Privacy Hedge/Tree

Any thoughts?

I have a unique challenge. Our neighbors just built an office on top of his detached garage. The windows of his new office look out directly on our backyard and pool. There is currently a 6 ft stone/brick fence separating the properties. We would like to put up a hedge or tree privacy screen along the fence line. The hedges/trees would need to stand 10 - 15 ft +/-. The problem is, the distance from our pool to the stone fence is only about 10ft and is all concrete; so any hedge or tree planted would need to go in a planter of some kind.

Any thoughts on a tree or hedge that could grow to the height we would like, and survive in an above ground planter?

There have been several threads on this very subject recently. If you search this forum with the keywork "privacy", that will bring up 55 different threads on the subject. Also there's some suggestions in the FAQ.

Photinia, Prunus caroliniana or Prunus ilicifolia, Privit, etc, etc.

Does Hop bush (Dodonea viscosa) grow in that area? It can be trimmed or sheared into a hedge, grows quickly and is drought tolerant when established. Deep green color, dense growth and if you water it well it grows really fast.

Wax myrtle could be a good option in your area if soil is neutral or acidic. Many culinary/(folk?) medicinal uses and I don't recall hearing of any toxicity issues for children or pets. Nursery person should be able to confirm. Loropetalum is another that might work. Most of the newer named cultivars will be smaller than what you're looking for. But the unnamed varieties found at the big box stores can usually make a large shrub or small tree. Major ice storms can be hard on these, but are pretty good about recovering.

Go to the desert botanical garden in Phoenix (assuming its still open) and do some looking. That place really opened my eyes and made me realize living in Arizona or Nevada could be horticulurally satisfying. Botanical gardens are similar but better than singles bars. If you see something you like and you can't take that one home, you can get one or three younger duplicates of it from the store later. Be wary of water problems, trees want more and more water every year. My ignorant Midwestern guess is a staggered row of different height palms. They won't BLOCK the view entirely but will provide a break and might not get hacked by the power company.
