Carnivorous Plants

my long pitcher cobra lookin plant.

ok so that plant...is drying up from the top. and i keep it in water all the time. whats up, why is it doing that? yea.. and pitcher plant fell.... and even before that . the plant wasnt very stable into the dirt. why is that? the roots arent very long and holdable. why is that? well thanks fellow CP lovers.

Aside from the fact that old pitcher do dry up, it is also probable that the plant has been neglected,long before you purchased it. I'm guessing that it's this plant?

Before putting it outside, I repotted and kept the pot suspended / resting on the edge of the Lowes cube and topwatered so that the plant wasn't sitting in water, allowing for good drainage. It's like a Nep in a hanging basket, just watered more frequently.

If yours is displaing new growth, then don't worry about older pitchers.

yeah sounds like your plant was mistreated for a wile.
its possible even that the soil mix is no good.
or maybe its been to warm for a longtime (these guys need to keep their feet cool).

id advise you repot it to live spagnum or a good fluffy peatmix, peerhaps u already have.
then give it lots of sun and pamper it by flushing with fresh water daily.
if the pot is black or brown and u have the sun shining on it itmight help to put some tinfoil over there to keep it from warming up to much.

though chances are the plant, like so many CP's wasmistaken for somethingthat wants shade and deprived of light.
if this is the case the pitchers should not have lot of color.
if it has experianced top much drought it will have red spots and blotches n stuff.
if it has recieved good levels of light it might have a bronzelike coloring, particularly on the 'cheeks' on the side of the top of the pitchers.

there is ofcourse a chance that it was brutaly repotted before you bought it.
they dont like that either.

in any case pamper it with lots of sunlight and fresh water
and hope for the best.
and dont get discouraged if it dies on you, but blaim the seller and get a new plant from a different source...

So what did you do wrong. ItÂs hard to guess what you did. We already replied to one member regarding his neps & as you have read have made a description how he is growing them. We have to ask some more detail so we can resolve his problem. So there are many causes that can cause a nep to stop pitchering. From low light to low humidity. SoÂ How long has it been that it stopped pitchering? WhatÂs the temperature where you keep your nep? Did you move it? What type of water are you using? Have you repotted it? If so, what type of soil are you using? How much & how many hours of light are you giving it? And, is anything else wrong with the plant beside it stopped pitchering? For the most I can say now is that because you live in a country that suffers very cold winter. It could be it got exposed to cold temperatures, neps will stop pitchering if it gets too cold. CanÂt say low humidity has to do with anything since I have my own N. ventricosa pitchering, including my N. x ÂVentrataÂ, N. truncata, N. alata, N. x ÂJudith FinnÂ at humidity low then 10%.

i like the size of youre pitchers, I bet if you water it more, and give it a bit more nutes youre pitchers will last longer... and wont die half in half like that, i like the size i havent gotten any of mine that big yet Only have had one for 6 months. They are happy though! Ive also heard that you can leave the pitchers on, but fill them up with water, just make sure that you cut them off as they die (wich most of them will) But bugs will be caught and used as nutes to help growth. Ive also heard soaking the stalks in a diluted silution of Superthrive will help them to, rooting hormone and the notching. Any objections to those? Who isnt a nep nut? I wish i would win the lotto then i could get HUGE Hot house and things of the sort (my room would be an observatory of Highlands and Lowlands!!!) Cheers

Darlingtonia are a little more difficult than many carnivores. They like cool conditions and cool root run. They are also slow growers. They come from the Northern California coastal mountains where it is cloudy and cool all the time and their roots are in or near moving water. Tough carnivorous plants are Nepenthes Miranda and Ventrata (often available at big box stores). Miranda has quite large, colorful pitchers. Highland and intermediate elevation Nepenthes are generally pretty easy to grow as long as you don't let temps get too low. They are not as picky about water as drosera and sarracenia. I live in San Diego where my water has over 700 TDS and I water them with tap water. They don't seem to care. Sarracenias are also quite tough. Although in much of Arizona they will want shade to part shade due to lack of humidity and the amazing amount of sun and heat. These definitely need reverse osmosis, distilled or rain water if TDS is over 100. Drosera binata are easy but pretty much disappear during winter. They also prefer to have some shade in hot, high light conditions. Drosera capensis is quite tough also. Start with something that will be successful. Avoid Darlingtonia and Heliamphora until everybody is really into the hobby. I can totally recommend the Mike Wang sarracenia at California Carnivores. Big beautiful and healthy.

Hi Calvin, I agree with Corymbosa's recommendations. What I meant by pitching the plant is throwing it in the trash. Often a single plant with mealies can quickly infect the rest of your plants. In Schnell's Book, he recommends the Acephate mentioned above. He says that the mealies often live below the surface as well as above, so remove the plant from the pot and discard old potting mix in the trash. Rinse away all leftover mix and as many of the bugs as you can into a safe area (down the drain or in a street?). Then spray the roots and rhizome, as well as the pitchers with the Acephate. Repot in fresh medium, and respray the plant in 10 days. I would also spray again 2 weeks after that. Apparently, mealies often get to Sarracenia from succulents in your collection, Or they come in from plants extracted from the wild :-( especially savanna plants. Good Luck! Best, Ross
