Cephalotus WANTED!

hi forum,

to anyone who would like to trade.. or sell for a cephalotus follicularis(australian pitcher plant) i can accept small plants.. divisions.. anything, i lost my cephalotus a while ago(due to an accident) but my plant we very very healthy but some one knocked it down my window.. so i have no cephalotus no more.

I can buy...

Hi Xymox,
I'm trying to propagate 4 from the leaf pullings off my cephalotus. I don't see definitive signs of success yet, but the leaves have not died and they have been pulled off for about a month. I'm sure you're looking for something bigger though...but if we want really really small; let me know! ;)

thanks for the reply :)

to me, if the plant is tiny, i do not mind.
it's actually more fun seeing a tiny cephalotus plant growing, rather than having a full growned one.

cephalotus cuttings take a while for them to sprout.
please let me know whenever they sprout into plantets.

i will love purchasing one from you. thank you.

From my experience, humidity doesn't matter at all. I grew mine in summer with~20% humidity and it did fine; you just have to keep the roots moist. Cephalotus come from arid coastal areas of western Australia, so they are naturally adapted to dry conditions.

first thing u need to know is not to do nothing untill it has produced several crowns and it is winter. the best thing to do is just tear them as that will damage fewer cells then cutting. if u have to cut use a sharp knife and cut as cleanly as possible. pot up the divisions and keep them bright and humid wile they heal. u might also wanna take the oppertunity to take some root cuttings. just trim some off and lay them on 1/1 sand/peat or milled or longfiber spagnum and cover with about half an inch of it. cover the container with some plasticwrap or something to keep up humidity.

Good. I thought I had a runt or something. Mine, which was generously gifted to me for free from a biologist friend of mine has barely grown since I recieved it 3 months ago. Its been painted a wonderful red colour because of my grow-lights, and a few small fuzzy shoots have been popping up from the rosette crown in the centre of the plant. I've a few questions, since I've found some fellows who own these wonderfully rare plants; if no one minds. I don't want to question my friend, who's entire basement has been converted into one massive aquarium-like growing lab, but he reccomends growing all of his CP in 75% sand and 25%; I'd recieved my ceph from him in a tiny pot in this exact mixture. All of his plants are doing wonderfully well. He claims there is less room for molds and diseases, which can't grow very well in sand. Should I replant my ceph, or touch it at all, or leave it since its doing well? Secondly, I noticed my ceph's pot had a tiny amount of what appeared to be finely spun wool along the one side: mold, I'm sure of it. I removed it carefully from its jar and changed the water as well as cleaned the pot and ensured it was doing fine. Anyone have any good preventative steps against mold or disease for these plants? I'll let you know that I grow it in a small mason jar, with about 1/8 inch of water at the bottom. The top of the jar has plastic wrap with a few holes in it and its sitting quite close to my lights, and gets roughly 12 to 16 hours of light per day. Thanks in advance.

Xymox, I dont know, I rember doing a trade *couhg cough* lol where I got a small plant, and It died cause i dont think it was ready for the mail, or the change of environment.

To give you my 2 cents I say you should probably wait till you can get a bigger one Unless you are preatty much 100% confident that you can grow them

I'm not convinced the size of the plant is all that important in terms of shipping. From my experience, a small healthy plant (if cared for properly) does MUCH better than a large less healthy plant after shipping. My Cephalotus was quite small when I bought it. It's not small anymore! ;) Though I agree, plantlets are probably a bad idea. Those really aren't just small versions of the parent; they tend to be much more fragile.
