Lowe's Nepenthes pitchering!

OK, so I'm a first-time CP owner. This is a thrill for me. My little nep that I got from Lowe's is pitchering for the first time! They're only about 1/2 an inch long, but they are pitchers! Three of them so far. I'm so excited! Has anyone gotten a nep that seems to be in a cork-like medium? This is the only way I can think to describe it. The soil is all stuck together, and I fear the distilled water can't get to the roots. So I soak it in distilled water about once a week and mist the soil heavily every other day in between. I can't see how I can repot it because I would hurt the roots when attempting to get the medium off. I don't want to kill this little guy. What should I do?

Congratulations! I know the feeling I had when I had my first Nep pitcher-it's great :) As for the repotting problem, I'm not too good with that kind of info, but I'm sure someone will follow me and give you some good advice.

Ye my lill baby (Ventricosa) is pushing out a new pitcher and is growing very fast suddenly, its quite exiting to see it develop, just wish I could find the blasted camera now, things gone missing again!!

Asian pitcher plants are essentially equatorial, meaning they need roughly 12 hour photoperiods. Mine are at a window sill and they stop pitchering from mid-November until about now. When the photoperiod increases enough to their liking, they will resume pitchering.

Dried up Nepenthes miranda Pitchers

I've had my Nepenthes Miranda for about 3 months and grew some new pitchers. The pitchers all started to dry up about two weeks ago--I transplanted it to a bigger pot--and the leaves spread out and look very green and (I think) happy. It's getting cold here in NY and the heat sometimes comes on.I spray it daily, if not twice. It is also hanging with many other plants, including ferns which are kept in trays of stones and water, so I think the atmosphere should be damp enough.Does it need to be fertilized- and if so how? Is African Violet fertilizer OK? What else can I do to get it through the winter (indoors of course) and to get it to blossom again? Thanks

Many nepenthes are quite tolerant of cold (but never of freezing). I had my nepenthes lady luck outdoors in a fish bowl covered loosely with saran wrap all summer in Seattle (where it routinely goes into the 50s each night) and it was thriving. They key to it growing good traps is to have plenty of humidity, but without letting the roots of the plant get too wet. So I keep mine in a separate pot inside the fishbowl. The pot is elevated on some rocks so that it is above the half inch of water in the bottom of the bowl. I water it with rain water or distilled and I feed it dried blood worms from the pet shop every 1-4 weeks. Almost all the traps you see on the plant in the photo are ones it grew this summer.

You can re-pot and add more peat moss to the mix. Standard mix is 50:50 peat moss and perlite, try using 2 parts peat moss and 1 part perlite.

Hello ! my nep is pitchering also , it has sent up two more leaves and has 5 pitchers developing right now . mine is a nepenthes ventricosa that i bought online from Lee's Tropicals , It is a good feeling ...

Ye I know all to well :), its a beutiful plant, I just love it.
It has adapted very very well to the low desert humidity here, in fact I never even hardened it off.
Its now producing a nice sized pitcher filled with its digestive juices.
