I picked the first yesterday and two today and more on the way -- Early Girl.

I ate two sungolds...nothing else is even close.

Almost! I see a few cherries starting to turn *yahoo!* Going to be a good harvest this year.

We picked our first sungolds about two weeks ago, our first red pear yesterday, all others are still green. Looks like in a couple more weeks we're going to be eating tomatoes for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

BTW, we're in zone 9.

The SoCalif heat is hurting medium and larger tomato including forming new tomatoes. I just try using Electric Toothbrush.

I've got red and yellow cherries ripe here in Newport Beach.
Big ones still all green. What is Electric Toothbrush????

I live in Mariposa, in the Sierra foothills.

I've had a cluster of Matina on the vine for the last month that are still green. A few more clusters have formed during this time. Also have Sungold and Sweet Million cherries that are on the vine and green, but haven't turned yet.

I'm dying for the color to turn!

What is Electric Toothbrush???? Some people use an electric toothbrush, or shake cages or flowers to increase fruit set. It is my understanding this works if the temperature is too cool, but not if it's too hot. Apparently the pollen clumps/sticks in heat and humidity. Must be a different reason fruit doesn't set when it's cool.

In Sacramento, I've been eating Matt's Wild Cherries for a couple of weeks. I've also had ripe Odoriko and Cougar Reds.

I have lots of green Early Girl tomatoes but the foilage is turning yellow. Can anyone tell me why?

I've had ripe Stupice, slightly bigger than cherry, for a couple of weeks, and one bunch of New Girls is turning. Soon, very soon.
I water my veggies by hand, which gives me a chance to inspect them and to "tickle" the tomato blossoms to improve fruit set, as suggested once by Sunset, I think. I can't really say if it has helped, since I've never set up a control group for comparison, but it makes me feel effective;)

There are usually several "yellow leaf" threads going on the tomato forum, and maybe in the tomato disease forum. Some lower leaf yellowing is apparently normal, but then you have to be able to describe whether there are spots, whether there is wilting. There may also be a link to some kind of tomato disease diagnosis site.

Yesterday, we picked our first basket of cherry tomatoes! Delicious! I had bought plants with the tag stating that they were Rutgers, but soon realized that they were not Rutgers at all (a favorite of ours) but the small cluster-like cherries!

We are still eating!

I picked my first Early Girl late last week. And boy was it yummy. Picked another 4 today and the first Mr. Stripey.
Better Boy, Brandywine and Romas are all still green.

I've eaten a few cherry tomatoes (sugar lump, snow white and Una's Yellow), one Kosovo and quite a few Kimberlys and SFTs. The Kosovo was the best so far.

The Abe Lincloln has been giving me lovely ripe tomatoes for the last couple of weeks as well as my Early Girl. Yesterday I saw one of my Brandywines just getting ready to ripen enough for picking and the Constoluto Genovese has also had several ripe ones that I have picked. Some of the other though are taking a little longer, but I live in a coastal area and I don't recall the tomatoes really ripening alot until after the Fouth of July in the past. So I am enjoying the small harvest now and preparing for more soon!

Had my first BLT of the summer with an Abe Linclin tomato yesterday. YUM!!!

I have been picking Kotlas since early to mid May, followed soon after by Silvery Fir Tree. My grape tomato (Cabernet) and Principe Borghese toms were picked in late June. Just last weekend I picked my first Cherokee Purples and have a few Brandywines beginning to blush. They will probably get picked this week (I hope!)

Just out of curiosity, how many are members of tomatoville.com? Many of the members are from CA.

Not many reds here on the SF peninsula near the bay, but I've had cherry tomatoes for a week or two (a few handfuls of yellow Galinas, a few orange Sun Sugar, and a couple orangey Tonadose des Conores), plus a couple purplish Black Plums. It looks like a few red Riesenstraube may be ready today. The Aunt Ruby's German Greens are green and getting quite large, not soft yet, but I'm checking them every day.

In the South Bay, I've had Sun Golds for a couple weeks, Black Cherries soon after that and in the last few days a couple plum sized yellows (Taxi and "Unknown Yellow Dwarf"). Brown Cherry looks about ready and several medium sized red are getting color.

My first Better Boy is what I would call ripe just today.

Had our first two Early Girls on July 1--from seedlings put out first week in April. I try a few plants early every year but it seems to make very little difference in the end. Soil is heavy and wet with clay and we often have mucho marine layer in April and May. Stupice has lots of green turning red. Brandywine is just beginning to set (also planted April 1--go figure). We don't have warm nights so we are not having the same problems regarding pollination as farther south.

Most of my tomatoes are planted at a community garden site because I don't have six hours of sun at the home garden. The community garden soil has verm. wilt and fus. wilt and every other tomatoe blight you can think of. Even planting less flavorful "resistant" varieties does not give one a gorgeous tomato plant. So the real trick is the weather. Sunny weather means we get tomatoes before the decline of the plants. Marine layer means the blight takes over and there is a much reduced yield, if any, before plants becomes just a stalk with no leaves.

On a postive note, I planted a Juliet, SF Fog, and Marianna's Peace two weeks ago in the home garden at Soltice--and already have green tomatoes on the Juliet. Sun and heat make a big difference in not very sunny Santa Barbara!

marle-gardenaddict, I had one plant that was green and healthy, and another that was turning yellow and not growing much. I put some 16-16-16 on the yellow plant and watered it in real well, and the plant was green and growing within a week. I tilled in some dry leaves and bark this spring, and I think my soil got nitrogen-starved.

Will be picking some Matina today, a plant with many clusters. Started May 1.

I now have tomatos on all of my plants, including a couple of Giant Belgiums. Sun Gold, Sweet Million and Burbank Slicing have many green.

Thank you lilydude, I am watering and will try feeding the 16-16-16 and see what happens next week. The tomoatoes look good, its the leaves that look sick. Previosuly I planted in the ground, but this time I planted in a stryofoam type whiskey barrell. Hoping for the best for everyone.

Interesting - I'm in a much cooler zone than most of you and I've been picking red Early Girl and Yellow Pear for well over a month. Temps have mostly been in the 70s - low 80s, but we did get a few high 80s and even a 90 a week or so ago.

The Stripeys are starting to set. I hope they're good - this is my first try. And the Brandywine are big but still green. No other varieties since it's just two of us and I'm not into canning.

Lots of apricots, too, thanks to my sweet kitties keeping the ground squirrels away. : )
