When I read your title, I thought you might be talking about aphids. Carnivorous plants can be affected by aphids, too. I do not know anything about cutworms. If it feeds on the leaf or stem of the plant like an aphid does, then these plants would be affected by them also. I guess you are trying to grow organically without any chemicals? As far as what kind would grow where you are, any fly trap or sarracenia would do very well. You just plant them outside and leave them there year round. Do a search on growing instructions or care tips, either here on this forum or Google to get an idea how to grow them, because it would take pages of writing to give you all the fine points. Then you can come back and ask some more specific questions. People thing that getting some carnivorous plants will solve the bug problem, but it really doesn't. As a matter of fact, they attract more, so you may start noticing more gnats and things than before. Sure they eat them, but they attract them so they can do so.

Cutworms, as you know, feast on plant roots. Carnivorous plants can have problems with cutworms too. So you might create even more problems.

Furthermore, looking at pics of cutworms, I think they are too big for flytraps, and will probably rot the traps. But still get a flytrap because they are awesome. You could feed cutworms to sarracenia, but the leaves might also rot if they get too full. A sarracenia would be your best bet, though.

Hi all, let me try to clear up a few things. I'm not really looking at the carnivorous plants as an control measure, just want to have fun and try some interesting plants.

The cutworms I have are leaf eaters not root eaters but there are different types of cutworms and some may well eat roots. They are the larva of certain moths and grow very fast. I have caught some at the first sign of leaf damage that where less then 1/4 inch long, put them in a jar to study them and fed them leafs from my tomato plants (I cut the leafs with leaf miner damage - not good leafs) and in a few days I had this!

Nasty things! Another thing they seem to really enjoy is finding young seedlings and cutting the plant at the soil line. This kills the plant and to really piss one off they don't eat the top of the plant. They cut it just for spite I guess. The one at the top right is about as big as they get, too big for the fly trap?

I will research the sarracenia.

I would love to try and get away from using pesticides to control the darn things but so far the only thing I have found that works is Sevin.

I try to use as little Sevin as possible so I will find the cutworms from time to time when looking over my plants. I have been smashing them with my fingers - yuck. It sure would be fun to drop them into a carnivorous plant instead.

ohh no CArnivorous plants are ANY thing But exterminators or one or two alone wont even do any dammage... You would need a large feild of Plants, in the 1000's range, even then the Cut worms would have a go at youre Plants, Unless Cutworms are attracted to Sugary Sweetness, or a honey/mellon Scent?

Neem Oil (nautural oil from a Nut) is a great Way to control insects and fungus! STill They are interesting plant to grow, Sarr's and VFT;s are the best to choose from, I would choose a VFT and a S. purpurea (A species of Sarracenia aka Sarr)And Every one should try one or two maybe 40?
