Carnivorous plants need rescuing

Check out your local Home Depots and Lowes. They are both, at least in my area currently selling the little 3inch pots w/the plastic cup on top.

Have not seen any VFT, but have seen Sundews, Nephes, Butterworts and Pitchers.

Do the plants some justice and get them out of their current situations.

I am just getting into this particular fasinating plant world, usually hang out in the Passiflora forum.

Currently have 2 VFT, 1 Sundew (not sure which one yet) and 1 Sweet Pitcher (I think), only going by the labels on those little pots.

Have ordered a Sweet Pitcher grab bag from Cobraplant, expecting them next week and hoping to join their Plant of the month club.

Live in the Hi Desert of So. Calif. sunset 11, USDA 8.

Anyway go rescue these little guys, if your local stores have them yet.

I've been to home depot lately, but whenever i go it's too late. Sometimes i usually rescue VFTs. Home Depot usually Has Nepenthes hybrids(species not named) , Usually they sell drosera Adelae, or Rotundifolia(many clumps), The sweet pitcher plant is most likely a Sarracenia purpurea, which i've been wanting for a while.. i've never had any luck by rescuing any Sarracenia purpurea.. i would buy or trade with anyone who has one.. i don't mind if it's small, but it has to be currently growing(and pre-potted)All plants i trade are sent pre-potted, sometimes bare-root.. I have a couple of plants for trade.. anyone can feel free to e-mail me and i will give you my trading list.. i also have drosera capensis seeds.

I hear ya man!

Every time I go to Home Depot or Lowe's (or really any store with a garden center) I try to rescue at least one plant. The thing is, I don't have much room left :p It's always so sad to see them withering away...I would rescue them all if I could.

Speaking of Sarracenia Northwest's plant of the month club: I'm thinking about joining the Tropical Plant club. Seems like a cool idea!

I only scanned the comments above, so I might disagree on a point or two. I'll offer two very important things I think it takes to grow this plant well, and by 'well', I mean growing at close to the genetic potential built into the plant while keeping the plant attractive. You need to be cautious about the frequency with which you water, and you need to prevent the build-up of soluble salts in the soil. This plant is particularly reactive to high salt levels, and especially those compounds that form with fluorine. For that reason, it's wise to make your own soils that drain freely and eliminate perlite from those soils to eliminate a source of fluoride. (I can help if you're interested.) The soil should drain freely enough that when you water you can water copiously and flush the soil w/o any danger of root rot setting in. This should be done every time you water. Weak doses of fertilizer at frequent intervals are better than fertilizing at recommended rates and intervals. Your spider plant actually doesn't PREFER being root-bound. Like any plant, it will do exceedingly well in a very large container if the soil is fast enough. The plant in the picture would grow like crazzzy in a 10 gallon container, if the soil was made of particles large enough to guarantee the soil would hold no perched water (no saturated layer of soil at the container's bottom). Growth is measured by the increase of a plant's biomass, and I can't think of a single plant that does 'better' in cramped quarters. Before getting excited ;o) consider that because we might grow plants tight to bend them to our will, and because we see the results WE desire from the practice (e.g. some plants bloom better when grown under the stress of tight roots) doesn't mean that from the plant's perspective it's a good thing. The plant would prefer to have plenty of room for its roots to grow so it can maximize its mass - just like in nature. If tight little cramped quarters were best for plants, that's where Mother Nature would grow them. I wanted a 'hot car', so I set it afire. Well yeah, you accomplished THAT goal and got what you wanted, but that doesn't mean it was the best choice for the car. ;o) So to sumarize: * Get your watering procedure down pat - don't over-water * Always fertilize and water with an eye toward maintaining the soluble salts level in the soil at the lowest level that will prevent deficiencies. * Provide good light and favorable temperatures. That's okay, that's what this forum's for, to learn and help others. You can use pollen on the same flower to pollinate. That'll work perfectly fine. The stamen are the thinner ones that surround the thicker one in the center, which is the pistil. Just dust the tips of the stamen over the tip of the pistil, once the tip of it opens up and looks fluffy. If they get pollinated, the petals will curl up. If the flower wasn't pollinated, I think it'll die back. But if it did, then the center of the flower will begin to swell up. You'll know they're ripe when the seed pod cracks open, just like it shows in the last pic of the diagram I first posted. I'm not entirely sure how long it takes tho. Since mine are outside, I think that some bugs have been helping to pollinate my flytraps' flowers, HaHa. I say that because I've seen bugs on the flowers, and I see pollen all over the flowers as if something has been crawling all over them. If you do get some seeds, the best time to plant them is as soon as possible, while they're still fresh. They *don't* need to be refrigerated or anything. Just sprinkle them on top of the soil and keep them watered and covered with clear plastic, so they don't dry out. Baby flytraps don't get very big at first, so you don't have to worry about them growing close together. I have a spare self-watering pot ready and waiting. I use a 50% peat moss/50% silica sand blend, with a very thin layer of silica sand sprinkled on top. I don't use sphagnum moss for this pot.

There are a variety of approaches to dormancy. Ideally, if your area is cold enough without being too cold, outside would be best. Some of us live in the South and getting temps cold enough is an issue. So many folks use a fridge. For us in the North, the plants would freeze to death outside. So many of us use attics, garages, heavy mulching outside, and fridges. When my collection was small I had my 2 VFT's in the butter keeper. When we moved to a home with an upper and lower, with attic, I used the attic. it was cold enough, here in Western NY, to be in an unheated attic, but the heat from the 2nd floor kept it from being as cold as the outside. For a couple years I had to farm my collection to a co-worker's garage. This year I will be borrowing space from a wholesle greenhouse. One thing an attic with window does, though, is provide the cues for the plants to break dormancy, since they will respond to the increased daylength of mid-late winter. Light isn't necessary but it's more natural for breaking dormancy.

I rescue from Walmart, i bought my first VFT and my first sundew and pitcher plant from their, well i wish they sold neps hear.. *sigh* i want save some i so would! Its not fair! lol sry Sheldon that they dont sell n e their!

Ive heard many HomeDepots sell Neps, does yours mabey?
We dont seem to get anything here, only place I get is online from places like COOKS, COBRAPLANT or CALIFORNIACARNIVORES.

LOL our version of these stores in Britain is Homebase and B&Q. Homebase has like 50 VFTs at the mo that are all dying horribly - I rescued two a while back but I just don't have the budget to save anymore. :(

It's funny that this topic resurfaced since I rescued a Spoonleaf Sundew and a Nepenthes today at one of my local Home Depots. I'm sure they feel loved :)

Hi all,
Im new to the garden web, Ive been looking around for an interesting carnivorous plant to replace the vft I currently have growing in my terrarium, Ive been told that the vft needs to go into a dormant state for the winter, I really dont mind doing that but I also do not want to disturb the other terrarium plants, so I would need a tropical carnivorous plant, something that will not grow more than eight, maybe ten inches, a pitcher, sundew or just about any type that would do good and look interesting in the terrarium, if anyone knows of a plant I might be interested in please reply or feel free to e-mail me, thanks you guys so much! I love this site! =^)-

Well if you want hardy, easy to grow plants here are some of my favorites.
Asian Pitcher: N. Ventricosa, N. Sanguinea
Sundew: D. Capensis (broad leaf giant, red, alba or typical)
Rosette Sundew: D. Aliciae

These are some of the extreme plants Ive grown, they are very very tough and recover well if you dont give them exactly what they want.
All of them also adapt very well to various humidity levels.

I second all of what Sheldon said, but I'll add a few:

-Drosera spatulata (Spoonleaf Sundew)
-Drosera adelae (Lance-Leaf Sundew)

I've grown these guys for a long time without ANY problems, and I'm sure they'll grow just as easy for you. Plus they both spread like mad via their roots, so you'll never be without new plants!

This summer I rescued a Nepenthes (ventricosa), D. Adelea, VFT (D.Muscipula) and a Ping. from Home Depot at $4.99 a piece. Supposedly there is a new shipment arriving at Lowes today, should be on the shelf by Wednesday.

They are sad little plants sitting in Home Depot, but could it be that the more we rescue/purchase the more they will order them as good sellers? Heck, our Walgreens drug store had VFTs for sale.

Ours recently brought in a shipment that contained VFT's, S. purpurea, and D. intermedia. I have the good fortune to be a p/t cashier, there, and wrote up a basic caresheet. Also, one of the guys in Garden has been showing interest in CP's and has helped by keeping them outside, uncovered (open tray method), and watered with rain. They're doing pretty well... for once!
