just saw that I was on a track where I could easily just keep spending and spending .. and since I'd already blown the original budget, I was feeling full license to continue to do so. Thanks again for your thoughts and insights...See MoreDo you ever argue with your cabinets? (A request for color help)
Comments (47)What is it about bunnies?! They're just too cute. : ) Rebunky, I've been doing image searches galore, and I did not see that image. Thank you for posting it! I do like the black hood in that image. And the island. : ) We have the drawers for the cabinet under the cooktop, but DH had them removed when I took the photo. He's got the Eastlake piece framed already. He would have probably hung the hood and cover yesterday, but our countertops came in Tuesday afternoon, so he spent the whole day yesterday on getting those ready to install instead! I should have a working sink and cooktop today-hooray!!!! I don't know what type of glass door is coming in for our corner cabinet. Isn't that crazy? The guy that ordered them for us hasn't had any come in in our line of cabinets yet, and they weren't pictured in the catalog. So, we all get to be surprised. : P I picked up some (more) paint cards at the home stores a few nights ago. I was going to get sample pots of paint at Lowes or Home Depot, but Ace Hardware has got theirs on sale for $.99 this week, so I'll get them there instead. I've got a few blacks I'm looking at, as well as a dark bluish green, and a golden cream that I'm considering for the hutch. I wish you the best with your backsplash! I don't think that's an easy decision. We looked through wall tiles on our shopping trip, and very few "spoke" to us. I would definitely need to take lots of breaks and think about other people's kitchens in the decision making process, too. LOL...See Moretodancewithwolves
