YES!

Native treefrogs, being nocturnal generally do not pose much of a threat to butterflies, but small moths may be predated. I have seen leopard frogs and anoles take butterflies as prey on several occasions.

What type of lizards do you have?

I don't know the proper name, but they are your garden variety green lizards, and we have them all over. I don't know why they would be up on my fruit feeder if they weren't after my butterflies, except maybe to nab the fruit flies?

Did you know that frogs in your garden and yard area mean that you have a well balanced eco system? That's right. So be glad that you have frogs, for one reason or another.

I see that you live in zone 8b. Here in extreme S.E. Louisiana, I have both lizards, gecko's, frogs and snakes.

Well, I live on a creek here in central texas, so I suppose that comes with the territory. I do enjoy all the creatures, but I've worked so hard to attract the butterflies, that I hate to see them eaten. I guess I'll just let nature take it's course...

I've got jillions of those little green lizards, too - anoles - and I've only seen them eat a caterpillar once, and that was a cutworm. They eat lots of hard-bodied insects here. The manuals that they sell in pet stores list various hard insects as their preferred food, with caterpillars rarely eaten, so I think if you have a healthy ecosystem, they won't eat your cats.
I've never seen a frog eat a butterfly or caterpillar either, just bugs, so if they eat any, it can't be often.
In my area, the biggest predators on caterpillars are wasps and stinkbugs, and about the only predators on adult butterflies are mantids and spiders, but, again, these attacks are rare.
For whatever reason, in my area this year the wasps have been fewer in number than in years past, but the stinkbugs have been everywhere!

Thanks for the reassurance. I also have a mantid problem, or blessing as most would say. I've had to remove at least 10 so far, as they're eating all my butterflies. I also have a big problem with soldier bugs, but I got some thick rubber gloves, and go squishing. I've seen the immature ones gang up on my big GF cats, and kill them. Usually when they congregate, and I try to squish them, they immediately fall to the ground and run away. So now, I take a bucket of water with me, place it under them, and they all fall into it. It works great, and kills them great numbers. Anyway, thanks for alleviating my worries, I quite enjoy both the lizards, and tree frogs.

I personally don't think that the frogs are a problem but I can assure you that the lizards eat the butters. I have gone as far as to pull one out of their mouth, but the butter was so severely injured that it didn;t make it. I too have plently of them along with all the other critters you mentioned. They camo themselves to the color of the leaf and wait just below the flower head and then pounce quickly, the poor butter doesn't know what hit him. But this is nature, at it's finest, i suppose - so we just have to live with it----Butterflutter

So maybe you should catch one of the lizards and start feeding it the soldier bugs and mantids...

I also have tons of Anoles, Geckos, Toads, Frogs, Spiders, Wasps, Bees, and even the occasional Turtle, Snake, Armadillo, Possum, etc. I also have tons of Butterflies and Hummingbirds which I love to observe. As a previous poster said, your ecosystem is balanced if you have predators as well as prey. I attribute it to the fact that I don't use chemicals also. Enjoy nature and let it be!

I don't know why I didn't mention this - senior moment? - but one of the most common hard insects that anoles eat is small stinkbugs. For that reason alone, they're worth having around.

Thanks all for the great advice. I can't stand the stink bugs, which I know definately kill my cats, and the lizards are kind of cute, so I guess they can stay!!
