WANTED: Charlotte plant swap

Is anyone interested in a Charlotte plant swap? I have a few other people who will help host and plan.... now we're looking for a location. If you have any ideas, please let me know! If you'd want to attend, let me know that as well.

Charlotte area plant swap is for sure on for next month.
It is going to be held in Clover, SC.
More details to come shortly....if you are interested..please reply so we can get a good idea of how many people to expect....and have space for plants ect...
We will be having a drawing or two......and some exciting other fun things planned.
In the next couple of days we will have everything planned out and announced....but it will for sure be in September...either the 13th or the 20th and it will for sure be in Clover, SC.

On Mapquest..you can put in McAlpine Creek Greenway Park or McAlpine Greenway park and it will direct you to click on 'get a Charlotte NC map". From that map, find Matthews(south east of charlotte), move your cursor 1/4" to the left and 1/4" to the north and click. Then go to the zoom feature and give it a couple of enlargements. McAlpine is a long greenway park. What you're looking for is the main entrance which is off Monroe Road at the railroad overpass. If you're coming from the north via Independence Blvd/Rt 74 you can get the block over to Monroe Rd via International, Village Lake Drive or Sardis Road North (Crown Point). Int. and VL it will be a left hand turn onto Monroe and stay in the left lane, you'll turn just before the railroad overpass. Sardis Rd North coming from Indep. Blvd/74 get in the right lane and turn right onto Monroe. You'll proceed on Monroe in the right lane, slow as you go under railroad overpass and immediately turn right into the park entrance. Coming via 485 (77 or 85 to 485 which is our partially finished outerbelt) choose the Matthews/Monroe Rd exit #52 and head towards Charlotte on Monroe Rd. If you get off on exit 51 (Hwy 74) be sure to use the exit that leads to Charlotte west or you'll just have to turn around. Then you'll stay in the left lane and take a left about 3-4 miles up onto Sardis Rd. North at a retail development called Crown Point. For mapping, try McAlpine Park Drive Charlotte NC 28211

We can do special trades, but we don't yet have a huge following like the Raleigh swap, so you may not get much response for special trades nor know what types of plants to expect..... I remember a lot of perennials last time. I advertise in other places as well, so if there's not a lot of response here, it doesn't mean anything. :) I hope you can join us!

I've been on Gardenweb for about 10 yes, but sporadically for the past 4 or so years (babies...!) I've been hosting the swaps for about 3 years. i live near Southpark mall, and that's part of the reason I chose the location for the swap. The shelter is great and there is plenty of parking too. The people I've met are so generous! I'm meeting with one person this week to give him some plants. I wouldn't have met him if it weren't for the swaps! I look forward to meeting everyone soon! If you were planning a swap, don't let me discourage you. There can be more than one in Charlotte! I'll come to yours too!

Funny you mention sunchokes. Mine started after tossing the broken pieces out in a damp shady northfacing empty foundation bed. Maybe a year and a half later these 'things' erupted and grew to monstrous size. I didn't know what they were but they were along a raised patio with wrought iron railing so they got tied to the railing and a couple of long (dead) bamboo stakes. Come August they erupted in small sunflower like blooms. By fall, blossoms gone, I decided to pull up the canes and clean up the area. Lo and behold. A bucket full and you know you never get them all out of open soil (uncontained). Four years later, preparing to move, I decided to dig what I could and bring them to the next house. It was fall again and not messing with gardening I made a scrape (famous for 'planting' in scrapes), dumped the chokes with light covering. I really did intend to find a forever spot in the yard for them. Ha I've had them there since, right in the foundation 'border' next to the gutter downspout. Darn things had to be tied up to the downspout and further suspended with hooks to the gutters because they grew taller than the roof (1 story). That first fall after moving I dug and dug up to 6 feet from the plants and gave up after harvesting close to 150 chokes . Only the guys who mow and trim keep them in check but there's still a half dozen canes there by the gutter downspout. Deer love the canes and leaves. They nibble and the canes and leaves grow right back. Wait to harvest yours until mid November after first frost, but make sure that kiddy pool isn't floating with rainwater or the chokes will rot.

I WILL be at the Greer swap on the 20th come HECK or HIGH Water. Looking for a ride with room for me and at least 2 3gal containers on the way back (more would be better), will pay gas, heck will pay for a share of a car rental if that is what it takes, do not want to miss that swap! Please girls any date but the 20th!

The finalized date for the Charlotte area plant swap is going the be September 13th at 3 pm in Clover, SC.

We will have 2 raffles being held with tickets available for purchase....1 for a glorious plant and 1 for a garden decor item.

We will also have a table for swaps of non-plant items like garden decor, books, fertilizer and the like.

We will have all the details nailed down for the swap in the next day or so...and all who sign up and send either of us an email will receive an email explaining how things will work and direction and phone numbers.

So far I have 5 people for sure interested in attending.....and some people working out their schedule.
I haven't posted on all my sites yet.....but, I wanted to let anyone interested know that I am going to be setting up an email contact list of all coming se we can exchange wants and haves with the people who are not on GW so everyone has an opportunity to set up other swaps on that day as well.

It's still on...I sent out an email to everyone who had emailed me about coming to the swap.

If anyone else is interested...please email me ASAP...I am trying to figure out my final head count so I can figure out how many refreshments to buy and so on.
