An idle question

I'm just wondering, aside from carnivores, what sort of plants do others in the forum grow?

Since I asked, I'll answer first. One the hillside behind my apartment, I've planted a bunch of succulents and cacti, native and exotic, as well as hardy terrestrial bromeliads. I'm trying to get Dudleyas established back there, many native to this region or Baja.

I also like South African or Madagascan plants, like Pachypodium and Lithops. I'm trying to grow Pseudolithos but they're hard to keep alive. I've got a fair-sized selection of epiphytes to keep my Nepenthes company, including cacti and Tillandsias. I have a few caudiciform "fat plants" as well.

To keep the women in the house happy, I have a handful of orchids and a small planter of purple petunias and lavender.

I'm trying to get some drought-tolerant wildflowers growing in my succulent garden as well.

I've been trying to grow berries -- Raspberries, Blackberries, Black Currants, Gooseberries, and Grapes. My ex-roommates bought 2 dogs (and promptly let them go feral) which destroyed a few hundred bucks worth of berry bushes, though, so...

I moved to an apartment after that mess and have been growing a few spider plants, a Mandarin Orange tree that I accidentally started (stupid seed actually survived, wtf!) and have been trying to keep going, etc etc. I might try a Bonsai again now that I have a good grow light setup going, not sure.

McC: Sorry to hear about the berry bushes, that sucks!

The orange tree might be easier than you think. I started one from seed years ago and it soon got bigger than I could manage. Often those citrus seeds will produce a plant that has thorns. In some cases, I've been told, the thorns fall off when the tree reaches maturity, in other cases not.

Thanks for the ideas, Alice. The main motivation for this is that I have gallons of vermicompost I don't really have much use for ;) I also want to document the performance of seedlings in vermicompost because I frequently see claims being made that vermicompost is 'magic' and therefore works well in container situations even though it's particle size after being wet for any length of time approaches that of clay. I am using Marigolds primarily because they are reputed to do well in both damp and dry soils and I have a zillion seeds. Not trying to do anything particularly large scale or even all that scientific, just 2 flats with different starting ingredients :)

TPS/idle question for someone in the know

"My '87 corvette idles a touch to slow for my taste, though it is to spec." I don't have my laptop at home which has my Mitchell On demand program loaded on it. So I don't know if there was an updated prom for your car to increase the idle speed or not. "A common complaint of those cars from about '85 - '92 or so. It is not adjustable short of finding some computer chip techie type to reprogram the prom." That is the only correct way to increase the idle speed, by changing the prom, if one is available. " I see in one of my car catologues they sell an adjustable TPS for my car. The stock one is not. Do you think I could run the idle up 50 rpms or so this way?" No. The computer learns the lowest TPS voltage that it sees as a closed throttle idle position, on each restart of the engine. That's why it is not adjustable, and does not require any adjustment. Now if the prom is changed, that can be engineered out, possibly making use of an adjustable TPS. " Would there be some kind of unintended consequenses if I tried? " Sure could. You could get EGR when it's not supposed to be turned on. You could also have problems with the Torque Convertor Clutch in an automatic not disengaging when you are in a deceleration. Trying to trick the computer into thinking you are not at idle, when you really are will simply confuse the system.

AOL idle timer question

This might be occuring if your computer is going into suspend (sleep) mode since you are not using it for awhile . I have noticed this occurs now when using AOL and not signing off. I guess you could change your power saving options so that everything remains on when you are idle. As I leave mine on all the time, I have it set to "sleep" if I am idle for 20 mins.

Randy, thanks for your reply. I understand about the weight pulling the hose back into place. The Youtube video explained all of that. In fact, after I turned the hot and cold off, I had to remove the weight from the old hose, then unclip the hose so I could pull it up and out the front end. Then I removed the faucet head, reattached the new hose and reversed what I had just done. Once I got up and over the high arc, I did meet obstructions. The hose definitely had no kinks in it. The only thing that worked was me gently swinging the faucet back and forth as I nudged the hose through. Finally it moved through and came down under the sink. There are two other hoses down there. Are they for the dishwasher?

Well, I'm hoping it does well, but I'm in Zone 5 or Zone 6 (Southern Idaho near Boise) so... it's going to be a challenge growing it when I can't take it out in the sun.
