Little green worms

They have struck overnight and seem to be on every plant in the yard. Did anyone find any way to get rid of them other than squishing? My plants look like swiss cheese and after doing only 3 plants I'm worn out.

A fairly safe method is Bt but it takes a few days to work so they'll continue eating until they die.

Kristy, If I just had a penny for every worm I had squished, I would be a rich woman ! I don't know a quick fix, wish I did. Edna

I'd be willing to bet that you're azaleas are being devoured by the Azalea Sawfly larvae, a caterpillar-looking insect capable of doing quite a bit of damage. They didn't appear overnight, but we often don't find these darned little things until the damage to the azalea attracts our eye. Which is what happened to you. As long as your insecticidal soap applications hit the sawfly larvae directly, it's a worthwhile control. Even sharp streams of water can dislodge them, making them more vulnerable to their predators. Of course, hand removal is an option, as well. Time will tell if your plants will refoliate. Some woody trees and shrubs will recover over the season. But even if the azaleas continue to look munched on, they should eventually be fine. Next year, keep your eye out for them EARLY! They hide along the veins of the leaves. Watch out for darker colored sawflies that feed on the flowers.

I never heard about that warms in the fig. I know that fig trees are immune to insects and infections except may be rust. I had some rust on one tree and I took care of it by spraying copper. May be it is Larva of fig wasp. I am not sure. Fig wasp does live in my climate ant way.

Use BT. It's a bacterial (i.e. not a chemical) and harmless to all other organisms other than worms/caterpillars.

Dang, last time I looked for BT I couldn't find any. Guess I will be sweet talking hubby into a trip to Killeen this weekend sometime. Until then I will squish away. John hates when I pull off leaves. He thinks it hurts the plants, lol.

The have drove me crazy this year and I sure know how you feel with the swiss cheese leaves. Those green worms do make a very satisfying crunch when you step on them, tho, don't they? :o)

I hate crushing anything and my stomache turns. But THOSE s..... when I find them and right now they apeared again just knowing they are back by looking at the swiss cheese that is not in my fridge, which I love but not on the plants. I even take the whole leave off and squish them. Can not bring myself to touch them even with cloves lol.
Do I have a problem? :-)

They were having a ball on the most tender leaves of my
Shredded White and P&C...almost overnight on the P&C. I
could have cried! I mixed a tiny bit of week Sevin solution
and...no more problem. This was three weeks ago.
I removed the worst looking leaves and the plants are as
pretty as ever. I spray periodacally this way because it
only takes a few to do a LOT of damage.

I only have the powder form. Will that work if I sprinkle it in the pot or do you have to get it on the leaves? I can't touch them either. I snap of the leaves and squish the whole thing, lol. John took over because he couldn't bare to watch me take off the leaves. I cleaned up some while he was gone this morning, lol. I got a tiny sprinkle of rain for about 2 seconds earlier but there is another band coming. Come on rain! You cann dooo eeet, lol! If this one splits right before it gets here I am gonna throw a fit, lol.

I am so desperately waiting for rain that I am not really in a happy mood. But you sure made me laught Kristy.
Call me when and if we have to throw a fit....I come over...we go to that unfriendly dog hating neighbor of yours and throw the fit together lol

I am getting those dumb green worms as well. Every time I think I got them all, next day I find new holes on the leaves. I dusted my double white with Sevin. I've been so busy lately that I haven't noticed if it worked or not. That one plant looks horrible.

Lol, Lucy. I guess we are gonna have to commence the fit throwing. Still no rain. I got some BT and sticker spreader to spray with since I noticed some stupid bag worms in the tree today out back as well. I hate those things.
