I have seen several postings on the subject of GST's lately, and thought I would post an observation. I am originally from northwestern Indiana, right at the southern tip of Lake Michigan, and GST's are very common there. The reason for the posting is that nobody has mentioned what is probably the most widespread and common host plant in Indiana and southern Michigan, Prickly Ash. Zanthoxylum americanum. Even the rare sightings of GST's here in Minnesota are in areas where Prickly Ash is found. It is a common plant in forest understory areas, and often forms large thickets, like sumac, in pastures and abandoned farm fields. So, if you are interested in finding GST's, look for Prickly Ash.
