Pruning Citrus now, too heavy, too early? (pics)

Well, looks like my mandarin is going to be giving a ton of fruit this winter. The problem is that the tree looks like its going to break. The fruit is heavy on the thin branches, and the tree looks like it starting to bend everywhere.

The question is, now that the fruit are green & developing, is it okay to trim it with the fruit? If my only problem is that I wont get much fruit, then I can deal with it. But if this may damage the tree, I'd like to know. I've heard that it is best to wait til spring, but in our climate I think pruning is okay.

Basically, I'd like to clear the area around it so my daughter can go under it as she has before. When I bought this house almsot 5 years ago, it was a bush. I slowly pruned it upward into a tree, and lost a year or so of fruit production.

So once again, what is your best advice? I would like to just chop around it and help alleviate the weight problem plus clear the area around it to make more of my small backyard.

thanks!
