My 1st Dat bloom ever! Tatula Le Fleur & other blooms

Started opening yesterday. This one is on a small plant. The seed was a surprise in a wandering jew pot. I left it, but I wish I had taken it out and transplanted so it could have gotten bigger than it will in this lil pot.

Still waiting on those hibiscus buds to open..thy keep getting bigger and bigger and bigger, lol. The biggest ones are almost the size of a golfball. Last count yesterday it had 14 buds. Can't wit to see what the flowers look like.

I am thinking the purple and yellow dats will not be singles because the buds are much fatter around (also longer)than the single Le FLeur was..am I correct in thinking this?

Terpguy: I don't know. I can tell you how it's growing though. It is on the top usable shelf of my plant shelf, which is in front of an unobstructed south facing window on the third floor. It is fairly close to the window, maybe about 4-5 inches away. The window is covered with a sheer mesh curtain, the cheap kind you get at Ikea. It is growing in a mix of coco fiber, tree fern fiber, and a bit of bark and lava rock (I think that's what it was). The bottom of the board above is lined with aluminum foil to attempt to reflect light downward. It's in a clear orchid pot with side slats, so when it looks dry, I water it. I try not to let it get totally dry, as I read somewhere that it likes to stay moist. It tends to bloom at least a couple times a year for me. I was surprised that it decided to bloom now, as it has been putting on a lot of new growth and I thought it would concentrate on maturing those. Hey, I won't say no to blooms. So, I don't feel like I do anything special. Paph delenatiis don't bloom for me for anything though. At least one tried last year. This year, they didn't even try. I'm clearly doing something wrong. The one has been steadily shrinking too. I did it, I got Pleuro alata and that Lepanthopsis. And of course, I forgot another bloomer, a Phal hybrid with a name I can't remember right now. It's a harlequin with yellow-green petals and burgundy spots, blooming since Januaryish. I'm keeping my eye on my Cattleya luteola, which has two buds getting steadily bigger and fatter. Exciting! Calvin, I can't really help with any tips on C. luteola. Like I said, I thought it hated me. It's about 5 inches away from an 85W CFL, and it kept growing too close to the light and burning off its leaves. So I'd get new growth, then lose it. Although I guess the pbulbs stuck around. That is what is spiking now, a leafless pbulb.

I am soooo confused. Exactly what is a sport? A sport is a spontaneous genetic mutation that has some quality distinctively different from the original. For example, someone in Chicago spotted a flower on their 'Peace' rose that was dramatically different in color than the original--that person rooted that bit of the plant, named the variant 'Chicago Peace' and it is in commerce today. Another mutation besides flower color would be growth habit--an example of a climbing sport would be 'Climbing Peace', which has the same flowers as the original 'Peace', but which has longer, "climbing" canes.

Thanks guys :) lmao Scott..well..uh..I can send ya some seeds when they are ready..IF I get another bloom on the plant to make seeds. Tho, now that it started blooming it should go till frost. I have another purple dat right next to this one should be bloomin any day, but I dont know if that is a triple or not as well.. Ya know...I may even have a few triple purple seeds left over from when I started this one this spring..I'll have a look see for ya.. O and regarding that other comment..Scott, you're so full of crap, your eyes should be brown..O wait a minute..I THINK THEY ARE!!! LMAO!!! Lady Liz looks great! Your clump of Joan Senior is pretty special; she looks much happier there with you than she ever did here! Sometimes newer plants can have weaker scapes that straighten up (even thicken up) as they settle in...also, sometimes they lean toward the sun... They look this good now, just think...they'll be even better next year!

Yup, it is the same one as mine. That dat grows so fast!
My NBJ has the same little (fuzzy growth).I believe it is buds.Yay!

Kylie..they ate the dats!?! I'm sorry. I guess it didn't kill them. They are big animals though, prob would need to eat a massive amount to have an effect. Want me to try and save you some seeds?
Do you have any dairy cows?

Theresa, did you give the dat fert at all? I havent because I keep remembering what Karma said..and I dont want them to take over the world, lol. But mine are growing so slow, I am tempted.

Daniella, to be honest, I haven't given anything fert. Just compost/mulch, used to be called Philly-Mulch,free from the water treatment facility(purified people poop with wood chips).This year it is called Earthmate Mulch,new process of composting it, now it's safe to use around edible plants. It wasn't before.I put the fine stuff on my beds before planting.That's it! I even used it to make up potting soil mix! Great stuff & free!

daniellalell, that one is considered a weed in our county here. I had 6 plants last year and ended up with 4 huge pickle buckets of seeds. I also dug to China to remove all the roots and this year I have picked close to 3 dozen seedlings out of the Datura bed. She is pretty but can get away from you!! Ours also shot upwards of over 6 feet tall only on Water!!

congratulations Daniella that you got your first dat to bloom. Others will follow. Them producing seedpods is NO problem lol. I pinch off the dead blossoms every morning so I do NOT get any.
I am waiting and hoping too for some doubles. Crossing the fingers for us both.

GG, I only plan on letting the first one or two of each produce seeds..the rest I will pinch off to prevent it. I def dont want them taking over the gardens next year, lol.
