BST Crysalis on Crysalis - Here We Go Again

Ok. This has been one heck of a night. I have learned that when posting pictures online and on this site leads the world to see ALL of your photos. That is why NONE of my photo links posted on other posts will work now. I had to make some changes. So all of you posting photos... it leads to your entire album collection online. So, with my discovering this and going frantic over it, I have created a new account to post only photos that I'm willing to share with the world. If any of you need me to explain or think your photo doesn't lead to your album, let me know and I will explain it. I'm usually in bed by now (11:30pm) but have been stressing over the issue and spent a lot of time trying to make those links not work!!!

And this is the crysalis being formed on a crysalis that I am now worried about... do I need to be?

Mine adore and really prefer fennel. I have never had a problem with buying parsley or fennel for the cats. Nuseries shouldnt be spraying them, beacause, presumably they are for human consumption. They only thing I have a problem with is fresh bought milkweed. If I dont spary it down with a bleach solution at first, I often seem to go a sudden onset of melt. I dispise melt. I think the big growers intentionally lace the plants with whatever causes melt. I have a favorite nursery here in Jax that I always go to, because they have the same views I do--caterpillars never truly harm a plant, and butterflies must be preserved. Talk to the people that work there, and if you happen to find host plants loaded with cats, and you dont get strange looks for buying the plants just because " they're infested", then you've found you place to shop from.=D

imabirdnut, There is lots of info in the FAQ section of this forum for raising caterpillars. I purchased several containers of animal crackers from Sams, they are about 1-1/2 gallon in size, for the container, not the animal crackers! After emptying out the container, I cut holes almost the size of each side, leaving about and inch or so all around to attach screen (the cats need ventilation) and to have some sturdiness for the cage. I try to use a single length of screen, but if I don't have enough, I use pieces to cover the holes. I attach the screen with silicone (bathtub caulk) so that it is waterproof when I need to disinfect the cage after the butterflies have emerged. (It is important to disinfect your cages after the butterflies have emerged-especially the monarchs, they are susceptible to viruses and OE spore.) I raise as many as 20 cats in one container, then disinfect when all have left, or at least those that attached themselves to the cage walls. BSTs usually attach themselves to sticks that I place in the cage in pieces of floral styrofoam that will fit inside the opening. I purchased some miniature vases from WalMart, about 3" in height, and use these for supplying food to my cats. The water in the vase helps keep the food fresh and keeps the cats off the floor of the cage and out of their waste. Bummer about the Monarchs:( Maybe they'll return in the coming years when we restore their migration route. They all seemed to cluster in Missouri and OK this year c very little in the Midwest or up the coast. Florida has its own nonmigratory population, as does Hawaii. We'll see what happens next year... In the mean time, congrats on the BST cats and good luck. Hope you see Monarchs next year.

Was your fennel in the yard for a long time? Sometimes if you purchase fennel it will have residue pesticides on it that will kill or harm the cats. The same thing happens if you get something they don't like on the plant or in the soil in your garden. On the other hand, some will for no apparent reason simply leave the plant and boogie. In my experience if they like the plant they will stay on it and eat it until nothing is left and then they will start traveling around. What happens around here is that all sorts of insects get the eggs and the little cats. When they get bigger the cardinals will often get them if I don't put them in a cage.

Just wanted to let you know that BSTs are notorious for forming chrysalides on top of other chrysalides. I've had 3 stacked together before and they all eclosed just fine. MissSherry posted a photo of stacked chrysalides showing the different colors, I think it was last year. I tried to do a search for the picture but didn't find it. Maybe Sherry will see your post and put the picture up again.

Anyway, the longer you raise BSTs, you are probably going to have a duo or trio of chrysalides and it's definitely OK.

On the pictures, you can select whether they are public or private on most sites.

Thanks butterflymom! That makes me feel better. I watched them today and its funny how they act like another crysalis is a "hot potato".

jmcat... hope it works correctly for you. Kodakgallery.com doesn't have that option and the other photos online posted lead directly to people's accounts... I haven't snooped in anyone's photos to know the extent of it because I wouldn't want anyone doing that to mine, but my friend was able to see everything when I asked her to go look at mine for me. Quite scary... not that I have anything to hide, but they're "my memories". (??) She was able to get into my account information.

Hmm, in that case you might want to consider finding a different hosting site. After all, if there's no way to make pictures private, and if people can find all of your pictures from one of your pictures, then they can probably also be found from a google search or the like. I don't know what you'll want to do on that; just a thought. Some other hosting sites are Imageshack, Photobucket, Tinypic, Webshots, etc.
